3:37 - He meant to say 'You needn't use all the numbers'. 5:41 - That could have been a 9. 6:50 - I started using that phrase for the US localisation of this game! 7:49 - The score should be 14:8
There's a very collegiate atmosphere here. It's less like a parlour game, more like the World Chess Championships with that layout. Also I was getting the impression they had their own Petrol Station when they started the Numbers Game (somewhat topical).
Only one way to get 860: 6 + 1 = 7 7 + 25 = 32 75 - 32 = 43 5 × 4 = 20 43 × 20 = 860 Problem is, it took me much longer than 45 seconds to come up with that!
I got the first numbers game with the following method: 75 + 4 = 79 79 x 7 = 553 50 / 5 = 10 553 - 10 = 543 It's ridiculous how that arithmetician actually got the job if she couldn't even get it perfectly. Having seen the full series of calendar countdown, it is so obvious that mathematical ability wasn't listed as an important skill for getting the job during those days before Carol Vorderman
I very quickly had this, 75 x 8 = 600 600 - 50 - 7 = 543 Yet with the extra time while he explained the rules after the selection, and the additional 15 seconds, no one got it 🤷♂😂
The sad thing is I don't think I'd have noticed if you didn't point that out...I think it's funny how Richard several times says 'the numbers' then corrects himself to say 'the letters' and vice versa
i not have heard of calender countdown i heard of calender news on ITV i wonder if calender countdown was first maded on ITV before channel4 was launch in Nov 1982 this must be a early version of countdown before channel4 had a series of it i just seen a early version of countdown i wonder if they changed it when channel4 launch because in 1982 it wont have been called calender count down in nov 1982 i wonder if yorkshire televison maded it first before cannel4 in 1982 from daniel clapham
Yep, Started first on Yorkshire TV as a regional show only (so no one outside Yorkshire TV region received it) then it moved to Channel 4 and went nationwide when that C4 launched, lost the Calendar bit from the name but kept the presenter.
"...goes to the fruit machine and gives it a good tug". Oh Richard, how I've missed your amazing commentary!
This production makes the game harder for me. Even with more time on the clock. lol
Yeah, I can see why they toned it down.
Joyce should have had 3 points for the number game too!!
indeed, its so obvious that they hadn't thought through the whole format
This looks like a 70's hangover.
Countdown cards have always has been magnetic and they still are today!
So primative Ted Moult gawd 😂 god bless Richard ❤ still watch it now Anne Robinson hosting next😮

'Dictionary Corner, did you get that? Gazebo?'
'Nope, got one in the garden though, and it's a nice word innit?'
That guy's a dolt.
Bring back The Vord at the board👍👍👍👍👍
That target number selector is the coolest thing tho
“He’s used 5 twice.”
“No he hasn’t… shut up, shut up.”
4:35 she pressed the buzzer before Richard had started the clock, was that what made the clock start doing the ticking noises?

the reason it was like that is cos Des Chiffres et Des Lettre was exactly like that too
Except that the host picked the letters
@@danwoodhouse9290
Good reference.
She can give my fruit machine a good tug LOL
Rofl bro
That noisy blackboard is horrible
OK, 543. Haven't seen it done this way yet and other commentators seem to have more steps than they need. I did: 8 x 75 = 600, - 50 = 550, - 7 = 543.
The other way I got was 75x7 = 525. On the side you then do 50 divided by 5 to get 10. Add the 10 to 525 as well as the 8 to get 543.
Yep, that was my method, too. Only took me another seven years to work it out...
(75x7)+(50/5)+8.
@countdowngoofs
wow so this show was born the same year as I. Any idea of the day and month?
November
8:22 It keeps going
@formulacountdown and at 6:12 !
Good game😀
Angela's in the way at 2:00 !!!
Was the mathematician really from the *mathematics* department of Bradford Uni? She was rather slow in calculating the sums...
I'm not good at maths, but I worked out 542 in my head, no need for pen and paper or a blackboard and chalk.
@@joannegray5138 the board is more for the viewers at home to follow, than the mathematician needing it.
First number round :
7 * 75 = 525
50 / 5 = 10
525 + 10 + 8 = 543
Second number round :
75 - 25 - 6 - 1 = 43
5 * 4 = 20
43 * 20 = 860
What was ‘Calendar Countdown’ made for, if it wasn’t on TV?
It was a pilot, pilot episodes are rarely seen. There was a series of Calalnder countdown made
She is much slower than Carol!!
what year was this? does anyone know?
1981
the closest I got on the 2nd numbers game was 855:
6+5=11,
75x11=825,
825+25=850,
4+1=5,
850+5=855.
Only one way to get 860:
6 + 1 = 7
7 + 25 = 32
75 - 32 = 43
5 × 4 = 20
43 × 20 = 860
Problem is, it took me much longer than 45 seconds to come up with that!
There is more than one way to get the 43
I got the first numbers game with the following method:
75 + 4 = 79
79 x 7 = 553
50 / 5 = 10
553 - 10 = 543
It's ridiculous how that arithmetician actually got the job if she couldn't even get it perfectly. Having seen the full series of calendar countdown, it is so obvious that mathematical ability wasn't listed as an important skill for getting the job during those days before Carol Vorderman

75 x 8 = 600
600 - 50 - 7 = 543
Yet with the extra time while he explained the rules after the selection, and the additional 15 seconds, no one got it 🤷♂😂
only 8 letter selection in the pilot
I love Countdown. Is this real?
Well it was a bit more polished when it went to series and a lot more polished when it jumped to Channel 4
8*75=600 -50=550-7=543
4:34 BUZZER ERROR!
She got it before the clock started!
(7+4)x50=550
75/5=15
15-8=7
550-7=543
7*75=525
50-(4*8)=18
525+18=543
what was the point of that mathematician girl? she never even showed how to get the right target in the numbers games
+smallie210 That's why it's a pilot.
The models weren't trusted to get the maths right!
7:47 The scores went wrong from that point! Joyce was supposed to have 1 added on there.
The sad thing is I don't think I'd have noticed if you didn't point that out...I think it's funny how Richard several times says 'the numbers' then corrects himself to say 'the letters' and vice versa
I noticed.
75*7=525
50/5=10
525+10=535
535+8=543
Carol is better than those two women for sure.
Alek should’ve won he didn’t get the 7 points from Parvenu
8:04 Score change
0:59, 5:54: TARGET

Awful
It got better! A lot better... 😄
