How To Change Valve Stem Seals on your BBF 429 or 460 and watch me struggle! Ford 385 Series

- Part DEUX.... or rather a "continuation" of the valve stem seal replacement job on the 460 in my 1976 F100 SWB. In this video, I show you some of the struggles, and a couple tricks, as we get it all wrapped up! Sadly... a tool is laid to rest... (good riddance!) but rather show you a home made one that works much better! So follow along and watch me fight this thing to the end! The process is very much the same for almost any other OHV type setup, so check it out even if you don't have a 385 series Ford to work on!

Really enjoyed this video Dan, very helpful, have a great weekend buddy
Thanks Mike! I appreciate that. Hey you too, have a great weekend!! Thanks for watching!
Loved the intro brotha!
Still watching 💪🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼🍻
I try not to use the same music you do... think a might have on a couple other vids. Hey- hard to avoid other brilliant minds, right? Hahaha Thanks brotha! BOOOOOM Baby!
Cool I got the same tool been with me 30yrs!! Man it don't matter tdc or at the bottom as long as you got air those valves ain't going nowhere! And no air then some rope in the spark plug hole and crank the piston up done that in the street in the Bronx 1977!!.. But if I go to all the trouble of changing them I'm putting in premium viton seals cause I don't play this game twice!!😂👍VOTE OLY!!
Man I keep forgetting to do the rope trick one! Been wanting to do that, always heard of that method, but never tried it. I like the Viton ones better myself, but they get them when the heads get rebuilt. I probably have 10 or 12 bags of these umbrella ones form NOT using them in kits, so they are free! This ol '460 is getting tired anyways. Figured this little job will give it just a little more time before it finally bites it. Thanks for watching!!!
Great video. Loved all the horn honking lol. I knew you were going to end up chucking that valve spring compressor, those things are total garbage. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks man! Yeah figure I'd try to edit that in... Always got a laugh when others did that over actually hearing the words. Boy did ever find out the hard way, what that p.o.s. valve spring compressor was all about! Agreed... Garbage! Thanks for watching!!!
a great video some young ones will need to watch this to learn how to do it
Kinda partly why I'm doing these videos. Young minds need to know, and maybe my kids actually get into it, they can refer to them. Wished I had the mind to have followed my dad around with a camera before he passed. A lot of great knowledge left with him, sadly....
Thanks for watching though, i do appreciate it!!
@@OlysGarage u learned a lot from ur dad and it shows
@@autosalvage yessir I did. Was pretty much all but his shadow growing up. So much that I became better friends with HIS friends than making really any of my own. I actually enjoyed hanging around with the old guys. Just so much to learn and stories to hear! Kids today just don't understand!!
@@OlysGarage same here they dont understand one day they will
Nice job Oly, sure didn’t look fun but you got it done brother!!!!!!!👍👍👍🤪
It wasnt... lol Use to do these all the time! Part of the Krylon rebuild process when I was a young lad....skinnier....and could see better.... ugghhh... lol
Thanks for watching Steve!
Very nice!
I have to say that's some pretty fine Mecca necken.
Is that Frankie's older brother that took care of himself 🤔
@@VinoRatRodbuilds haha, well what you don't see is the fair amount of rust in this old girl. I think Frankie was a bit better cared for! Future video I'm sure, as floors are kinda important to have! 🤣
Thanks for watching Vino!!!! 👍👍👍
Awesome video brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the content coming. Hope you have an incredible day. Much love and RESPECT. Looks like so much fun.
Thank you brother Tim!!! Appreciate the support! Hope you are having a great day!!
Yeah I could definitely hear the change in sound on the intake valve.
Awesome! I was worried the camera wasn't gonna pick it up. So glad it did. The feel is obvious too, but can't show that in video! Thanks again Vino!!!! I see you got a couple new ones up i missed over the holidays. I will check them out!
Brotha! That was an awesome video!!!
I think that’s your best one yet!
I loved the creative editing you did there
Plus knowing how much that took… major props Brotha!!
Duuuuuuude yes.. took a little bit... plus a few of those were hard to concentrate as I was laughing my ass off so hard and loosing where i was at and what I was doing! But its all for fun and seeing how far you can go, right??? I just wish that video was shot with my newer camera. I really had to help it out and along... That was done on an ancient Hero+....moronically set to 30 fps. I was learning! LOL
Can you believe how much fun we have doing this?!?!?!
Lol!!! Its always fun until it's a 'must do' or a 'deadline' situation. Then its not so much fun anymore! Sometimes... Thanks for watching Bill!!!! Super appreciate it!
@@OlysGarage Thank you!!
I'm glad someone else also had to fight this tool swearing at it...😀Brent (Halfass Customs) says: " You're entering the world of suck."
He wasn't kidding....(Brent) Needless to say, won't be buying that tool again! Lol
It may work better for smaller engines, but not big blocks!
Thanks for watching!
@@OlysGarage It's just too flimsy. The star shaped thingy fell of at cyl. #1 , the rest kept disintegrating 'til it finally died at cyl. #7. NoI am left with two valves to do. Buy anoher one? Nah...
That car horn is going off a lot brotha ha ha
I think the neighbor was having car troubles or something.... LOL!!!!
That's definitely the hard way to go about it not a lot of guys have mutch luck doing it this way
Its a pain but beats pulling the heads. Its a band aid for sure. Doing this doesn't fix worn guides, but does buy some time. I've done a few this way, just never with that jank twisting tool. I couldn't bring myself to spending $$ on one of those multi-angle handle spring compressor tools. Fairly spendy.
Thanks for watching, Chris! The '69 Fastback is moving along nice. I see a couple vids i somehow missed and now need to catch up on. Thanks for watching!
@@OlysGarage no worries
I got you! I'm still blown away how well that dash fits!
#fullwatch 💪🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼
BOOOOOMMMMM BBAAAAABBBBYYYY!!
i ended up getting better tools for that and made some of my own cause i ended up mad and throwing that small one like you have through the sheet rock a few times and in the end i melted that pos with the torch no more pos melted puddle it was
Either they were geniuses for knowing how to sell junk or assholes for duping the public for thinking that junk would work on anything but a lawnmower.....
I tried getting my money back. The counter guy insisted it was misuse...he wasn't buying my story that it came that way...lol
👍🚒
Thanks for watching!
Great work question, Is that the main reason why spark plugs get wet From engine oil, By changing the valve steam seal?
Great Question!
Bad rings on the piston is another popular cause. Usually if they are wasted, it smokes all the time and far worse under acceleration.
With bad valve guides they are usually smokey on startup but clear off. They are the real culprit, the seals themselves are just a front line defense. Changing the seals out on worn guides is just buying you a little more time. Eventually the valve guides will need to be replaced.
Leaky valve covers can sometimes make a mess of the outside, maybe wick-in through the threads. Haven't seen an actual case if this myself, just heard rumor.
Hopefully that answers your question.
Also, Thanks for watching!
I watched your other video…. Can I use the hose from my compression tester or are you saying that’s a little different?
You could! Provided it connects to your air compressor (some connections 'look' similiar but are not) and also that it has a removable reed valve.(like on a tire stem) If you don't it won't allow air into the cylinder since they are designed to allow the flow the other direction for the compression testing function.
I've used the hose end of an old Snap on one before, so its possible.
Hope this helps and thank you for watching and commenting!
