  • Pizza Hut is set to lay off more than 1,200 delivery drivers in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties in the coming year, ahead of a new state law that boosts the fast-food minimum wage by $4 to $20 per hour.

I take it you own no stock in any business, otherwise you would know you would want your investment to grow and not decrease in value. These people get what they asked for, they wanted more money and knows a company is either going to have to raise prices big time or lay off workers.

      ​@@noahzero9380If I'm a business owner and the gov forced me to pay workers a. higher minimum, then I have to adjust cost to make up that shortcoming, thus pass costs onto the consumer, so yes, raise the wage, enjoy your $50 pizza, or your $20 Big Mac meal. I'm not reducing my income to pay you more. I stll need to pay a mortgage on my lakeside home and private horseback riding lessons for my daughter.

      Funny thing is, fast food is now deemed more valuable than most construction, sewage, and labor work. Despite being mind numbingly easy outside of lunch hours (even then, that is when the most employees are working).

      Regardless, I was just saying making the comparison between California's minimum wage ($16) to the arbitrary fast food, forced minimum wage of $20. So California itself has now put more value on fast food workers than actual infrastructure workers on average.

    Despite what politicians say, you can't force an increase in wages and not expect a business to adjust, usually by layoffs or less hours. Businesses don't have unlimited money resources, even large chains like Pizza Hut.

      Sometimes I think the companies wrote these laws. They cut staff and now have an unlimited number of private "contractors" who don't require higher pay, supervision, health insurance and other benefits. Essentially, these soon to be unemployed Pizza Hut drivers jobs have just been outsourced....not to China but to Grub Hub and Door Dash.

      Rent, high cost of food, gas. Wage increase just cant keep up if everything goes up.

    An order that cost $35 a couple of years ago now costs $65. Somebody has to pay when the state triples the minimum wage; it’s not the companies, as they must maintain a minimum profit margin over their costs, it’s consumers that pay. Politicians do it for votes, and it works, the voters being unable to understand how the laws they pass makes everything cost so much.

      We never needed junk food at every corner. I hope these people can find better jobs and pursue better life-styles. When stores shut down as a result of covid many employees received the opportunity to get trained in a career trade if enough places lay off their team and people express to the unemployment office the need. Let's make our economy and lifestyles better with less junk choices.

    People blaming the businesses should be blaming the legislatures who passed the law. I owned a business for 15 years and sometimes you either cut costs or shut your doors. When minimum wages were raised some time back many fast food places replaced counter workers with kiosks.

      Picked up my pizza yesterday on my way home at papa jons for.11$. Got home and threw it in the oven for 15 mins and enjoyed fresh hot pizza. No tips no outrageous delivery free. Stop being lazy people! 😂

    When I was in highschool, Pizza Hut and fast food business's were considered part time jobs. Mostly college and highschool students were employed. Now people expect these positions to be a high paying job to live on and don't need to further their education.

    I worked for The Hut off and on since the late 80's, when they used to have a call center that would take orders and offer TVs and gifts for suggestive selling, a store with a staff of at least 10 employees with 3-4 making pizzas.
    Now, Call center dissappeared, one person makes, cuts, stocks, answers phones, practically one employee runs the store, 1 manager who manipulates the delivery time by cashing the order in early to satisfy the algorithms! Meanwhile the driver, has to hope the customer doesn't think the delivery charge is a tip! From hand made dough to frozen, the taste just isn't the same anymore.

They can, they just don't want to. There should be grave penalties for these harmful moves that are clearly attempting to bypass the law. News flash, if someone can't afford to pay their employees livable wages, they can't afford to run a business. Just like I can't buy a Porsche if I can't afford one.     I used to be paid 10% commission of all I delivered and got to keep the tip. Average weekend in the 1990's was about 300.00 dollars. More companies should look into commission pay and adjust pricing to compensate.

      It really is a joke having to use your own car to do this type of work nowadays. I'm old enough to remember when places used to have their own delivery vehicles and multiple ones too and yet now they've learned that that's very expensive and they would rather have the employee take on that expense. Heaven forbid compensating them for the use of their private vehicle to help my business all for minimum wage.

(Actual example: box gets smashed by driver, garlic sauce spills and soaks into the entire pizza, Door Dash refunds only half the total pizza value). *If you don't like what a company is doing, don't support it!*

      Won't have to look too hard, somehow other chains and even other pizza huts aren't doing this.
      It might lead to higher prices, for someone working in LA this is a 19% pay increase so that probably translates to less than $1/hr. Pizza hut will lose more than that when customers go elsewhere

    In KC Missouri it just raised Jan 1st to $12.30. There's people here working professional jobs not making 20 bucks - and yes it costs money to live here too, nothing is cheap nowadays.

      @AverageJoe483 tax dollars are going to feed and provide needles to homeless in Cali cause they weren't smart enough and got priced out of the work force. Tell your kids to learn to cut grass or weld for fix stuff if they don't want to be homeless. I'm making 150 an hour from home fixing lawn mowers in Arkansas down the street from Walmart home office. 200 an hour welding. 45 now. Semi retired at 40 after making $2 million cutting grass and landscaping that I started with my dad when I was in 4th grade. Only work half the year. Got 18 cars and trucks. Been offering employees 100 an hour but too hard they cry. So they go do door dash and beg democrats to make door dash pay them more. I haven't advertised in 10 years and can't keep up with work. Going up to 160 an hour now. Probably be at 175 in a year. I'm getting 7 a mile round trip to pick up or deliver. Do the math on that. 30 mph average speed. 30 miles in an hour for 7 an hour is $200+ an hour to be an Uber driver for lawn mowers in my 99 s10 I got for $4k 15 years ago and put 50k miles on it mowing with it. Money to be made for people not lazy. I got few e-commerce sites too on side. If someone still working at mcdonalds or delivering pizza at 40 then they really plucked up along the way

      How much is rent for a spot like this? I know in Palm Springs for some locations to do business it’s 10k a month and it’s not even near down town where all the people are at. How much to pay for utilities? How many employees do they have? How much is insurance? Plus a bunch of other payments. How long does it take to make 1 pizza and how many do they have to make to break even.
      Some businesses will fail and close down while others will survive and raise prices.

    Paying fast food workers $20 an hour is insane. Maybe the top of the managers could should earn that, but these jobs are intended for teens and things like that. Not somebody who's supporting a family. It's not a job you have to have a lot of education for or special training that's why they pay less

      Yes you are right but believe it or not, there are more adults with Family’s (between 25-65) working in these places than there are actual teens. Nowadays teens don’t work these types of jobs because these jobs don’t want teens working for them, they’re lazy. They go to Amazon, retail, or some online job or onlyfans 😂

      People see the brand and think they're rich, they have the money. The franchisee has to pay a fee to the parent company for the franchise and they have to pay all of the expenses, including labor and taxes. There's no big pot of money in the company office. These businesses will go through millions of dollars over years before they see a single dime of profit. Ask people if they will pay a big increase for the cost of the product and they'll say sure. But in reality it never happens. The customers will find a cheaper alternative. The government can mandate a 50 dollar an hour wage if they want. The true minimum wage is always zero. Fast food chains are already looking at robots and other technology to replace workers. You get paid according to the value you bring to an employer. The government increasing the cost does not increase the value the worker brings.

    economics 101: minimum wage makes it illegal to run a business where the productivity of an employee is under the minimum amount
    so if you have an idea for a business where an employee could deliver 15 dollars an hour worth of productivity, you have to hire them for under that to make a profit
    setting a minimum wage de-facto abolishes business models which depend on low productivity/unlucrative goods and service sales

Pizza Hut has been notoriously shitty to its employees. Charging delivery fees that don't go to its drivers.     Our local pizza hut replaced them all with DoorDash drivers. So they still do delivery, but DD now handles it once the order is placed.

    All this means, is somebody higher up just got a big bonus. Same thing happened with the insurance company I worked with let go of a lot of employees and ended up giving extra bonuses to upper management.

      All the pearl-clutching is because a direct transfer of payment to labor is a direct transfer from profit.
      It ends up being a shake-out from the companies that are willing to cut the fat and those that won't.
      A company doesn't necessarily have to raise prices if they get rid of the worthless layers of overpaid management or any other inefficiency in the business model.
      If it puts companies out of business to pay a marginal living wage then I have no sympathy.
      The market will adapt.

    Entry level fast food jobs are not CAREERS. EMT's make less than $20/hr LA County and have to go to school, pass the NREMT exam, are exposed to sick and sometimes dangerous people, and are open to medical malpractice lawsuits if they don't do their job correctly. Ridiculous

      I'm an emt and we get paid like shit since like forever. It's ridiculous. Even emts can't afford a decent living with that wage. So this 20$ hike is nothing for everyone. Food and cost of living will go up no matter what. It's inevitable. All other states will be the same. It's just california is already known to be an expensive state to live in.
