How to make a fuel polisher to clean fuel tank diesel bug
I suffered an engine failure while on a trip resulting in the engine cutting out. I do use Marine 16 a Diesel bug fuel treatment. How ever I had a blocked fuel filter and with no prior warning the engine cut off and I hit a wall. This had been while motor sailing for just over 100 miles. Luckily the engine came back on just enough to take out the momentum of the boat being pushed into the wall and to the shore. If it didn't we would of both ran aground and hit the wall at speed. I needed a new anchor that was the damage. We just made it into the marina and drifted into a berth. We topped up the fuel tank and changed the filters and when returning to my home marina I a made a Simple Fuel Polisher to help clean fuel tank from water and diesel bug.
I didn't know what diesel bug was it's a type of bacteria/microorganism thriving in diesel, especially in bio-diesel blends. This can lead to clogging in injectors, filters, and fuel lines, as was the case for me. To address this, I created a DIY Fuel Polisher to clean my fuel tank. I do use Marine16 which is meant to help. I now clean the fuel tank once a year as part of servicing my engine.
The video after this is servicing my Volvo Penta 2040 diesel engine. If you like the DIY style please let me know I also do my own car repairs. I'm not a mechanic, I actually work for events agencies but the pay really hasn't kept up so therefore without the big budget you need to learn and go your own way. I make video's for fun and for entertainment perhaps you have a better way of doing things. Please let me know in the comments if you do.
I do use Marine 16, a diesel bug/fuel treatment highly recommended by many, including boating magazines, to keep things running smoothly. Stay tuned for more adventures, mishaps, and DIY solutions as I navigate the waters of boat ownership!
I found a straightforward DIY how to make a fuel polisher for diesel but solution online and created my own. It's easy to assemble, took around an hour to make and ongoing maintenance only involves changing filters. The whole setup cost me around £150, and now that it's set up, I just need to replace filters.
It's crucial to understand that this device isn't a professional-grade cleaner. Its purpose is to remove a small amount of dirt and debris from the tank's bottom during routine servicing. It's not designed to tackle major issues or handle heavy contamination. Keep in mind that you might also need to replace gaskets on inspection hatches on the fuel tank.
The full list of parts and breakdown is on my website along with ways to help support the channel. Super thanks is also enabled now so I can receive tips from you.

That's a very cost effective DIY set up, and very useful to watch - thanks. Personally, I'd always wear disposable gloves when handling diesel, plus any spillages are often hard to clean up (the diesel smell lingers). So I'd probably contain it all in a plastic container of sorts.

very informative, you can definitely see the diesel has some water in suspension in the later stages of filtering

Firstly, I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to comment and like the video. It's great to see people's feedback so I can continue to try and make better videos. For later shots, I added some water to the samples to show on the camera a little more, which I then discarded the fuel

Great setup. Thanks for sharing. It's obviously making a difference.

Sure does. It's the second time I had cleaned the tank. I did it last year, I have been burning more diesel and refilling more often as I had used the boat and the heater a lot more. It was scarry stuff having the engine cut out on the way into a harbour! Thank you for taking the time to comment, and extra thank you for liking and subscribing. Let me know what you would like to see.

Clever cleaning setup. You said a "production" boat, what does that mean compared to say any other boat?

A production boat is a mainstream brand like Ford or Jeep. They are mass produced with boats. There are a few Jeanneau is my one. Beneteau is its parent company. You also have Baveria and a few others. They have a reputation of being more of an all-rounder marine hopper. But people travel all over the world with them. Just like people row across the Atlantic.
