"Don't forget to remove the black retaining strip otherwise you can't get the keys out" ... saved me hours of frustration! Thank you! :)

The black keys that were sticking on my JD-800 did not want to slip off. The tiny narrow weights had slipped down when the red glue melted, blocking the removal. I took a tiny flat blade screwdriver to gently ease them up into the black keys, only partially, not completely. The black keys slipped off easily.
Thank you for your excellent restoration video!

Hi, Great to see what is inside before fixing...but not for someone without an experience in repairs...I did repairs of several keyboards, key contact boards, which in many cases are getting dirty causing the key to go "silent". I noticed that a proper cleaning solved a problem many times, however, the replacement of the contact keyboard might be sometimes the only option...well, it might be not! In my JD800, which I bought for 500 Euro, the keyboard was "repaired" by someone skilled in some other arts. He used rivets to connect the rubber contacts to the chassis...terrible. I have ordered a new key contact board and rubber contacts but before I got it I decided to have a go on repairing the devastated original board. The difficult part here is that the tracks on the key contact board are painted with a silver paint on both sides of the board and the contacts cooperating with the rubber contacts are made of a graphit paint.I had two graphite contacts totally damaged and a few tracks to rebuild. At the and what came as a biggest challenge was makking the grossing tracks since regardless of the insulating paint used they were sooner or later short circuiting causing malfunctioning of the keyboard. It took some time but after some insulating and repainting all works now (and cost about 100 Euro). I keep the replacement contact board for another occassion. Anyway, JD800 (and other synths) might be becoming expensive and some people having some skills will surely appreciate your instructing movie. Thanks and good luck!

Sometimes the rubber boot replacements will do the job but then again other keys might start not playing properly. I feel the whole replacement kit is the best option. It cost around $260AU anyway for me. I still feel it is worth it though. They have improved the contact strip and once you replace this, it is all go and the keys play perfectly. Contact Roland in your country and ask them. Its not for the faint hearted though in terms of the install. You need to be pretty experienced. Also getting the new rubber boots to pop in without breaking them is hard! The boots have these little bits protruding that go into the hole and lock them in. I found a way though. You get a wooden toothpick and file the end of it so it is smooth and round. The toothpick needs to be slightly smaller than the hole it is going into. Then with a finger underneath to stop the boot clip from going any further than it should, you use the toothpick gently to lock the boot holder into the hole and in place. I think in the video the guy shows how he did it. After damaging a few boots and getting new ones I found this method actually worked the best.
My VCF slider was also faulty. Basically worn out. All other sliders for me are fine and pass the slider test. Roland do NOT have these replacement sliders anymore either. But the good news is that if you look on eBay you will find people that have them for sale. Most sliders are a 100K slider with NO centre detent. But some do have the centre detents on your synth as you know and these are MUCH HARDER to find. So hopefully your centre detent slider will all be OK.

Excellent video. I have got a perfect JD800 in every way (every slider and switch works perfect) but some keys are not working. I fixed them originally but now more are going. Can you still get the flexible green contact strip and all the rubber boots? I feel one needs to replace both of these rather than just lifting the rubber boots and cleaning under there. That does work but does not last from what I can tell. It is a fantastic instrument and really sounds amazing. Midi IN all works for me as well so no issues there but I would like to get the keybed working. Its actually a very nice keybed to play too.

If all the keys sound, and are just sticky, you probably don't need to replace the green contact strip. It's been a while since I worked on these, but the last time I checked, it was getting harder to get parts from Roland and they were getting expensive, but not impossible. Probably a good idea to change the rubber boots. Sometimes you can get them from other sources, such as syntaur.com.

at about 10mins you take the green strip off, but then it cuts to you putting it back on. what went between?

I have got more information. The green flex strip has been replaced with a new modern one now and they have made a version for the JD800. It does require a new connector board and also a new ribbon cable. Good news is all these things are still available (from Roland Australia anyway) but other locations would have them too. So you get a complete kit now. The flexi strip, all the rubber boot contacts, the new connector board and a new ribbon cable to link it all back to the mothership!

In case you guys want a summary of the key references, so you can remove and reposition them with no headaches, this is here : bit.ly/2K8T5F2
just fixed my keyboard, I did not try to remove the entire red glue but rather scratched and removed the glue that leaked out of the key weights. I also had to gently clean some carbon contacts after removal of the rubber strip. Now my JD800 works as new.

hey, why is this nessecary? some of my keys on the jd800 dont work well.... i dont know why, because i removed glue and the rubber contacts down below seem ok... just when pressing a key, it doesnt sound as loud as it should and the key respones only every second third try.....

If you lose the weights, go down to the hardware store. The weights are 10 grams each. You can buy metal nuts that weigh 4.5 grams each. Glue 2 nuts in place of the lost weights. Another fail area is the flimsy ass ribbon cable thermally connected to the green key contact pcb. The joint lies under a clear plastic piece about 2 inches long, held in by 2 black plastic pin things. I am about to jerry rig a clamp to press the joint tight to the metal. Cutting a popsicle stick to 2 inches long, and cutting a 2 inch strip the width of the popsicle stick outof a large rubber washer. Drill 2 small holes on either side of the black plastic pins, in the metal the green pcb is mounted to.... Fit the rubber strip onto the top of the clear strip and put the 2 inch popsicle stick on top of that. Cover the whole thing with a flat metal bar and bolt the damned thing down, thus squeezing the flimsy ass ribbon cable to the green pcb. This can fix dead keys, velocity issues, etc. Sometimes the simple fix is golden...

Thanks for putting a list of the keys on the piece of paper. It’s very hard to focus on them though. You would be be able to copy it in again, would you? Thanks very much for considering
