I turn 50 years old this year. When the electric guitar hits in the synth intro, the portal opens. I walk through. On the other side, it's, 1988 in my hometown in Northern California. I'm at the mall, in the arcade known as the Gold Mine. I insert one quarter into the game Heavy Barrell, a game I've been playing every week for a couple of months. 45 minutes later, I complete the game for the first and only time on one single quarter. I literally never play it again. My simple memories of the 1980's are simply the best of my life. Synthwave music has been so bittersweet to me. It's tricked me into believing that my whole life is ahead of me, that the dreams of the 80's, which still seem in front of us some 3 plus decades on, are attainable. The portal takes me to a place that's long gone, but somehow still promising. I'm tricked into the optimism of a future that already passed me by. I'm dreaming of a girl that I knew in high school, dated in Jr. high school, that's still the most beautiful girl I'll ever know. To this day, I'm the age I am, she's my age, but in my vision, no matter what the context, her face is still 17. Her legs fit perfectly into jeans that were last in style in 1989. My car was from the 70's, it still seems new to me. Memories, and the things that trigger them, are as powerful as any hallucinogenics. This music seems to have that power over me.

As someone who is 20 years your junior and didn't live through the 80s, I still get what you are saying and remembering. Synthwave creates this weird nostalgia for something you never experienced in people my age.

As much as i am in love with their dark, dystopian take on synthwave, i absolutely LOVE when Gunship goes light hearted / uplifting.

seeing arcades shutting down is heart breaking.
You mean for like 30mins before you ran out of quarters since most games were designed to take them within minutes lol. I loved the arcade era but lets be real, unless you had rich parents or were old enough to have a job to sink your $5/hr wage (at the time of the mid to late 80s) into games you were either there a pretty short time or you were stuck on the sidelines watching other people play.

i was born in 12th march 1990 and what a fantastic time it was with all of the 80s and 90s movies we had along with all the great music and video games. the kids now will not know the how it feels to buy there first album for a sony walkman or DJing vinyl. i catually feel sorry for this generation as there is too much choice and its overwhelming the kids now that they get super depressed and dont know how to feel with there emotions.
