    I think that the best use case for flight simulators is being able to do things and test scenarios that might not end so well in real life. On a cold winter's day, here's to just that! Let's simulate some emergencies and see how they play out in real time.
    Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly?     As usual, great video. I use P3D V4 but have never tried the failure options, will have to do that.
    Also the Track IR seems like a handy add-on for flight sim.

    Nick, kudos for replying to so many comments. Also, kudos to the commenters for the great, constructive critique.
    One thing I would put in the mix is: if you ever have to ditch in a Piper, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get that door open and shove something in it to keep it open beforehand. It's been brought to my attention that in the Pipers, the aircraft hull WILL bend after the mains touch the water, and you'll never get the door open afterwards if it's latched shut. Additionally, the banner towing op I worked for this year told me in the event of an in-flight engine failure while cruising a busy beach, don't land on the beach; land on the water close enough to the beach that you can walk, not swim, to shore. I think that's reasonable when you know the beach is heavily occupied. There'll be tons of people who can help you and call for help. Otherwise, if it's a barren wasteland with nothing but sand, then beach it up, maybe use the wet sand to help slow down faster if the tide is going out. The commenter that mentioned spiraling down may be a good way to alert people below that something bad is happening to you, since you won't be making as much noise without that loud thing in the front working; the people at the bottom end of your glideslope won't be as cognizant of the situation if you flew in a straight line. That notion seems reasonable, so long as you watch your bank angle/airspeed in the turns.
    Hope you're ready for Wednesday Night's snow storm; gonna be a doosey! Think you'll miss the snow after you move to FL? (heh heh heh...)

      I'm just glad real pilots have time for a simulator, more than a game, that fills the gap. Just maybe a simulation would prepare you mentally for when the real thing happens! You should do a video, flying a real route, and in the insert clip, the simulated of the real flight. The viewer get to see the real and simulated in real time added together in the same video. That would just be awesome!

    That looked like a lot of educative and actually useful fun! A good thing to do in winter when the weather isn’t great. Yeah would love to hear or look at some of the gizmos you have for your flight sim, that would be a good video.

    Taking off on a hot Summer day with full fuel and full seats at a very high elevation with high trees at the end of the runway can make for an interesting flight. Happened to me in Big Bear, CA. Ended up finally getting climb after a few minutes of uncertainty, but it wasn't a simulation, just a real life thrill-ride

    Thats why sims are invaluable! You can test things you’d normally never do. Things do happen in flight so its good to stay current with emergency procedures. Next time you’re down will have to grab lunch

      It's an interesting debate between head trackers and VR headsets. VR is great for the home simmer who knows his control setup, but literally impossible for flight schools.

      Personally I'd rather have some Saitek hardware that I can physically look at and touch and just have some nice big screens with track IR. Not to mention I think VR would give me a huge headache after 15 mins.

      Personal experience: *DON'T GET IT*
      I used it for simulating emergencies. However with track IR you keep your eyes fixed forward, moving only your head. When a pilot *from Sövde flying club, in a red "sports" aircraft INTENTIONALLY* forced me into an evasive maneuver 200 feet AGL, I realized I was doing what track IR had taught me, keeping my gaze forward when I should have been looking for my new intended crash site.

      TrackIR is great but the implementation in X-Plane is disgusting!
      Would love to hear comments from others with TiR & X-plane and how the implementation compares to other sims.
      The only comparison i have is Digital Combat Simulator where TiR works just about perfectly out of the box.

      Problem is that you learn the behaviour of fixing your eyes forward, moving only your head. The more stressful a situation gets, the more you rely on learnt behaviour and the more difficult it gets to correct the behaviour in that moment. Go for 3d glasses instead, when you turn your head, your motions are tracked the same way, but your screen follows your head.

    How about simulating loss of control surfaces, like aileron(s), elevator, or both? stevo1kinevo flew a simulator where all he had was the trim wheel for elevator; that was an interesting one.

    5:05 climbing out of 2,500 you should have enough altitude to make the turn back to the airport.

      Depends on the wind and your climb rate, but good point. You should always check. Using a nearest airport feature on a GPS is always a good idea too.

      At least in FL I've seen several aircraft successfully land on the beach and taxi away with zero damages, but I'm sure it varies infinitely by beach type. Hope you're doing well, sir :)

    I had an oil galley plug spring loose behind the prop spinner and totally covered my windshield. So much so, that I had to look out of the side window to land. I made it back to my home airport before the engine quit, oil was virtually empty. Happened earlier this summer.

    Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried to mount your stick and throttle in a position closer to where the real aircraft controls would be in relation to your body? I was doing my training in a Samba XL which has a stick between the knees and when I moved my Warthog to that position I found it made a huge improvement in my flying, both simulated and real, since I could practice making motions with my wrist instead of my whole arm. It even made a difference in my flying with a yoke aircraft (Cherokee 180) since my wrist angle was up instead of down relative to my forearm.

    From a Civil Air Patrol Safety Officer:
    1. THANK YOU for the advice about the impossible turn. I curse the day this was taught because now if gives pilots a delay in reaction and planning as they decide what action to take. Think about it; single engine failures on take off makes you commit to choosing a landing spot, but in twins, now you have a decision to make. Tick, tick...boom.
    2. You have GOT to tell me what software and hardware you're using, and that VR type connection with the hat - MS FS X is what I have, and I think my system may be a bit weak...I get snap shots instead of streaming video. And, I can never get he eye view squared away at straight ahead again after looking out the sides. I have the Pro Flight yoke, pedals and throttle quadrant, but I frankly LUST after that hat thingie, and your set up. HELP ME OBI WAN!

      Sadly, even a liquid nitrogen cooled super computer will never get you fluid visuals with any flight simulator today... they're just too poorly optimized, but FSX is definitely the worst. One quick tip to solve one of your problems for free, though, you can assign a joystick button to recenter your view. That's what I do when I'm not using TrackIR. Hope that helps :)

      Friendly Skies Film the optimum bank angle for a turn back to the field is 45 degrees to minimize energy loss. Give that a try next time, we do this at 200’ AGL in the glider. For powered I think the turn radius dictates something like 800’ AGL, but you must always have the mentality of being “locked and loaded” to instantly start that hard turn the moment you pass 800 (or in our case 200’). We verbally call out on every take off “200’ I can turn back”. I’m surprise powered guys don’t implement this common practice. You should fly with your professor at WPI at the glider club if you’re still in that area. He seemed like a cool dude.

    You should really try X-Plane it smashes P3D out of the park when it comes to VFR due to freeware addons such as ortho4xp that put satellite imagery into the sim which makes it look exactly like real life. The quality of GA aircraft is very good too

      Luckily, an actual fire in flight is pretty rare. Some of the other failures in this video, not so much, I'm afraid. You should have known better than that from the thumbnail, though. That water would be frozen if it was near me right now ;)

      Friendly Skies Film I keep forgetting where you are... I also noticed something... Wrong.. when you had the engine failure, you went to the 3rd person view, and the prop wasn't moving, then you said "There's that stretch or road right there, it's tempting.."
      Then you went back to the cockpit view, and the prop was rotating again...

      Yeah, that's a limitation of the prepar3d instant replay feature. Anytime the engine failure flag was set to true in the replay, it just had the thing stopped. What was really neat, though, is that it won't stop spinning because of the windmill effect when the engine simply stops, but when we ran out of oil, it actually ceased the engine. Neat.

    Shouldn't it be Full Throttle - Then Mixture Idle/Cutoff. To burn off the remaining fuel within the lines and engine? Also your POH should have an Airspeed for engine fire incombustibility so the immmedite action should be pitch for that speed to extinguish the fire. Then pitch for best glide.

      I've heard the full throttle thing in these comments quite a bit, though I've never seen it on a checklist. Seems like a good idea, though. I can't think of anyway it could hurt you. As for a speed, most checklists I've seen say to pitch for Vne to put out the fire. Maybe your checklists are all just newer and next level compared to what I'm used to.

    Interesting.. Regarding the beach landings it's helpful that the stuff the sim doesn't do well in that respect seem to balance each other out. Those beaches are far too narrow, but are not covered in people and umbrellas and structures.
    I'd suspect there is an awful lot of coast south of Jupiter where you'd be better off putting it in the water (maybe in the intracoastal to avoid breaking waves) or limp inland.
    Good luck with your move and hopefully Trump won't shut down the airspace too terribly often once you get down this way. You'll still be a dirty northerner to me, though. Palm Beach County may as well be Georgia as far as I'm concerned. ;)

    Do a vid with power off practice. I would think it will take more than 400-500 ft to do the 180 back to the airport. Most planes are 800-1000ft including the couple of second WTF moments.

      I've been wanting to do that too. I think the performance of the real plane might be a little better for whatever reason. I've watched my instructor do it from 400ft, so it's at least possible, though it might be terrifying as hell.

      Completing the turn without stalling is easily practiced at altitude where minimum altitude loss can be determined safely, practiced repeatedly, and then applied to setting personal minimums for that aircraft.
      Making it back to a runway is a different story. Pitched for Vg, most planes are going to use up a lot of ground to make that turn. Add in that we instinctively turn left even if the wind is actually from the right and we get to multiply (dependent on actual wind) the amount of ground chewed up. Now, once we've completed the turn there is likely still a bunch of distance to cover to get back to the runway -- and we're out of altitude to trade.
      On the other hand, if we minimize turning radius (aggressive bank angle, remain fast enough to avoid an accelerated stall but no faster, and MAKE SURE to turn INTO the wind) then we can make the turn back without covering excess ground, pitch for Vg, and get lined up. Counting on being able to do all that when we haven't practiced it and aren't expecting it would seem unwise.
      If it's performed fairly regularly and every takeoff is briefed as "when the engine quits above X00ft, I will..." then there's a good chance it will work out as practiced. Really I think that's the key. For myself, I know I haven't spent enough time practicing engine-out scenarios in my plane nor do I do a lot of high bank angle practice (working on instrument rating), so I have my turn-back minimum set at 1000' AGL. Anything below that and I'm giving myself 'anything I can see in my periphery while looking straight ahead' as options. Fortunately most of the fields I fly out of have undeveloped property on or near runway heading, but not all. Statistically tree top landings can be very survivable, if you approach them as a normal landing.

      Vx is the best angle of climb, so you expend more of the engine's power climbing vs. flying forward. Just pitch for the Vx airspeed for your airplane while at maximum rated power. In a PA-28 it's down around 60kts. Hope that helps :)

    Given the overall high level of technical knowledge you typically display, I am amazed at your surprise at the engine seizing up when you lost oil. "Why is he looking at a checklist? That engine will probably quit before he touches down!" Was my immediate thought. I'm certain the low oil pressure/high oil temp scenario was covered in your training. Pretty much a classic. The oil on the window is a better sign of that about to happen than we might usually get.

      I have been using p3d for a couple of years and I've also just installed X-Plane 11. Configuring the whole thing is a lot easier, and I think the flight Dynamics are absolutely amazing in xp11.
      I'm not a Fun Boy of one or the other I will continue to use both, but I will say this for VFR flights X-Plane 11 at the moment seems to be the way forward

      I'm sure it is :) VR works great for home simmers who know their control layout, and can have all their supporting material in-game, but for flight schools, it's a nightmare.

      Vincent Carbonara VR gives you a sense of presence and immersion. VR basically puts you inside the cockpit of the simulator, you look around and you are see the inside and exterior of the aircraft (no lag or smearing of the displays). It is also 3 dimensional, so you have a sense of depth and are aware of distance, depth and scale, which is essential in VR. The fact that people experience a fear of heights in VR show how realistic it is.

One of my friends and I are contemplating buying a Caravan pretty much exclusively for charity-type ops. Fun Fact, my old hangar neighbor at Worcester was a vet, and she would fly cats between her practices in an M20.

    I’m not really in favor of the impossible turn either, but I will say that you’re not doing it justice. If you were really going to do it, it’s not like a normal turn at all. The trick is to get the plane turned around as quickly as possible so that all altitude can be spent in the right direction. To perform the 180 as quickly as possible, a 80-85 degree turn is usually necessary. Or land strait ahead, but if there’s nothing but trees in front of you, don’t think it’s a DPE steep turn.

      Surad Mister went to a seminar at Airventure and a guy tested that out. Found that 50-60 degrees was a good margin between safety and getting turned around. Seems counterintuitive but i see the reasonings to turn that steep. He said “turn 50 degrees and pull to the buffet.”

      80-85 is too much for someone not used to acro, your nose will be in the ground before you know it, especially if you've not wrapped your head around top rudder. 50-60 is what I'd expect would work best too, when gliding we maximize climb at that region of bank when thermalling.

I found a NASA paper ages ago that proved practically what they found mathematically, that 45 degrees will always be the optimum for any airplane. I should find it again, but I think I agree that too much bank angle is just a law of diminishing returns problem.

    That flight simulator is not really that real because most of the time on real engine failures in small prop planes the engine turns off and you lose a lot altitude.

      Most of the time in a piston engine you get a gradual loss of power and associated roughness that may or may not result in complete engine failure. In the cases where it does die suddenly (without warning) it is most often due to avoidable fuel starvation, though there are the rare exceptions like throwing a rod. It's also pretty complicated to say what is going to happen as a result. For instance, if you have a 3-axis autopilot engaged then it will hold altitude for as long as possible, so what you'll lose first is airspeed and then altitude once you run out of airspeed to trade. Let's say you lose one of four cylinders: the engine will run like crap but you may be able to maintain altitude -- with an autopilot engaged you'll see a reduction in airspeed and feel that the engine is rough, but everything else may remain normal. Or you lose one of two magnetos, the engine runs rough but you may not notice, and you'll lose some performance but whether you realize that may depend on workload. In the case of an oil leak you're going to lose oil pressure long before the engine seizes -- if you're paying attention it may be possible to be safely on the ground before that happens.

    Not being argumentative, just curious of diffetent views. My instructor taught me to pitch down and do a left spiral at a 45 degree bank. This moves the flames and smoke away from the left side of the cockpit and the increased airspeed may put out the fire. Also to shut off the fuel valve and MAXIMUM throttle to use up any fuel in the lines. Getting the fire out is first priority to landing. How were you taught?

      Sounds totally reasonable. I've heard several debates on the spiral. I just did what it says in the checklist. I would be interested to see if your theory actually gets the smoke away from the window, which would obviously be a good thing. The argument I usually hear against the spiral emergency descent is that now you're also maintaining a steep bank while the world is spinning around you and the ground it coming up, and you can't see, AND you're still on fire. Jury's out for me, but that's why I make these videos. I learn so much from the comment section.

      Friendly Skies Film So my POH says nothing about a spiral descent. It does say to close the heating the fuel selector set the throttle to full power switch off the Magneto's and ignition switch off electrical fuel pumps choose a landing area and perform emergency landing as usual
