9:43 Which Sonos Devices Would I Buy?
10:11 Conclusion
For the past 2 years, I’ve owned Sonos related products, and over that 2 year span, my sonos collection has been growing and growing. Throughout the house I have Sonos 1s, a sonos roam, a beam, beam gen 2, arc, sub, sub mini, and even the IKEA branded symfonisk bookshelf speakers. Let’s first talk about how Sonos speakers look in general. Most sonos devices come in black or white, and aim for a more minimalistic aesthetic that blends in with more modern furniture and homes. These speakers don’t stand out as much as some more traditional looking speakers that might look a little strange in some living spaces. But overall in terms of appearance and build they are good.
Pricing for these speakers vary significantly, with the lowest end one costing $120 and their highest end speaker, which technically is a soundbar, the arc, is $900. So what about Sound? They sound pretty good. I enjoy using a pair of sonos ones for listening to music. I like the full theater setup I have and they make playing video games and watching movies sound really good. The Sonos app also has this function on iOS devices you can use called “Trueplay” which tweaks the sound of the speakers to the acoustics of the room. That being said, if you’re buying these solely for sound quality, they’re for sure not the best value for money you can get and you are definitely paying a premium for all the extra features and convenience you get with them.
What Sonos does great though, is how easy it is to use their app to control and configure their speakers at will. The app itself is pretty nice, enabling you to control the different sonos devices in your home, what they’re playing, their volume and which devices audio is coming from. You can play audio from one room, or select multiple rooms and the Sonos speakers will begin playing music in all of those rooms at once in sync, and you can even control the volume on each room individually while they’re paired. The app even enables you to create custom EQs but it’s very bare bones, so don’t expect a robust interface that lets you control the tiniest of details.
But the most appealing aspect about Sonos, at least to me, is their modularity. You can take different sonos speakers, pair them together to make something even better. Or separate them and use them individually. You can make your setup as simple or as complex as you want, it’s a scalable solution. Being able to use wireless speakers alone or together adds a layer of flexibility that just makes sense. You might have a fully loaded Sonos home theater setup in your house, and then one day move to a place that doesn’t have a nice space for your setup, and so you can part out each piece into different rooms for a new purpose. All these pairings and combinations are all handled in their app. Plug in or turn on your sonos speaker, press or hold a specific button, and then pop open the SONOS App, the speaker will appear, then you can set up your speaker individually or pair your speakers together however you like.
Sonos speakers can’t be used in groups with non-sonos speakers, only Sonos. The only way to connect other speakers to Sonos’ is through wifi and casting audio from music apps, airplay, the sonos app, or through the soundbars that are connected to your TV through HDMI arc. They also can’t be connected to with bluetooth. You can do all of those things, but you pay a massive Sonos tax for access to these basic features. That’s one of my biggest complaints about Sonos.
Sonos stopped providing features to their older devices that worked under the S1 app, and only continued adding features and updates to S2 devices. S1 devices to this day, still work like how they always worked, but do not work within the same ecosystem as the S2 devices. So they can’t really communicate with each other.

I love mine. I think I’m up to three 5’s six 1’s a sound bar and two subs and a Sonia move, I love them. I’m also a tech addict degenerate with more money than I need. But seriously , waking up with a playlist slowly fading in throughout the house while my lights turn on at 50% and my coffee pot starts grinding is a vibe. It helps me forget oboist the hole in my hear that God left when he died, the same hole that I fill with Sonos products.
This is kind of wholesome. But I’m worried about you Bill.
@@JimmyTriesWorld kind of wholesome is a vibe. Thank you 🫡
Good to hear I’m not the only one. I have an Arc, 2 Gen 3 subs, 2 era 300s, 2 era 100s, 2 roams and a move. I should stop now 😂
Your in depth long term reviews are awesome! Thank you
Love my full Sonos setup. I've only had one speaker fail and it got replaced under warranty.
Are there any similar alternatives? I think Sonos might be the right fit because I can have a sound bar for TV/music on the first level and second speaker on the upper level.
Just renovated my basement and went with their in-ceiling speakers, which are hard-wired into their Sonos Amp. Really happy with them so far
What's better value for sound quality?
Great Long term review 👍! I have two Sonos play 1 and two Sonos one for listening to music the hole day. They are very good and small. For movies I have an AV-Receiver with floorstanding speakers as a 5.1 setup. Sure I could buy a Sonos Amp, but then I have to pay 700 € and lose my Center-channel and get also no dts support. So I understand your part which you explain the problems with Sonos products.
I just took the plunge on Black Friday sales and picked up a Beam Gen 2 and Sub Mini, plus have 4 x Symfonisk waiting for me to install when I get home next week.
So far so good, though want to reserve final judgement until I have set up the symfonisk surrounds and truly tinkered (also have new chairs coming so need to factor that in too_.
I will say so far that the biggest disappointment is the lack of a more advanced EQ setting. My wife has misophonia and a more detailed EQ setting would allow me to dial out as much of the pops and clicks as I can for the videos we watch. We watch a lot of CZcams on TV together and need to dial the max volume all the way down to 35% to cut the appreciable difference between the video and ads (SO LOUD!!).
Another feature that would be handy (to pair with a more advanced EQ) is custom EQ profiles so that I can switch between them for different outputs (music, CZcams/dialogue, movies, etc...)
They are minor quibbles at the moment, interested to see how the surrounds go when I install them
@jimmy what would you say is a better alternative and better value?
A lot has changed since you’ve posted this video 😂. Bluetooth, line in, and true play are now much more accessible with the new ERA products. We need an update!
Nice vid, would be a cooler system if it wasn’t such a closed eco system but that’s how money goes
Sonos works best with AirPlay. Just for the simple fact that you can use Sonos with a combo of other rooms with Bose systems and HomePods and you’re not locked into just the Sonos ecosystem.
A great and timely video - thank-you.
I was just in the store today and ready to buy a full Sonos system. Ah Sonos, I’m sick of the walled garden approach companies take. I just want seem-less integration with my Siri HomeKit smart home.
Sonos seems to be a bit too clunky with Siri at the moment.
Was having some connection issues when I first got my Sonos setup even with a WIFI 6 router. Bought the Boost, no issues ever since. I wish they would let you expand on the home theater setup. It seems like a software limitation.
I had a similar issue when I added the Arc system for my maint TV room to my already existing two Beams, two Gen 3 subs, and 4 Symfonisk bookshelf rear surrounds in my Office and master bedroom. Connecting the Arc with a wire to the router created a separate Sonos Wi-Fi network and all Sonos devices joined (works exactly the same way as the Sonos Boost). I don't have network slow downs, slow webpage refresh, or Sonos audio issues since plugging in the Arc.
WiSa certified speakers. You can mix and match any of them and enjoy true wireless dolby atmos
The whole walled garden thing isn't for me. Audio tech stays good so the idea of needing an app not something that will eventually lose support is a big no. My current speakers are from the late 90s and sound fantastic through a new Amp and receiver
Anyone knows a portable speaker that supports airplay? I’m only considering Sonos for this feature.
I have had so many problems with sonos. I have three rooms with the built in surround sound.. outside I have sound bars on two tv’s, a move, and two other speakers that are paired in my living room. Every bedroom and master bath and garage has built in ceiling speakers. I think Im having more of a wifi problem. So I bought the eero mesh and still connectivity drops all the time. The music comes on and off. I don’t know it’s just a headache and playing all speakers at once forget it. I hope I can figure it out.
Have Sonos reboot every thing and change your network channel. I ve got 18 pieces in my house and that worked for me
I started using Sonos products years ago. At the time it was a bargain compared to whole house products from Crestron. My Sonos journey started with one Play 1 and over the years I've added enough speakers to cover the interior and outside of my home. It wasn't cheap but I'm a recovering audiophile and spent more on my two channel speakers than all the Sonos combined. Let me add I'm not rich. I started buying stuff in high school. I actually had a Velodyne ULD 15 on layaway at a hi fi shop who allowed me to pay it off over 10 months. I typically keep products a long time. I'm happy with Sonos. They are not perfect but its a product that has been used everyday in my home since the first speaker was brought home.
Google home speakers seem cheaper and more versatile. Seems sonos looks way more expensive without that much better performance. Although finding the Google home max speaker in 2023 is proving to be difficult. Managed to find 1 so far. With nvidia shield or even a cheap chromecast hooked up to my avr can make my home theater part of my Google home speaker group.
Do you think an upgrade from the beam 1st gen to the 2nd gen + sub mini would be worth it? Specifically for a living room? Additionally, would you prefer surrounds over a sub mini?
Really depends on your mix and type of streaming movies, music, and cable/DirectTV. I've notice regular cable TV can be in stereo instead of 5.1 format with my Beam Gen 1, Sub Gen 3 sub, & two One SLs. Sometimes my One SLs rears are just there for decoration depending on the TV show. Streaming movies/TV series seem to lean more toward 5.1 format and I get more use from my rear One SL surrounds. What I like about the Sub is it works for all audio sources from stereo to 5.1. It takes some of the bass duties from my Beam. My Beam sound better with much clearer mid range and voice along with way more bass when needed.
I have 3 Play:1s throughout my apartment. I only use 2 of them, and always separately in 2 different rooms. If I paired all 3 together I'd probably disrupt my neighbors :)
Thanks - interesting points.
I've just bought a new Samsung TV to replace an older one, with which I used a budget Samsung soundbar + integrated sub. I've been wondering about changing the soundbar as well - the old one is 8 years old and only has ARC input, whereas the new TV has an eARC output and I feel that it ought to produce better sound with a better soundbar. Of course Sonos is high on the list of non-Samsung possibilities, so the Beam Gen 2 is something I've definitely been thinking. Still not sure about the lack of a sub, but interested in using a Sonos One (which I have) as a rear speaker. I haven't been able to do that already as the Samsung system won't play with anything non-Samsung, as far as I can see.
I have playbar, sub , sub mini 6 one sl , 2 play 3 s 2 play 1 s 2 symfonisk. A move and a move2.Its very convenient sounds good. It would be impossible to do this with a traditional stereo system. But my stereo from the 70 s were way cooler and more powerful. Plus i ve got a lot of money invested and i ve lost speakers cant connect and the chat help is lousy. So mixed review.

Yes
Saw a youtuber hack an ikea sonos speaker with an audio jack to integrate and speaker into the sonos ecosystem.
Lunch is coming soon
The worry with Sonos devices is what happens to your perfectly good speakers when they give up on supporting 'legacy' devices down the line. The S1 app was a compromise to appease their users as I understand it, but supporting it or even the S2 app forever can't be feasible. Is there some way to keep such devices functional indefinitely without badly compromising security?
EDIT: I have used Sonos devices fairly extensively and found the native app slow and annoying but the overall system very pleasant to use.
It seems Sonos is following the same device replacement schedule cell phones, laptops, XBox/Playstations, TV, DVD players, etc... follow. It would be nice to use my iPhone 3GS forever; but, I had to upgrade to the 6S+ and now the 13 Pro Max.
I agree. Paying a premium price for a speaker from a company which wireless connectivity is the main feature, it is disappointing to have connectivity and latent issues common among most users.
Sonos are great quality with great sound. So many other “higher-end” brands are jumping on the multi-speaker idea as well. Buying traditional components to achieve good sound can be very pricey as well..especially if the goal is music around your home.
I like the Chromecast Audio better
@@Bizarny I bought it today
They sound as good as the movies
I want to add more devices but I always wanted to know what’s the minimum internet speed needed.
Sonos only needs internet speed when it downloads updates. It uses your internal wi-fi speed to communicate to other Sonos devices. If you hard-wire one of the Sonos devices into you Wi-Fi and Sonos will set up a seperate Wi-Fi network for each device.
I don’t want to buy 25 speakers for every room
Are u guys insane?
I have two Sonos Roams I can move from room-to-room and it has bluetooth for on the go.
Exactly. You can accomplish essentially the exact same thing with other products for FAR less than what Sonos is asking - and you can do it without being locked into one product line from one company. Not worth the money.
@@michaelbeckerman7532 Some people like Sonos products and the added flexibility of having interchangeable parts to mix/match depending on your needs and budget. I dumped my Nakamichi 7.2.4 because it was only able to do one thing compared to the Arc system I could customize to meet my needs better.
Sonos products are nice, no question about it, but unfortunately, once you make the mistake of getting into that "walled garden" of Sonos products, you end up quickly finding out that you're effectively a prisoner there. Face it, Sonos wants your money - and they want as much of it as they can possibly get out of you. They design their products in a way that makes that incredibly obvious, right from the very start too. There are much easier ways to accomplish everything that Sonos brings to the table - and they can all be done at a mere fraction of the cost. As with so many other things in life, it really does pay to do your homework before buying.
So what do you suggest?
@@yannickliekens9303Asking the real questions. I notice OP hasn't answered.
@@yannickliekens9303wow no response interesting lol
Don't buy sonos. I am struggling from day one, and I had a hope to adjust everything right, but no luck. Sound control only from the app, which is very inconvenient. Also, even with modern eero mesh wifi, eras 100 sometimes have a glitchy sound connected to Beam gen 2. I paid $720+600 CAD or so, and I believe that for this money, it should work better. I am thinking of returning it back to Costco as Sonos tech support has no clue how to fix it... diagnostics #...over and over.
I tried everything. Wire is a king in audio.
Sonos is the best. I’m in and never going back
I had almost decided to go with sonos until i heard about them make older products obsolete by not working with newer products and software. Im not investing over $1.000 in products that might become useless at some point because sonos wants to make more money making them outdated..
Their full size sub while not cheap, is their most incredible product. It sounds great and it is not boomy like many other subs. Pair it with any other product and I think you have not the best audio you can buy, but the best audio at the price! The move from S1 to S2 was a bit of a debacle but it was needed. For the first 15+ years they supported every device they ever made! In the tech world that is a lifetime! New streaming and audio technologies could not run on 15 year old chips. Apple changes their charging cables every 5 years it seems or changes USB tech and cuts off everything before it at the knees. The walled garden for sonos in my opinion has been well maintained. YES I do think the price to bring in a port or Play 5 for line in is way too much. And the wifi unstable issues talked about, while rare are enough to make you insane when they happen. BUT there is also another reason for the garden... support! Sonos for the most part has very good, US based support. All the other rubbish on Amazon that is cheap, does not. So let's suppose the wall was taken down and you try to integrate an outside product and there is an issue. Are going to call india and sit on hold for 3 hours or call Sonos because they pick up and have well trained support? Sonos does not want to become support for everyone elses poorly made products. It is a a trade off but ultimately I think they made the right move. For me the biggest downer is no more native Android to sonos support (they used to years ago) as of now only airplay 2 works and with the new ERA speakers Bluetooth is supported but not ideal.
I’ll struggle to go elsewhere based on the user experience alone, same music streaming everywhere is unmatched
Bro got achons Nahida and raiden shogan
Sonos Cope is their best selling product lol
They actually got rid of the points
Wdym?
Once you had your first sonos, there's no coming back

Pretty sure that was done on purpose to showcase the audio delay of the speaker.
