    This has been by far the best explanation of a "HowTo" process for this engine.Infiniti G35 DE!! Im going through this exact job on my own vehicle, and have had reservations about how to set the timing properly. Not anymore!!!!!! My mind is now set at ease. Wrong! He never even mentions all the O rings that go with this system and they must be replaced behind the second cover assembly. This video is literally only a fraction of the complete job each of these engines will require. Guaranteed facts!

    • @natepressley3379
      @natepressley3379 Před 6 měsíci

      Without these O rings you will still have lower oil pressure internally. I've built many of these engines. Every single time the rest of these steps was missed, the engines suffer catastrophic failures. Every single time!!

    Very very good explanation. I do a ton of these at my shop per referrals from one VQ enthusiast to another in the DFW area.
    Couple of tips I’d add for some of the less experienced DIY’ers: a pair of chain vice grips can be used to hold the cam gears (phasers/actuators) instead of pulling the VCs to get a wrench on the cams to keep them still.
    Spray PB blaster or WD-40 on the dowels before removing the timing cover. They’re usually full of crap/oil/rust and the penetrant will break they junk up and make getting the cover off much easier. Also I like to give them a few light taps with a punch/hammer to break the junk up a little bit.
    Run a few of your front facing timing cover bolts in before you start the bottom cover bolts that go in from the oil pan entrance. You want that pan nice and flush before you start those bolts or the bolt holes won’t be properly lined up and you’ll cross thread them. You don’t want to cross thread those bolts!
    10/10 on the video. Couldn’t have explained it any better myself and like I said, probably done this job 25 times in the last 12 months 😪

      Sincerely appreciate it brother! I’ve done like two dozen of these jobs ever, which I consider to be “a lot” haha, but I’m a big VQ guy (obviously if you’ve seen the channel) and so many people struggle with these for some reason.
      That’s fantastic advice for the DIY-er as well!

    I have a 2013 Nissan Xterra with a VQ40DE. Same family of Nissan motors. All this applies to that motor also. Currently, there are dozens and dozens of CZcams videos that explain the specific procedures for finding TDC and aligning everything. DO NOT depend on just this one video. They all have great info from a different perspective. I had to watch most of them because I upgraded my timing chain guides to the ones found in the 2019 Nissan Skyline VQ37HR twin-turbo models with a bit of mmodifications. Jim Wold Technology in Escondido, CA gave me that tip. They are the Nissan VQ wizards. They recently built a few VQ race motors for a Baja 1000 customer in Mexico.

    Great video dude! Thank you for explaining and I subbed up for more! Although I have a question. I'm going to try my best to make this as simple as possible. I need to remove the passenger intake gear out the way to get to a messed up gallery gasket screw head (I rushed to fast, I've done a few of these jobs this the first screw I fucked up actually.) So i wanna just scoot or remove the cam gear. Now the only problem is I made all my white marks on the main chain and all 5 gears just in case. I never set anything to TDC because I wanted to keep my hands away from touching or spinning anything, well that went down the drain. I popped the valve covers off, I wanna hold the intake cam so I can remove the gear. Would you advise entirely against this? Should I hold the cam with a very good gripping channel lock? Or would you use a wrench for that large nut like peice on the front side of the cam? Or should I put everything back and spin it all to TDC and then proceed?

    • @Pete_Tech_
      @Pete_Tech_  Před 5 dny +1

  • @jon-michaelsima3272
    @jon-michaelsima3272 Před měsícem

    Assuming the secondary chains and cams were not removed, but the primary chain was, can you independently rotate cam bank 1, cam bank 2 and the crankshaft in various positions (clockwise or counterclockwise) before finally rotating them back to the marks before ultimately reinstalling the primary chain on the sprockets?

    • @jon-michaelsima3272
      @jon-michaelsima3272 Před měsícem

      I ask because I don't recall whether I rotated both banks clockwise or counterclockwise before rubbing off my paint marks and ultimately starting from scratch. I'm assuming if the intake cam marks are on the timing cover indents, my exhaust cams are in time as well since they rotate together. But, can I be 180 degrees off my crank mark?

    • @Pete_Tech_
      @Pete_Tech_  Před 19 dny +1

      Yes you can. You shouldn’t be doing 180s with it.. the cams are a 1:1 ratio obviously so you just have to watch out for piston to valve contact.

    • @Pete_Tech_
      @Pete_Tech_  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Typically spinning backwards won’t cause it to jump time assuming the tensioner is healthy and the chain isn’t stretched. Now if it was definitely off by a tooth, it’s possible your chain was severely stretched. The new OEM chains have timing mark colored links, they need to be set appropriately. That’s in the video 👍🏻

    • @Pete_Tech_

      Some people are convinced they have to turn the engine over multiple times to check the timing. Turning it over one will not put the cams in TDC, as they spin 1/2 revolution for every crankshaft revolution. So you can put in back in tdc to check marks OR count teeth. Personally, I never do.

    • @Pete_Tech_

      The oil pump requires the removal of everything in the video, in addition to the upper oil pan. Then it is pretty easy to remove.

    Its confusing how you make the top of the chain tight without having slack I do it and i keep rotating them and theres always slack i cant get it to be tight without it being off time

      No.. bank to bank camshaft timing will move, yes, but the camshaft to camshaft chain cannot jump. In this video I specially address the fact that if the cam timing changes bank to bank, it can easily be reset.

      Well it doesn’t have timing MARKS on the BACK COVER neither it has any marks do you could align with VVT circles ,,,so you pretty much have to GUESS like 10am and 2pm also to be safe gotta remove cylinder 1 spark plug to be sure it’s all the way up so yes it’s definitely confusing especially if doing it first time as I am right now today 2/21/24 lol
      Another problem is NOWHERE TO FIND PARTS even dealer has to order and when I go to Nissan dealer they don’t know what’s Infiniti then I have to explain 2020 Infiniti QX60 is same as 2019 Pathfinder with VQ35DD engine ,,, but they still stare like deer into light

    Without removing the entire cover assembly and replacing the o-rings on the back side of the cover and the front cam bearing covers you're literally wasting your damn time even doing this much work. Not hating on your abilities, yet def hating on the half ass incomplete education of what really needs to be done to ensure proper oiling of this engine design. Good luck...

    • @Pete_Tech_
      @Pete_Tech_  Před 6 měsíci

      In my experience, (which may actually be far less than yours), I have not only never seen a failure with those, I’ve never even heard of it being a failure point. There is far more you can do to this engine in terms of replacement/ reseal. If it doesn’t fail, seems that is more of a waste of time.

    Another misleading video that’s gonna cause y’all to take the car to the STEALERSHIP, he didnt show you how to properly make sure the engine is a tdc on the COMPRESSION STROKE! before removing anything. These people love to make short videos with the job half done skipping extremely crucial steps, also he’s doing this on a motors that you haven’t seen start after the job. Get a repair manual guys

      @@Pete_Tech_ Sure Pete, you didn’t verify the exhaust timing marks or intake timing marks with the respective colored links on both chains before removing, didn’t address the fact that the camshafts are spring loaded and will move when the secondary tensioners are relieved, also note guys there is no moving the crank or cams separately in timing, it’s an interference motor. The timing marks need to perfectly match before removal, then obviously before installation. You see just a little after 18:00 he shows you the colored links in the correct position with the mating marks matched? He didn’t do that before removing any of the timing parts in the beginning of the video. That’s were everyone watching this will mess the motor up. He should have did verified like he showed in 18:00 that the mating marks were correct BEFORE removing anything.
      Pay attention at 16:20 he skips MAJOR steps and goes to pulling the secondary’s off, NONONONOOO you have to make sure ALL. The mating marks are line up before removing anything!! There’s more that the three he showed in the beginning!
      You see at 16:50 the exhaust cam on bank one moved when he took the secondary off?? Y’all are gonna fak it up following the short hand videos. I told you.
      This dudes a faking tool. Sorry guys😢
