Rescue of a big deadly venomous King cobra by Ajay Giri in India

- Ajay Giri is one of the biggest specialists for King cobra biology in the world. He is one of the dedicated wildlife conservationists who work to solve the human-snake conflict in their communities while risking their own lives to protect some of India’s most dangerous snake species. This video shows a rescue of a big King cobra from a plantation. Ajay needed to take the snake down from a tree and guide it into the snake bag. King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the longest venomous snake in the world, it can grow up to 5.5 meters! King cobras with length of 4 meters are often seen around Agumbe in Western Ghats of India. Venom of King cobra can kill an adult elephant with a single bite (it has huge venom yield).

I am from this part of the world. Agumbe is backyard. At my parent's place we have a mini forest for a garden. In the monsoon season we occasionally see a King cobra nest. Yes, She builds a nest to lay her eggs. These cobras are very intelligent creatures. If you notice in this video she never strikes. Only raises her hood as a warning. If it was a spectacled or monocled cobra it would have had at least tried 3-4 strikes. Kings will rarely strike unless required. Despite living in a place with plenty of king cobra around, we have never heard anyone being bitten/killed by a king. Its always the other cobras or a viper that bites/kills.
Great to have a comment from somebody living around Agumbe! You are absolutely right, Kings are awesome and very intelligent. They don't want to bite anyone. It would be awesome to film a King on the nest and juveniles when they come out!
@@LivingZoologyIll be happy to get in touch with you if a new nest shows up anytime in the future.
@@fun3721 That would be awesome, thank you so much!
I was almost waiting for the guy to simply pick it up with both hands and carry it, but I think I can see the cobra's point of view, "Hey ... you're seriously disrupting my shopping! And that was MY parking spot! Still, I AM trying to get out of your way! Man ... pushy humans ...."
They are so beautiful ❤️.

Great job he showed great respect for this beautiful Cobra in his handling and relocating. ❤
Thank you for watching! We agree, he is a very respectful handler.
Impressive video. Very calm and patient snake handler who was able to read the cobra. The snake was just looking to escape and protect itself, not to be aggressive.
Exactly as you say. When the handler is calm and experienced, the snake is also calm. This King cobra simply did not want to go into the bag so it took some time.
Such intelligent animals. That snake now has at least two documented interactions with humans. Its demeanor was unhappy but tolerant of the handling. It hooded and showed everyone how big and bad she is, tried mostly to get away but never tried to strike. Incredible!
King cobras are very intelligent, yes. They are a great example to show people that snakes are not aggressive.
Kings are the wise owls of the snake world
Absolutely love the rescue..no fuss ..no drama..no bravado ..pure rescue of an absolutely majestic Snake
We absolutely agree, perfect rescue, thank you for watching!
King never afraid of humans and see as the potential threat, because king is as intelligent as humans. That is the reason why king is held high and respected and worshiped most in the tribal forest areas of India. King is the keeper of the soul of the forest. Bow to the king.
Yes, King cobras are very intelligent. Great that people in India respect this snake!

Thank you for watching! We only film real rescues without stunts!
Something I've not seen before in the capture of a venomous reptile, the way this guy repeatedly hooked the snake about mid-body and simply let the snake slide over the hook, only to get grabbed by the tail, as if trying to inculcate in the snake it is not being restrained, it is free to keep moving, to escape. Fleeing, lower threshold than fighting, when both options are operable, in the antipredator behavioral hierarchy of venomous snakes, any capture strategy that stimulates fleeing will automatically inhibit fighting, and this cobra spent much more time fleeing than reversing and threatening. But the guy made two serious mistakes, both at the end when the snake was in the bag-- but not quite. Guy had his hands on the loose neck of the bag, trying to constrict it, with first the handle of the snake stick resting on the side of the barrier leaving the bag neck loose enough for the snake's head to pass through. Then he reversed the snake stick and put the hook over the bag neck, this time leaving an even bigger opening around the still unsecured bag neck. Such mistakes, symptoms of emotional rushing, are most common at the end of a long pursuit when the pursuer is just trying to end it and rushes, just when proximity to the dangerous prey is greatest. This time he was lucky.
Ajay has huge amount of experience and he solves many tricky situations during rescues. As you write, he is great in handling King cobras gently so they don't start to be very defensive. At the end it is visible that the snake is still pushing its head against the other end of the bag. Ajay knew that and that is why he was leaving the bag opened a bit. The key thing there was to close the bag properly asap before the King returns and it was easier in the way he did it.
@@LivingZoology More to the point, the entire strategy employed was inappropriate given the target, a large king cobra, one that does not seek darkness in attempting to flee, as this snake amply demonstrated. An appropriate capture apparatus would have been, for one example, a large sturdy net, openings smaller than the girth of the intended subject, with a large opening and a constricting device there attached the likes of a snare that could be INSTANTLY CONSTRICTED once the subject had passed. Nonetheless you can stress Ajay's "huge" amount of experience, at the same time failing to consider that (unknown to you) of this writer.
@@fcardini You are completely wrong that King cobras don't seek dark holes. They do and normally the rescue looks like this: czcams.com/video/QeFVZ4t6VhU/video.html This snake was an exception, we already filmed a nice number of Kings and 90 % of them go into the bag in 30 seconds. If there is a way how to safely and easily catch big diurnal snakes into a net, we would love to see it. We work with venomous snakes around the world and we never met someone using nets. For Kings it is easy to use bags, for mambas big buckets, big bag or bucket for a bushmaster, etc. Soon we will hopefully try taipans and other snakes in Australia.
One other great Indian snake rescues once said that a King should be handled using a hook as little as possible ....
I think he has a point 😎
@@abocas Every snake is stressed much more when you handle it with hands, we think that we have a point :)

Hi Matej and Zuzana, always good to see a good rescue done in the best way...Amazing video!!! Just curious, did you also meet Gowrishankar at KCRE?...and thank you for no snakes at the end...just perfect :) Best wishes !
Hello Mayur! We are happy that you like this video and the rescue! We met Gowri but did not manage to film anything with him. Maybe next time.
Im very glad they called for removal instead of killing it.
They had nothing to be scared of. I would have no problem working with a huge King Cobra in the next tree. They do not chase people to attack them.
Also, I have heard that having a King Cobra nearby will keep other snakes away because they don't want to be eaten.
King cobras keep other snakes away for sure. This snake could stay in the plantation but people were scared of it so it was better to take it away. Of course it was cool that they called a rescuer instead of trying to kill it.

Well done, Ajay. The snake was showing great reluctance to go in.
This was not an easy rescue as the King did not want to go into the bag. Usually it is fast: czcams.com/video/QeFVZ4t6VhU/video.html
I was laughing so hard, honestly. Looked just like me trying to convince a large cat into a small carrier, then 'stuff stuff stuff' on the tail at the end!
Fantastic work, incredible animal. The only snake that actually gives the impression of real intelligence and conscious decisionmaking.

Had goosebumps but he was calmly rescued huge king cobra
Thank you for watching! Yes, the rescue was very nicely done!
nice and intelligent snake !
Yes, it was awesome to see it move in the tree canopy!
This is a very intelligent animal. Doesnt want to go into the bag, maybe learned from experience. Very reluctant to bite, althought it has the speed and power to make life very sketchy for the handler. Also, I think the handler was taking too many risks. He was easily in the strike zone many times and if the King cobra used its speed, he would have had a hard time getting out of the way. Even tickling the tail to get it into the bag was super sketchy as the cobra could have easily made a U turn and struck through the bag, especially as the snake stick was not always blocking the opening. In any case a majestic creature and very intelligent indeed.
Actually, he didn't take ANY chances at all. This was about a 9 foot snake, which means his flash range is 4.5 feet - the rule of halfs. A snake can only strike at half it's body length, so as long as you stay outside THAT range, the snake could flash at you ALL DAY LONG, & not reach you - gravity always wins.
The OTHER rule he was using is the rule of thirds, which says as long as you stay AWAY from the front 1/3rd of the snake (the business end), & use a hook, he can pull a u-turn on you 10 times, and you can always use the hook to keep his head AWAY from you... You just have to make sure you DON'T hesitate. The second the snake turns back on you, you start guiding it.
The other thing he did was with the tail. If you'll notice, every time the snake reared on him, he started at the end of the tail again. Which meant he was farther away from the snake & the snake didn't feel cornered. These snakes only flash you if they feel cornered or threatened. That's why some people have cobras living in their homes & NEVER get bit...
The most dangerous part of the whole thing was when he was getting it out of the tree. I would NEVER let a snake just drop on the ground like that. It's like punching a human in the stomach & a lot of times, the snake gets pissed. He probably did it for safety, but I wouldn't, if the snake wasn't alright reactive.
Some of us do this AS A JOB, & it's all about the body language. I could teach you the rules in 2 minutes, but if you don't watch how the snake acts, you'll get bit. And hesitation is a BIG thing too. These snakes decide what they are going to do & they COMMIT to it. They aren't scared, because they have fangs. So YOU better be damn ready to commit to something too... They rarely miss what they aim at...
The world record for king cobras is around 21 feet, in Thailand. That means he had over 10 feet of strike range 🤯🤦♂️🤯... Imagine trying to get that fker out of a tree... Takes at least 2-3 people to keep him from wrapping around your body...
Thank you for watching our video. Ajay has huge amount of experience with King cobras. He is reading their behavior and knows what he can de in different situations. As you write, King cobras are very intelligent and peaceful, they rarely strike. This snake was actually quite defensive for a King cobra. Usually the rescue takes about 30 seconds. In general, Ajay did not do anything dangerous, this is how you handle a King cobra - peacefully, you read the snake's behavior, give it its space, etc. Of course if you do this with a Black mamba you will get into serious trouble. Every snake species behaves differently.
@@LivingZoology You are probably right. As someone who has never handled, let alone seen a King Cobra in the wild, its easy for me to speculate. Thanks for your detailed reply.
@@Completely_Incomplete Very welcome, thank you again for watching our video :)
@@LivingZoology I noticed it was defensive, but it only spun to face him & didn't strike as much as you would expect. That told me it just wanted to get away. The whole tree thing had me worried tho - that's NEVER a good situation... I expected it to come at him after it hit the ground...
I told my boss that I would never work with taipans or mambas again. 1 of our mambas went from being tolerant to trying to strike & flash out at us every time someone even slides the door open on her vision cage. It was an overnight change so it's wierd. & I'm NOT about to try to take her out of her cage & make her bite the cup to give us her venom. It isn't worth getting bit when I have 2 kids to raise... 🤦♂️🤷🤦♂️... NOPE...
He needs some kind of smell inside the bag to attract the cobra. Amazing job. Patient and great with the snake.
Thank you for watching!! Attracting smell does not work well. The best is to let the snake go in thinking it is a hiding spot. But this snake had different opinion and just wanted to move away.

For all those who watch this video..just be reminded that in case of a king cobra bite, there is no antivenom available anywhere in India !!!!!...As an alternative, the only source and relief would be that we may need to go for antivenom vials imported from Thailand, which again is region specific antivenom for bites by king Cobra species in South East Asia...which may or may not work for our eastern ghat species king cobra bites.

@@manuks7871 The way he treats snakes is for show and it stresses snakes a lot. It is disgusting. He lets a cobra regurgitate eggs which it ate, he is playing with snakes for show and gets bitten multiple times. Ajay never got bitten and the snake never tried to bite in this rescue. I hope it doesn't bother humans again.
It did not bother humans, but it was in the plantation and people were scared that it can come closer to them.

What will happen if this snake bites a human being?
King cobras are very shy and bites are super rare. However, if a bite happens, it is a very serious situation. As far as we know there is no antivenom in India so you need to hope for a dry bite.
What if this snake bites a human being?
It is a medical emergency.
