  • Visiting The Scottish Highlands - Lairg and Tongue, Sutherland, Scotland - Part 1.
In the first of a five part series exploring all my favourite places in the Scottish Highlands, I visit Lairg and Tongue in beautiful Sutherland. Starting from my home just outside Edinburgh, I travel up the A9 to Lairg and then on through the mysterious Sutherland flow country to a cosy, stunningly located cabin, located on the north coast of Scotland, close to Tongue.

The aim of this 5-part series is to show you all my favourite places in the Scottish Highlands, many of which are infrequently visited, but just as beautiful as many of the 'honey pot' locations. It's taken me about forty years of exploration to discover many of these places and it's tempting to keep these special locations to myself, however, I really want to pass on my knowledge, so others can also enjoy the beauty and the profound sense of peace and serenity all these amazing places have to offer. Sutherland is a place of spirituality for me and never fails to make me feel alive and happy, amongst some of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery in Europe.

Hey David. Good to see another great vid once agin... It just shows. Ya. How. Well reserved. Scotland is. Up in the Highlands. Must sae. How. Little it has been touch and. That's great. As we don't want to lose that status. Of scotland oor bonnie land we have. And see it. The diffrent contrast wat we see here in edinburgh with everything changein with more and more modern buildings and. Ofcourse. Public transport. Like to oor trams and eco frndly buses. We see that as big change but then. U got further up field and nothin has been changed and. Scotland as it self one amazine. Country to be born in. In many ways. To a modern life. Or to oor. Highland or lowland of life. Both is great. Glad they kept. Highlands. As preserved. How it was 500 years ago and not change it... This why love this country... Well down to another grt vid. David. Hope ur safe. And. Cant wait for prt 2.of ur vid. Take care.

Thanks Alan, always appreciate your kind words and support. You're so right about the northern Highlands being so unspoilt and timeless. It's very hard to articulate how I feel when I'm up there, I can only describe it as a deep connection and resonance with the land, that you can only really sense when you're there. The flow country isn't perhaps as dramatic as Glencoe, or as pretty as Loch Lomond, but I feel it has more soul and, for me, feels very spiritual. Thanks for watching, part II is even better, which I hope to have published in about a week. Take care, best wishes, David :-)

Just done a DNA test 83% Scottish and 17% Irish I was born in New Zealand. On my Dads side (surname Sutherland) they came from Sutherland & Caithness. Never got to see this part of Scotland when I came over from Australia 3 years ago. I'll never get back so thanks for the video!! Great to see it and think that's where ancestors hailed from.

I love the music, love the way you don't get in the way but also provide some timely commentary and location stamps, and the shots you are getting are just fantastic. Thank you much! I have been to Scotland 3 times and it's truly a magical place. Assynt and Sutherland (and Lowlands) are about the only places I haven't thoroughly explored, look forward to doing that some day and your videos make me want to visit again soon.

I'm originally from Kinbrace, about 17 miles north west of Helmsdale. Sutherland is forgotten about by most of the country. Thankfully the NC500 is bringing some attention. Hopefully people learn about the period during the Clearances.

Thanks Trev. Very much appreciate you leaving a comment. Yes, it does seem to be largely forgotten about, but it’s an extremely important part of Scotland to me and one I love very much. There’s a real spirit to the land and I agree not enough is taught about the history and people of these wonderful counties. Best wishes, David

The roof of the wee church in Altnaharra got destroy with fallen trees and was still in state of disrepair mid Spring 2022 and door is locked to visitors!

Hi J, really glad you enjoyed the video and the music. Sorry for not posting the music, it's just old-age and forgetfulness! By the time I've uploaded the video and written the description I usually forget the music and then have to go back! I'll try and track down the specific tracks and post them up soon. From memory I think the female vocalist may have been Emorie. I'm a huge fan of hers and use her music a lot. Have a great 2021 and many thanks for commenting. I really appreciate it. I would always advise contacting them before fishing. Hope this helps, best wishes, David
