I wake up in a warm bed, I toast a frozen waffle, I write, I work late, and then I start over. My family texts, an old friend calls. Every once in a while we can justify a tasty uber eats order.
It’s not s’bad, but a part of my brain is always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
There’s an endless bucket of childhood memories that climb their way up to the surface, and I, like any good American, do what I can to kick em out, to stave ‘em off, to ostrich my head in the sand-but then there’s someone unhinged with a gun on the show, or the crying survivor of the overdosed partner on the podcast and I have to roll the stone back up the mental hill.
I’d be lying if I wasn’t always waiting for bad news. Isn’t that dance beautiful? Naomi Nye asks her mother: “how do you know if you are going to die?” Her mother replies, “When you can no longer make a fist.”
I woke up to some rough comments this morning, and I wonder if some of the folks who choose not to understand my recent visual changes don’t have some similar tough memories in the vault?
I think of @contrapoints, “I live, I exist, as a woman. Which is the only way I can achieve the same level of sadness and dysfunction as everybody else.”
I don’t know. I feel for anyone who saw the things I did, even the ones who’ve only learned the single defense of punching down. I don’t like getting punched, but still I love them even while I wait.
