The disappearance of the Aral Sea in Central Asia is one of the world's greatest man-made disasters. In Kazakhstan, with the help of the World Bank, more than $80million have been spent trying to save the most northern part of the sea but this has only benefited a few hundred people. In this film, we speak to people still living in deserted fishing ports, to see how their lives have changed, and to find out whether they believe that they'll ever see the sea again.

I read that building a channel that would divert a small portion of Ob river water to Aral sea in order to completely refill it would cost around 30 billion dollars. For thirty billion one time investment we could save it. That’s like 5-10% of annual military budget of United States. Humans are disgusting aren’t they?
I live in the southern part of the Aral Sea (Karakalpakistan, Nukus) and it seems the sea covered half of the country, somewhere in 1-2 km from our house there is a huge open area and a large ship .
And thank you all for helping with the Aral Sea, we owe you a lot.

Toro sharp edge dis guy lmao, more like punishment for us human since we like to destroy our environment
MasakanSolaris Russia lifted the Stone Age people of Central Asia into the 20th century and modern nationhood in just a few decades. In the March 1991 referendum the vast majority of people in the Central Asian republics had voted to stay in the USSR. Bummer huh.
What the fuck are you talking about? They made irrigation system that helped farming and still is. It's not like they just dried the sea just to dry it, and of course they didn't expect that it will dry up in the first place..
Aral sea is one of the most ancient and historic lakes in the world and must be recovered.

If you want to recover Southern Aral Sea (which is the driest part of Aral Sea now), you have to destroy the dams along Amu Darya that divert the water from that river to water the cotton fields in Uzbekistan? Are you ready to face the people anger since their cotton business are disturbed? Also, they must be reject it since cotton is one of the currently highest Uzbekistani commodity.

This is the result of soviet union's backward ideas about the rivers that fed the aral.
+Cia89 exactly! Protect the environment. Communist dictatorships like China and Russia dont care one bit about anything other than holding on to their brutal regimes. If destruction of the environment is what it's gonna cost, so be it, they reckon.
Ash A isnt this what govt do in some countries today? First deforest areas and build or grow there second those areas flood third they "solve" the problem by changing the course of the rivers. But, was that the cause of all trouble? Of course not! It's impossible to deal w ignorants. And not only the govt is involved.. Companies, people too.
THIS IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT.
HORRIBLE RUSSIANS AREN'T GUILTY))
Kinda funny that you lob China in this, considering the immense stride they are doing when it comes to the environment. From being the number 1 producer and user of solar panels/energy, to spending billions to plant trees and beat back the desert, creating the most massive hydro electric damn, cancelling hundreds of coal power plants and shutting down older ones. But sure, keep acting and talking as if "Communist China" is destroying the environment.
Times has changed nobody back then knew what global warming was.. it's time we solve our problems instead of blaming and waging wars.
Think twice before buying that 4.99 H&M cotton t shirt
Why
What does it have to do with the video
@@whatishesaying4708 Industrial cotton farming was the main reason Aral sea dried up during the soviet union times.
Cotton is also one of the most water demanding plants/fabrics on the market.
H&M and other fast fashion companies have a long way to go to source their cotton from sustainable sources and especially offering consumers only clothes that will last for years and not be thrown to the trash after couple times of use. *That's why.*
H&M did not exist during the USSR, dear Gemma.

Great ambient music, Watermusic II by William Basinski, I believe, is one of the tracks used. It starts at 2:12 (please correct me if it's a different track)
Where is this water going?
Is it into the atmosphere?
Or somewhere excess is happening? I am very weak in this. In my area watertable was at 10 meters in 1986. Now at 150 meters at 2017. Large scale irrigation from tubewell happened. But where is the water end up.

Got me thinking. If Earth is just a giant interconnected bowl of water, could we direct water there? Because sea level is increasing too damn high in some country.
Aditya P Vijaya Too costly, isn't worth the effort, Not Practical, Doesn't makes sense...
WheeledWanderer so it's possible but not feasible. I see
Well Einstein, If we can direct water there then why not in deserts and dry places..
Aditya P Vijaya: , the word 'sea' here is a misnomer. Aral was a fresh water lake fed by two rivers. This is a land locked area that has no connection to oceans. Rivers were blocked causing desertification.
Considering Kazakhstan's geographical position, not practically possible, for now.
