    I was very impressed with Mr. Bozzio's humility - giving credit to Zappa for the composition and shinning a light on Vinnie Colaiuta for playing it later at his audition to join the Zappa band - clearly Mr Bozzio is one of the great drummers of modern music - otherwise he would not have been in the Zappa band (1) to inspire Frank to write the piece and (2) be the first man to perform it - very nice interview - thank you for posting this - and thank you Mr. Bozzio for sharing.

      This number is only good if you include lots of bootlegs because Terry worked with FZ from 1976 to 1979 and plays on 6 official releases (5 studio albums and one live).

    • @enggopah
      @enggopah Před 3 lety +2

      @@danielg335 He was the drummer from 75 to 77, that's it. He did vocals on some stuff later. Frank didn't make albums the way most other artists do, so it's misleading in many cases to say that Bozzio or others did an album or played on an album. He took lots of material on tape including live stuff and made albums out of it later, including often putting one or two tracks from one era on an album of mostly other eras.

    In 1986, the band I roadied for in L.A. opened for a band called Burning Sensations at either the Roxy or the Whisky (I can't remember which one). The drummer for Burning Sensations was none other than Terry Bozzio. I believe it was right after Missing Persons broke up... The last time I saw him was with Jeff Beck and Tony Hymas in 2003, they were amazing!

    Holy dog mess I want that snare! Aesthetically it is unreal I love the trademark mustache and soul patch. Frank was always smoke in his Winston cigarettes and mega cup of coffee. I've never seen at snare dedicated So well 2 a man as incredible as Frank Zappa just to put the iconic black page note-for-note electronically etched onto that snare is ingenious absolutely touching. It certainly is a poignant Tribute to The Genius of Frank Zappa that song right there in a nutshell is what Frank's all about. That be cool to etch a little pumpkin saying ARF! and a cat freaking out speaking in Cantonese. Wow Vinnie colaiuta sight-read the black page to get the gig with Frank omigod imagine how nerve-racking he's a master as well. You had to be the best to be a Zappa drummer and you better be able to read music very well and be able to read complex music like the black page if you can't he would chew you up and spit you out even Jeff Pacaro was wanted by Frank Zappa but Frank did not know that Jeff could not read music I don't know if that would have mattered they would have just jammed it first but Frank was intrigued by him and Jeff shied away he wanted nothing to do with it as much as he loved Frank and his music it scared him to death to sight-read and try to play the part with Frank and he is a top-notch elite drummer. Anyway🤔 you're the man Terry before Vinnie there was Bozzio

    Cool. One or two of the shots from above that huge kit are photographic works of art. Just had an idea for a video, for which I wish I had 1/100% of the knowledge and skills necessary to produce, of seeing "The Black Page" played on the kit, from above, with the drums somehow highlighted on each strike. A visual and aural work of art. I can almost sorta' picture it in my mind...

      Vinnie was after Terry, before Chad. He actually was in Zappa's band twice, sort of - he left to record with Gino Vanelli (I think), during which Zappa auditioned new drummers. The gig was offered to John Riley, but Riley decided he wanted to stick to playing jazz. I don't know if Vinnie came back before Zappa found another drummer, or if Zappa got one and he didn't work out, but Vinnie returned soon after.
      Vinnie played The Black Page from memory at his audition (he transcribed it on his own, well before the audition). I think Zappa had him sight read Pedro's Dowry in its place.

    But Frank stayed true to the music he was doing and what he envisioned in the first place he never deviated from the path that he created. But that was his whole point was to deviate from the norm and not do things the normal way. Frank's way on barking pumpkin records. See Frank like the weird and when people called him out it just filled him with even more zany music like Village of the Sun. He had to turn music on its head & and rearrange its face. c why not no one was touching what he was doing so why not take advantage of a pair of zircon encrusted tweezers in your hand! Just like a penguin in bondage boy oh yeah oh yeah. Wind up workin in a gas station.... Bobby Brown.

    He's not a drummer, he's just a collector of percussion instruments.
    Too much focused on thinking about what else he should put on his equipment and then he forgot how to play the drums well! 😂🤣
    I know he's a legend but it's still ridiculous for me, he plays drums with sensation not skills.
