Mitch is so special. He is my favourite because his voice is unlike anything I've ever heard - he's such a beautiful representation of what happens when immense natural talent combines with hard work and creative artistry. That said, one of my favourite things is actually when Scott and Mitch are able to take the lead together because I think the blend and contrast of their voices is perfection.

You are correct, they assign roles based on which best fits the part. At this point more than a decade in they usually just know, but sometimes they will test it with different people. What they need in the background also plays a role. Occasionally, the decision will also include who brought the cover song to the group or who wrote the original song. For this one, I don't think they ever outright said, but the entire group gets a huge kick out of featuring Mitch in the surprising parts and I assume that had something to do with it. This was a different tone than we'd ever heard from him before and I think they just wanted to give us that experience.
There's no particular order you need to do PTX songs in... there are a handful of songs that reactors tend to do first as introductions (Hallelujah, Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence), but all the songs are great so you can jump in wherever the mood strikes you. The Evolution of (Music, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Ariana Grande) are popular with reactors, too, as is the 15 minute "Popsprings" video - which is an Mtv recorded live performance of 3 original songs ajd the Evolution of MJ from 2016. Other than that, all fans have their own favorites.

You should watch their mini-documentary, "The Making of Evergreen", which was the Christmas album this beautiful song came from (they are THE masters of Christmas music). It shows how the arranged & recorded the album in 2 weeks time & how they chose who sang what. And they recorded the old fashioned way - with all of them in the studio together! It's an amazing BTS video! 💖

Kevin (the beatboxer)is my favorite! Did you notice he went from singing harmony to beatboxing within one beat of the song! He can do so much. He plays the cello and beatboxes at the same time in their covers of Say Something and Shallow. He also has a beautiful tenor voice you can hear in other songs.

Great reaction. I always thought they ought to win a Grammy for this one. Unfortunately Sony waited too long to enter it as an individual song. The whole album Evergreen was entered but lost out to Michael Buble's Christmas album. Such a shame. I think the to and fro between Mitch and Scott on this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I would recommend watching the making of Evergreen, it's about 20 mins long but it is a really interesting peek at their process putting an album together. Also Mitch is many people's favourites so no problem there! I love them all but I'm a Mitch stan for life!

@@Bite-SizeReactions My favorite is whichever one I'm paying attention to at the time. Mitch's singing is angelic, and his back story is heartbreaking (he was bullied for how high his voice was in high school), so he's my favorite. But then I see the wedding video of Scott singing his new song, "Four" to Mark, and Scott's my favorite. But then I watch "The Wizard of Ahhhs," with Kirstie playing Dorothy, Glinda the Good Witch, AND the Wicked Witch of the West Side, and Kirstie's my favorite. But then I notice how warm Matt's bass is, and I'm reminded of some really good chocolate, and Matt's my favorite. Until I see a video where they're all sitting down and I can just watch Kevin playing his invisible drum kit, and Kevin's my favorite (I love the way he can make me see the instruments that aren't there).
Everyone in Pentatonix is a musical genius. Everyone in Pentatonix is immensely talented. Everyone in Pentatonix is a kind and loving person. And yet, Pentatonix is still greater than the sum of its parts. They're better together than they would be apart. Pentatonix is my favorite.

@@margretrosenberg420 That's so true and beautifully put! I think part of their magic is to do with how close they all are, especially the 'trio' - Mitch, Scott and Kirstie, who have known each other since they were children. How they are with each other and with their fans is so beautiful. Yes Scott and Mitch both suffered from homophobic bullying and Mitch in particular was laughed at because of his voice. Who is laughing now though, eh?! I bet those bullies are not loved for their voices by millions of people around the world! 🙂❤️

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Před 9 měsíci +3

@@neetgupta1 One of the ways we know what good people they are is that they NEVER gloat about how they've shown the bullies up. I certainly couldn't be that nice about it if it were me.
Have you seen the video of the five of them visiting the Trevor Project and talking with the kids about bullying, after they won _The Sing-Off_ (heavily edited by NBC to hide the fact that the Trevor Project was begun as a way to reduce the suicide rate among gay kids)? I watch that video, and I think about Mitch being bullied during his senior year at high school, with his two best friends away at college, and I wonder whether we should be thanking the Trevor Project for the fact that Mitch even survived long enough for Pentatonix to happen. So many gay kids don't.

They are very pragmatic and have been very vocal about how there is no room for ego. I assume they picked Mitch for lead because his tone is more angelic and very pure, while Kirstin has more power & depth in her voice. His is more "floaty" which fits with this song.
There are loads of behind the scenes stuff for them (years of tour vlogs for example) so there are old compilations of them arranging. Some newer stuff that exist of them arranging is the behind the scenes for "Can you feel the love tonight?" and their 17 minute behind the scenes video "Recording of Evergreen",

Another thing to note as you dive into their 400 videos is that they change their looks and wardrobes ALL THE TIME !! They filmed this on a set, and I don't know how much they pay their set designers but whatever it is it's not enough. This set is gorgeous!
Poor Scott. Everyone in Pentatonix (including Scott himself) says that Scott is the one most likely to forget the lyrics, so wouldn't you just know that he'd be the one with the perfect voice for Andrea Bocelli's part? Scott put a great deal of effort into learning the Italian by rote, and getting the pronunciation right, and I'm told that he did, indeed, get it right, albeit with a decidedly American accent, which was probably unavoidable.
Kirstie could have sung Celine Dion's part - she has the range for it - but Mitch is the best one to go to when you want those ethereal high vocals. Kirstie and Scott both say that occasionally when they're singing in a concert they'll suddenly discover that they've stopped singing because their own voices were interfering with their ability to hear and enjoy Mitch's voice.

All the PTX "kids" (I fell in love with them when they were still teens) say that Mitch is the best singer, but I think that you'll find that your favorite tends to change with each song. Kevin, the beat boxer who is seldom the featured singer, is probably the most multi talented--beat boxer, singer, cellist and rapper. The more of their songs that you do, the more impressed you will be with them as a collective talent.

The first few times I listened to this, I was in tears 😢😭
    I know you'll definitely enjoy it ❤
Edit: Of course you can have a favourite member. My favourite member is Scott (slicked back hair guy 🤭😂) because of his tone. There's a certain way he enunciates words and it adds so much flavour to a song. He's got so much power, spunk, and versatility to his voice.
But with Pentatonix, it's kinda impossible to pick because I also love Mitch (the one who you said was your favourite) because he's just got a pure tone. It flows so good, and i could listen to him all day 😩❤.
Then there's Kevin. He's sometimes overlooked, but that guy is OP. He's not just a fantastic beatboxer, but he plays cello as well, and he also sings. His voice is so unexpected that it hits you and you'll need a second to recover 😅 (Check out 'Amazing Grace' and 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Mary Did You for perspective).
Then there's Kirstie. She's got a lovely voice man. Her notes are very crisp and clear. But she can also reach the lower notes with as much intensity. She was on Broadway too.
Matt is the bass. Matt's voice... Dang!! It's so rich. It's like a cup oof warm cocoa or rich velvet. He shines so much in 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch". I fell in love with Matt's voice after I saw that performance. He carries the bassline so well.
Then there's Avi. He was the former bass. You may have seen him in Bohemian Rhapsody. He's the one with long hair, in a man-bun. His voice has that gravel. His voice is very earthy. Like bro can literally reach depths with his voice. His tone is absolutely gorgeous. I noticed it right away, the first time I heard Pentatonix.
Right now, he still makes music. You can check his stuff out on YT.

Yes they are all fantastic in their own way, but put them together and they are heavenly. I have always thought Scott is the king of riffs and runs and his voice is like smooth ribbon candy and still have the gravel depending on the arrangement and song. More like the "feeling" of the song. I can't say I have a favorite because I love them ALL for what they can bring for our ear candy. Thank you and subbed for more of PTX!

At some point you may want to react to their appearances on _"The Sing-Off,"_ all of which are still available on CZcams. It may prove instructive, and it's wonderful watching Babytonix grow.
Scott (tall blond), Mitch (contratenor), and Kirstie (the woman) grew up in Arlington, Texas and have been friends since childhood. By the time they graduated from high school they were best friends. I won't go into all the details of how they formed Pentatonix, I'll save that for another time, but the REASON they formed Pentatonix was their desire to continue being best friends and to continue singing together. In other words, Pentatonix was formed because of love, both of friends and of music. And as new members have come into Pentatonix, that friendship has expanded to include the new members. When Avi left it hit them very hard, but now they have Matt and they love him for who he is.
Basically, think of Pentatonix as a family-of-choice. They've added new members to the family who don't perform with them (Matt and Kevin have both married and Kevin has a daughter; Kirstin has a daughter who is just over a year old and is engaged to be married; and Scott married his long time boyfriend, Mark Manio, a little over a month ago), but _as a band_ Pentatonix acts like a loving family. They make sure that each member gets whatever he or she needs. They celebrate their joys together, and grieve their losses together. They make sure that each member gets time in the spotlight, and that no one member has to carry an inordinate burden. And since they're all consummate musicians, and the love of music is what brought them together, in songs that require a lead they make sure that the lead singer is the one whose voice is the best fit for the song. In "The Prayer" that means a duet between Mitch and Scott. In "Seasons of Love" it means Kirstie belting out those high notes. In "Bohemian Rhapsody" it means that the lead rotates among four of them.
Yes, Scott is frequently the lead, primarily because he's a baritone but can sing both bass and tenor so his voice works for just about anything. But when they were on _"The Sing-Off"_ Scott was forced by the producers to be the lead in EVERY performance (because the producers were afraid that if people found out how high Mitch can sing they might realize Mitch was gay - totally stupid, but it did happen), and that experience was quite traumatic for Scott; it did horrible things to his voice. So Scott has no desire to be the lead singer in every song; that's a burden that is too great for one person to bear, and Scott's understanding of that burden is bone deep.

    Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on CZcams, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his CZcams videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on CZcams), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on CZcams, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

all correct EXCEPT they have used autotune once and only once in their 90s dance medley to keep the integrity of the original since the original was autotuned...it was Cher's "Believe"

This is a special rendition. They are wonderful musicians and singers. Mitch is a natural counter tenor. They have no egos and usually choose together who is to sing what part. Their names are as follows: Scott HOying usually sings bariton but has range to tenor and can go low enough to cover bass if the bass is singing a solo; Kirsten Malanado(KIrsty) is a mezzo soprano whose range if from alto to high soprano; Mitch Grassi is a a natural counter tenor who can sing from baritone to very high soprano. He has nearly perfect pitch and sings his words clearly ; Matt Sallee is a lyric bass, who sings from bass to baritone and occasionally hits tenor notes; and Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer is a tenor . He also is a classically trained cellist and saxophonist. He sometimes plays his cello in their arrangements where beat boxes and plays th cello at the same time. If they have instruments playing it is visible both on stage and in their videos. They have large and varied catalog. They are wonderful group of people who still interact with their fans despite their fame.

You can look through their catalog of songs (covers and originals) and you won't be disappointed with anything you choose! Knowing how you love movies, I would recommend "The Wizard of Ahhhhhs". It was done in collaboration with Todrick Hall and it will blow you away!!! Another good choice is their 2016 Popspring Performance. It includes 3 original songs and their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley, and it's live! I really enjoy your reactions, and I look forward to watching many more Pentatonix reactions! ♥

They are the most talented and unselfish people -- they trade the lead around according to who is best suited for it. Five voices and each one is really world class. Scott (blonde baritone), Mitch the guy you favor, and Kirstie all grew up together in children's musical theater and high school and that is part of why they work so well together; they are friends. Mitch I think he has the best voice and certainly the most unique you're going to run across. Kevin the Beat Boxer is probably the most talented musician overall you should watch his solo project cover of "Down". They are known for their covers but they have some really top notch originals. I especially like Happy Now, many prefer Coffee In Bed; but Love Again will absolutely blow your socks off.

They do decide ahead of time who is doing the lead singing in each section. And in case of indecision / disagreement, they have a sixth "member", Ben Bram, who has been with them since the beginning. He doesn't sing with them but he collaborates on the arrangements, creates sheet music of the final arrangements and has produced / co-produced a lot of their songs.

As far as who is lead singer, it is almost always the one whose voice fits the song and the atmosphere that they're trying to create. It's hard to believe, but there are no egos in this band. Everything they do is in service of the music. You will hear Scott doing his riffs and his amazing vocals when he has the lead but when somebody else has the lead he is the perfect support for that singer. It's one of the things that just amazes me about Pentatonix. Any one of them could easily be the front person for their own band and most of them if not all of them have solo efforts right now. When they're singing together, they all support each other to sing the song. Great reaction! I have subscribed in hopes of hearing more Pentatonix. Cheers!

I think that the most used description of Mitch's voice is "angelic", so your description is pretty much agreed with by the Pentaholics, as well as anyone else who have ever heard him sing! About time you got into some of their originals. I'd recommend starting with Love Again, and for a more current song, Happy Now. As far as an order for listening, no, at least not until you are ready to go back to their very beginning when they appeared on a TV show called "The Sing Off." Those do need to be in order, but you're not there yet. You need another dozen or so to give you a base for comparison! 😁😉😀

  • @LeeCarlson

Mitch Grassi is a fantastic counter-tenor with an amazing range. Scott Hoying is the blonde baritone though his range is wide enough that he picks up the bass harmony lines when the bass takes the melody. Kirsten (Kirsty rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado is a soprano with a voice that lends itself to Broadway. Those three have known each other since they were in high school. Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer who is also an amazing tenor, plays the cello, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. The group's original bass was Avi Kaplan who has been known to blow out speakers during live performances and has left the group (amicably) to pursue his own career so was replaced by Matt Sallee.

Songs and suggestions for showing off different skill sets and strengths: Hallelujah has 700 Mill views ('nuff said), Daft Punk melody won a Grammy filmed in a kitchen and closet on a $400 budget, Mary Did You Know, and Amazing Grace gives you Kirsty full blown flat out extended belting. A few years ago they discussed their selection process and its many and varied but one was everybody sitting at a round table with their coffee and brainstorming and trying various ideas and combinations. Just a bunch of friends looking for the best end product without individual stars. Oh yea, Scott, Mitch, and Kirsty have been together since high school and maybe Jr High or earlier.

And to your question, my favorite is Kevin overall. What he can do as a beatboxer is phenomenal. But honestly, my favorite changes from song to song. I’d also recommend Imagine (everyone in this band can sing).

It’ll give you a window into their process and how they work together.
Yes, they chose who will fit the sound, song placement as they arrange.
Mitch was the one they chose (I believe) for his range and to give it a different feel w/a male tenor singing it, rather than Kirstie, the female, which would’ve been expected:-) they chose to bring her in to sing counter to Mitch. Which worked out beautifully in their arrangement.

To add to everything else people have said, if we know anything about this band, it seems likely that Kirstie insisted Mitch take this lead. Don't listen when they say you shouldn't pick a favorite. It's human nature to be drawn more by one person than another, it's ok. It's not being disrespectful or calling the others bad or you don't like them which is what I think ppl say not to have a fave thinks. We all have our proclivities (look it up to those who don't know what the word means, bwa ha ha), even those we aren't aware of until you sit down and look at your favorite songs, movies, singers ect and see a pattern, you may not know. For me it's mitch, always will be. His voice was what introduced ptx to me, and his voice is calming, almost hypnotic. That's another of his superpowers. He can draw out the emotion in his audience like no other. But i think he is the most popular and the other 4 have agreed with this and have called him the best singer. Kirsty started crying when they got to sing off, saying now ppl will hear Mitchs voice. Even professional musicians and vocal experts have called his a once in a generation voice. It's not just angelic and beautiful it's so different. I defy anyone to say they've heard a voice like his. The closest id say is Michael jackson. Similar. On their evolution of Michael jackson, tell me if you hear it. For more suggestions, "dance if the sugar plum fairy" ( grammy winner), and "can't hold us" for a foray into rap. You can't go wrong in whatever you choose. Oh and I will say Scott my 2nd fave (tall blonde singing Italian, usually the 'lead'. And tho mitch my favorite with biggest voice and vocal range, I think Scott more versatile.
