    Back 50 years ago when I was just 7 my Mom wanted me to learn the piano. We couldn’t afford one at the time so she bought me a paper 88 note keyboard cutout just like that one you made a telescope out of! We bought an old second hand piano 6 months later and I began private lessons. By then I had actually used the cutout to memorise all the letters on the piano! So for me it was a real help. I became a full time piano teacher at just 18 and now, 40 years later, am STILL teaching!! I’ve got a couple of Those music clips and use them with 5 or 6 page sheet music clipped to a long piece of cardboard ! Loved this post!

    The clips are not useless. Put them on your chip bags to keep them closed. Which I think is what they actually are for people who like piano and eat potato chips.

    Honestly, the whole “finger-strengthening” thing is potentially dangerous. Schumann tried to strengthen his pinkies and what happened? Completely wrecked his hands and never touched a piano again. (I think this eventually led to him ending up in an asylum, given his already declining mental state?)

    I feel like you didn't give the music clip a fair shake because you spiral bound your books. That's great, but most music books you buy aren't spiral bound. As soon as you pulled it out, I instantly thought that's something I could really use because I have a lot of books that are lousy to actually teach you because they won't stay open. I have to just memorize one page at a time then open it back up and work on another, and it's quite annoying. A clip like that might actually be useful if it can keep a book open so I can read both pages. The only issue I can think of would be you wouldn't be able to turn pages while the clip is on it.

    The key strip that goes on the piano actually helped me identify the keys beyond the five-finger position of each hand. Once I recognized the keys in the sheet music I put it away. Yes It helped.

    The clips would be good for my old piano books. The balls and the one where you stretch your fingers against resistance are very similar to tools I used when I was in physical therapy for grip strength problems.
    Something good for piano players doesn't mean you use it while playing piano. Doing exercises to increase grip strength and dexterity outside of piano practice can actually help when playing.

    ad.clips) 99% of the music books (with scores) are not spiral bound. So how do you keep them open if not using such clip? Granted it works up to around 100-page book, but it is actually a problem with publishers which mindlessly publish thick book which are impossible to keep open. Anyway, I have a pair of such clips and price-wise it is greatest value accessory I have.

  • @Moonless_Future

    Piano accessories are so underwhelming because there aren't many that change how you play the instrument or how the instrument sounds. It's acoustic, so different amplifiers and effects pedals aren't an option. You play the instrument directly with your fingers, so you don't get different implements (e.g. drumsticks, mallets, plectra, bows, etc.). The sound doesn't go through a bell that can be modified with a range of mutes like brass instruments have. All pianists really get to change the timbre are thumbtacks to stick in the hammers for honky-tonk and prepared piano kits for the odd John Cage piece.

    I have the silicone note overlay. I like it. It helps build chords and inversions, but it's kind of like using a calculator to add 2+2 and leads to laziness.

      But that's because you already know the keyboard.
      Those are likely intended for beginners that have yet to learn them, or non committed enthusiasts that don't practice enough to memorize the keyboard.

      @XJarhead360 Před měsícem

      The overlay was great for me when I was playing more challenging beginning pieces. Once I learned the notes I put it away. Using something like this is no different than gadgets in other sports; golf and baseball call to mind.

    It's too bad Lisa rejected the finger extension strengthener for arthritic individuals. My Orthopedics professor laughed when I proposed something like that and picked up a rubber band and did the same thing. Most grasping (and piano playing) activities only strengthen the flexor muscles. Balance is key to good articular health, and by strengthening the extensors helps many people. This is actually a disservice for that advice.

    @springerkey6947 Před měsícem +1

    I've bought the silicone note strips. They're OK if you're just starting out. But I wouldn't recommend them. Different manufacturers of keyboards have slightly different widths of keys, so there isn't a universal fit, especially with the high and low keys.
    I've also bought the clips, because not all song books are coil bound, and don't lay flat. Also the clip has a shallow bite and therefore stays away from the top lines of the text. A deeper clip could be moved up or set more shallow at the top of the page, but it tends to tilt over if it weighs more than the page. The piano note clip is shallow, light weight and works well with non coil bound material. I would recommend this one.
    The only one out of the whole bunch I would recommend.

    I’ve watched a bunch of videos for guitar accessories and most of them crack me up.. some of the gadgets they come out with promote laziness.. not to mention those little finger tip rubber thimbles that stop you from getting calluses. If you’re going to play guitar, you have to go through the pain.. now, as far as the piano goes, some of the gadgets that you had I’ve seen in the guitar gadgets videos.. I had no idea they made gadgets for piano besides the stickers for the keys.. at nearly 52 years old, I really don’t believe in buying gadgets for any instrument unless it’s something that’s going to maybe clean or repair your instrument.. or maybe something like a guitar slide that goes on your finger, if not a capo or picks.. I just had no idea they made so many for the piano. Anyway, have a great day! I love your videos and thanks to you, I learned how to play Mad World on piano after not playing the piano in years! Be safe and be blessed!
