My wife swapped her Mini Cooper (2004 model) for a Defender 5 years ago.....she's absolutely loves it and has never looked back. I love driving it too (when I can prise the keys off her) Sure it's not fast, it's bouncy, and unrefined. But so much fun to drive! I also have a lotus Elise, Porsche and a Ferrari Mondial t but often I will still take the Defender given the choice.
well depends for what do you intend to use it or for how long and where ... I mean toyotas are great however the new versions you need those eletronic modules besides only the defender chassis may get rusted and to maintain it free from corrosion even in harsh evironments for long periods is quite easy
My personal favourite and probably the best 4x4 by far :) But only 2 things concern me than others. Expensive to mantain, and deep down you now it hasn't got the reliabilty of a toyota :(
@MilitantOldLady Will do, only thing I really need to remember is to check underneath to see the condition of the ladder frame, dents in the bodywork are fine (it's the only vehicle that still looks good dented.) but I don't want any rust underneath. Last week I was in Snodonia on holiday and saw loads of these, gave me something to admire on the road.
i've always wondered how a 4-cylinder diesel weighing more than 2 tons can even go up the smallest incline the engine has 122 hp!!! a toyota corolla has 130 and torque is not high enough to compensate
@MilitantOldLady I take it you're in Britain. Defenders are much more expensive State-side. The thing is only a few thousand were ever made to US-spec, and they were all 3.9l V8s. I recently saw a '94 110 wagon at a dealer, they were asking $38,500 for it. That's £24,000, you can buy a brand new one over there for that.
they were sold new in the US by land rover but with a V8 in them, unfortunately they are still very expensive second hand. around $35,000 with 75,000 miles on them for a 1997 model.
Can't beat a Defender, I'm 18 and it's my first car.. Well I bought a Saxo, but never bothered getting insured because I caught the Landy Bug, can't beat a 200 or 300tdi though, keep it simple better then the TD5 as less things to break!
@00eldiablo00 it has a 2L diesel engine, so it consumes just a tiny bit more than a family car because it has to fight its own mass and aerodynamics, but the monthly fuel bills are not much more than your run of the mill family car...im not keeping track of the mpg, but the fuel bill is no more than 40£ a month...depending on the configuration, you can comfortably seat up to 6 people i find, if you put benches in the back
I'm not American but I assumed you were after having read the phrase "who cares". I always thought that was an Americanism seeing as it's suitably vague and vacuous. "who cares?" went the rhetorical assertion. "I do, obviously, wouldn't have said anything otherwise. Now maybe you have a case for me not to care?" replied the sentient being. ... You get the idea. Anyhoo, I was merely responding to the fat hairy lad (whom I adore greatly :) and his humourous musings on nuclear hellscapes.
@friendlyuser1. For a man who is that much into off-roading you sure don't know much about Land Rovers. They are manufactured in Solihull near Birmingham in ENGLAND! Just like they always have been. And if you do not think they impress, it is because you never been futher out than a rather smooth gravelroad. But i guess that what you yanks do. You think you are off-roading when you leave the interstate highway.
@petbedding01 Is that sarcasm? A Ford Transit is a tall awkward work van that doesn't go very fast. Either way, the gearing is totally designed for low end torque, not high end speed.
you dont need a lottery to buy one...mine was 9000 quid...the bloke i got it from completely overhauled his 1993 model...if i were cocky i'd call it custom all you need to get one is the balls to go for a defender and not a golf
the engine on the 1990-present Land Rover Defender Engine 2.5 L 107 hp (80 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1990-1994) 2.5 L 111 hp (83 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1994-1998) 3.9L 182 hp (136 kW) V8 petrol 2.5 L 122 hp (91 kW) I5 turbo diesel 2.4 L 122 hp (91 kW) I4 turbo diesel
@DannyBoy20802 Is that why they are not avail in US? Is it possible to export an older diesel version from UK. Are there any EPA/customs hassles to import a Defender to the US? Thanks
@jameswmoseley94 it costs me 2k to insure my Landy pal. First car too, 0 no claims too, you just got to shop about to get a good price. 2k is alot but that's the price everyone new driver is paying these days. they wanted £2300 for my saxo and after that quote I got rid and got my Landy. Well worth it!
I found out how to get Defenders (including diesel models that get x2 the fuel economy) available in America!!! Step 1: Register to vote. Step 2: Vote for Ron Paul who would then deregulate the market, thereby getting rid of regulation requirements on airbags. Step 3: Once he deregulated the markets, go on down to your local Land Rover dealership and say, "I'd like to buy a Defender please."
Only bloody safety and emissions standards people tip the balance against works of art and purpose like these things, will be very sad when they go out of production in 2015.
@nathaniel1712 i hav done this with my landcruiser 70series v6 i have beaten a defender many times, i was mad about defenders when i was kid & even now i love defenders but the fact is landcruiser is the best, after landcruiser i will choose a landrover,
I'm wondering, I come across a lot Defender with Auto transmission rather than manual transmission. I would definitely go for a stick shift rather than auto. But, what do you guys think? Should I go for a stick or auto?
Only the US NAS Defender was made with an auto, any other Defender will have been converted... So who did the conversion and how well? Maybe stick to manual, it's truck like so needs to be shifted fairly slowly but so long as you change gear like your driving instructor is sitting beside you it'll be fine.
+Matthew Keith owning one myself the gearbox isn't the problem its more the clutch which gets you. Its hard to keep the clutch down in traffic and I often slip it into neutral. I believe there are kits to change the strength of the spring on the clutch pedal. Also the kit to convert the defenders cost about £2500.
When did he ever say that? It's not like they're hiding the tyres or roof rack. Also when in this vid did the tyres make any difference? A standard one would clear anything in that sequence anyway so what are you whinging about?
@00eldiablo00 to me it isnt really bad...i've had cars that would not go below 10L *caughAlfacaugh* ....but you have to look at the average income from country to country...40£ just isnt that bad here....if you really want to save money, just have an LPG (liquid petrolium gas) kit fitted...that will just about half the bills
wish i still had mine just got nicked as many are being now because the security is so poor so come on landrover get your act together and improve the security system :(
i really like defender but i think its not really doing any progress i mean u dont have to change design but at least change the engine! i mean come one 2011 defender with only 2.4L 120 HP???
I love land cruisers, but I hate their fans. Honestly without rover, the suv market would be very different. Respect the og off roaders, as in Jeep and Land Rover.
Landcruiser! Land rover has always provided a better driving dynamic than tojos , always will!!!! You Tojo lovers do like to play it safe and secure, but thats fine, we now know who the pretenders are as you drive on by in your Girly Tojo "landcruiser"
Perhaps I am replying for the sake of it. Hey what can I say, Im a sociable guy. Anyway, I obviously must have missed something because your right, It still makes no sense. My level of intellect is nothing to do with this, I simple must have the wrong end of the stick. Sorry for inconveniencing you.
@G1NZOU stay away from cars that were regularily offroad, seems odd i know...go for ones owned by farmers or by private companies...i've seen loads of them used by maintanance companies, those tend to be in quite good nick and cheap
My wife swapped her Mini Cooper (2004 model) for a Defender 5 years ago.....she's absolutely loves it and has never looked back. I love driving it too (when I can prise the keys off her)
Sure it's not fast, it's bouncy, and unrefined. But so much fun to drive! I also have a lotus Elise, Porsche and a Ferrari Mondial t but often I will still take the Defender given the choice.
Can't beat a landrover defender original. Three vehicles in one and built like a tank
Love em'.
don't know why but this is one of my fav reviews of all time
well depends for what do you intend to use it or for how long and where ... I mean toyotas are great however the new versions you need those eletronic modules besides only the defender chassis may get rusted and to maintain it free from corrosion even in harsh evironments for long periods is quite easy
It's a awesome car it's not stock but still it only makes it more awesome
Offroad though in Australia we call that a highway
My personal favourite and probably the best 4x4 by far :) But only 2 things concern me than others. Expensive to mantain, and deep down you now it hasn't got the reliabilty of a toyota :(
You have no idea how wrong you are.
Makes me proud to own a landy ! :)
Defender, Wrangler, and Bronco. 3 SUVs that were made for men and no roads.
i think one of the best things for s landy are them wheel covers that say hummer recovery unit
I have never understood the 'car gurus' who tell us that a Defender is rubbisch on the road. It isn't. It drives very well on the road.
the real and pure 4x4, this car is a monster!
i've always wondered how a 4-cylinder diesel weighing more than 2 tons can even go up the smallest incline the engine has 122 hp!!! a toyota corolla has 130 and torque is not high enough to compensate
I've wanted that truck since I was 12 years old!
That was the most epic Land Rover commercial ever, and Land Rover didn't even have to make it.
with those artic tires:
0-60 would take longer
topspeed would be lower
mpg would be higher
:D
1 thing wrong with this video.......land rover defenders aren't that tough, they break down real easy, but still an amazing 4x4.
the first cool fifth gear video
@MilitantOldLady I take it you're in Britain. Defenders are much more expensive State-side. The thing is only a few thousand were ever made to US-spec, and they were all 3.9l V8s. a Discovery could do that, please, a defender can do more!
you can import into america any model before 1997, the reason is because of emissions standards.
best off-roader ever!
Can't beat a Defender, I'm 18 and it's my first car.. Well I bought a Saxo, but never bothered getting insured because I caught the Landy Bug, can't beat a 200 or 300tdi though, keep it simple better then the TD5 as less things to break!
where there are no roads you dont want to drive anything else and thats exactly what a defender is about
Defender is the best Land Rover and offroad vehicle (ORV).
you should come on one of our "tuff trips" and see what even mildly modified Landys can do..
plus for an 07 plate one you need a lottery win.. mine is fully loaded with all mods 51 plate and its £10k
@00eldiablo00

I have one. 94 with all the extras. Missouri
@G1NZOU
they're not hard to find and they are cheap aswell...just poke arround in used car sections in newspapers or magazines
@DefenderRocks this is the gen which was the Ninety, One Ten & 127 but the 1990-present is this one which is reviewed
@friendlyuser1. For a man who is that much into off-roading you sure don't know much about Land Rovers. They are manufactured in Solihull near Birmingham in ENGLAND! Just like they always have been. I would love to have one of these.

all you need to get one is the balls to go for a defender and not a golf
This Had me doing the Tarzan yell half way on...
he's talking about offroad ability, not family safety...the Defender was never really meant to be a family road car...
the engine on the 1990-present Land Rover Defender
Engine
2.5 L 107 hp (80 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1990-1994)
2.5 L 111 hp (83 kW) I4 turbo diesel (1994-1998)
3.9L 182 hp (136 kW) V8 petrol
2.5 L 122 hp (91 kW) I5 turbo diesel
2.4 L 122 hp (91 kW) I4 turbo diesel
dude that's a great slogan, Defender "Get's you there!"
And a Jeep gets you back home...
@@bluescan92 what if home is where you were heading to in the first place.
I'm getting one . Sold ! 2011 version !
@AMVDawg Oh yes, out of all the 4x4s, Toyotas and Land Rovers are the cream of the crop, I would buy a Landy though out of personal preference.
Quite the beast. But I have faith in my 80 series Land Cruiser just the same.
i had one i love it
@DannyBoy20802 Is that why they are not avail in US? Is it possible to export an older diesel version from UK. Are there any EPA/customs hassles to import a Defender to the US? Thanks

Fucking beautiful. Also, check out Jeep Sahara concept on CZcams. Basically made a defender from a Jeep.
is that for complete exemption form tests?
because they were sold new in the US up until 1997.
hey where did they tested that defender I would love to go there with mine
@roadman89NE And the defender isnt sold out here :( but i'd love to see a fifth gear comparo. between the 2
4 people have a hummer!
@toddyboy563 how much is your insurance at 18? looking at getting one myself but i am worried the insurance will be murder
I found out how to get Defenders (including diesel models that get x2 the fuel economy) available in America!!! Step 1: Register to vote. @LostSon101
well it is a native animal here, i imagine you got import costs added to the price
there is 2 models you can import into the US:
1993 land rover defender 110
1997 land rover defender 90
they are on some sort of exemption list?
you cant go anywhere. not across Greenland in the summer... but ill like to see somebody try :-)
nice defender but i do prefer my series IIA V8 lightweight
What the fuck is the point of testing a new Defender if its been modified??
i love how he says glacier
@MilitantOldLady Sound advice, I definately don't want an ex-RNLI one, too much salt water.
i really want this as a first car :) and i live in iceland
+Kormákur Jónsson Its been a year, did you get it?
How come they don't sell this car in USA? I would like to get one, one day, if they do.
The name of the song that start at 1:06 I need it :)
@nathaniel1712 i hav done this with my landcruiser 70series v6 i have beaten a defender many times, i was mad about defenders when i was kid & even now i love defenders but the fact is landcruiser is the best, after landcruiser i will choose a landrover,

The old hiluxes would survive too. Just look at the top gear "review".... it worked after all the things.
When did he ever say that? It's not like they're hiding the tyres or roof rack. Also when in this vid did the tyres make any difference? A standard one would clear anything in that sequence anyway so what are you whinging about?
And thats why i've got one!
@aventguard
yea could be...mine is ex-police...still has a CB radio in it :D
@kingsmountainview its a shame you cant buy it cheaper over there.
@a6km i dont think so buddy,
they also say that in Chicago
@LROVERBOY aww that sucks man
@00eldiablo00
to me it isnt really bad...i've had cars that would not go below 10L *caughAlfacaugh* ....but you have to look at the average income from country to country...40£ just isnt that bad here....if you really want to save money, just have an LPG (liquid petrolium gas) kit fitted...that will just about half the bills
he also works for top gear though
@jameswmoseley94 what a shame i love the defender its a brilliant car
1:20 TO HELP REACH OTHER 4X4'S CA....n't, we' ve fitted 38'' tires! In America, wheels this big me....AN IT'S GOOD AS AMERICAN FOOTBALL, OR RAPPING!
Land Rover + good Driver = Robocop!! (off road)
this exemplar is way too much upgraded for testing as land rover defender
wish i still had mine just got nicked as many are being now because the security is so poor so come on landrover get your act together and improve the security system :(
i really like defender but i think its not really doing any progress i mean u dont have to change design but at least change the engine! i mean come one 2011 defender with only 2.4L 120 HP???
Try to brake me? Bud news flash u only need to wait a bit they brake by them self it s a Land Rover doh......
I love land cruisers, but I hate their fans. Honestly without rover, the suv market would be very different. Respect the og off roaders, as in Jeep and Land Rover.
GhettoMist Jeep fans can be annoying too, they think nothing comes close and make fun of Toyota’s and Land rovers as if they can’t do anything
@MilitantOldLady to true mine was seven and it will out live me!!
@a6km landcruisers make their own ways in any where,,
how?
did you ever go off road in it? Because otherwise its pointless
I get my Landy tommorow
Landcruiser! Land rover has always provided a better driving dynamic than tojos , always will!!!!
You Tojo lovers do like to play it safe and secure, but thats fine, we now know who the pretenders are as you drive on by in your Girly Tojo "landcruiser"
@nem0790 BF Goodrich with 1000s Sidewalls
BURN FIFTH GEAR
Want. This. Car.
and people don't buy jeeps here cause they don't want them
Perhaps I am replying for the sake of it. Hey what can I say, Im a sociable guy. Anyway, I obviously must have missed something because your right, It still makes no sense. just like a tank. i know. i work on tanks. challenger 2, warrior,
@FaisalAMuttaqin make it 4 people :P
