Not a word wasted. That's how a speech is made. RIP x
Peter, the philistines in the academy may have never given you a proper oscar, but you won something far more important: the love of the people! You were the greatest!
RIP
I would argue that an honorary oscar is the best oscar to win. You dont get one for just one good performance. It means you had great perfomance all true out your career. Halle Berry for example would never be considered for an honorary oscar.
John Kelly to Peter O'Toole: What does an actor do?
Peter O'Toole: Make words flesh.
there'll never be another peter o'toole that's for damn sure.
That speech was a master class in graciousness. Truly, he is a perfect gentle knight.
One of the best Oscar speech ever.
The most eloquent man,
And still a common man,
A legend!
RIP Dear Peter. You're unforgettable.
Such a perfect gentleman. Watch and learn next gen. Thank you for your amazing gifts to the world through your acting SIR Peter O'Toole. You will live on forever.
What a speech! That incredible, wonderful diction, honed through his years in the theatre; that marvelous wit and eloquence no doubt as a result of his Irish heritage; and the grace of him.
Ah Peter, I loved you then and love you still. So sorry you have chosen to retire from acting, I always hoped you would grace the screen forever!
Lawrence of Arabia is a masterpiece and his acting in it is unparalleled and unmatched. It is great acting, and every actor after him is aware of that.
@King Royal it is a white savior movie but it’s based on a real person, not like Dances With Wolves or Last Samurai. Also, it’s great to see how ruthless and racist the British were during a time when Hollywood movies did not make movies like this about British prople
@King Royal where did you get this from? Hollywood has always been an anglophile.
@King Royal i don’t think you know the history of Hollywood. There may have been a few British villains but there are a lot more good British characters. And these British villains are always handsome and sexy. It’s all about optics
Truly a fantastic actor and human. It's a shame he only has this Oscar for all of his work over the years. He should've gotten two Oscars before this:
The first should've been for Lawrence of Arabia and the second for The Lion in Winter. I doubt we'll ever see an actor this great or sophisticated again. Not saying we won't, but if we do, it will be a long time.
R.I.P. Peter O'Toole. You are one of the great legendary actors of all time.
He looked nothing like Colonel Lawrence.
Mark Harrison he actually did back when he made Lawrence of Arabia. Not identical exactly, but there was a look they both shared. Plus, someone who knew Lawrence when he was in Arabia during WWI pointed to O’Toole when he was asked what he looked like. Plus, they don’t give Oscars for who looks like the person they’re playing. They give Oscars for performances and that’s what is supposed to matter.
@@Jared_Wignall O'Toole was just a hammy overactor.
Bravo Mr. O'Toole! You were one of a kind. May you rest in peace.
Only 90% like this? Seriously?! I cannot remember a better, more eloquent speech than that given by Peter O'Toole. 90%? Seriously?! C'mon, people....
An extraordinary actor. RIP.
RIP Peter O'Toole (15/12/2013). You did good!
RIP Peter O'Toole (August 2, 1932 - December 14, 2013), aged 81
You will be remembered as a legend.
He was truly one of a kind.
In my book this is the best Oscar speech ever - ever. Thanks so much for posting. I was looking for this some time ago and couldn't find it. Bless your heart.
One of the most Brilliant actors of any generation, what a Incredible legacy he gave to us and future generations! Well done Mr. O'toole, you will always be honored and remembered.......
The elegent and brilliant Peter O'Toole! RIP, a gift to the world!
WELL DESERVED! He should have won an Oscar along with the LEGENDARY KATHARINE HEPBURN for 'Lion in Winter';A BRILLIANT movie!
Mr. O'Toole, you are the epitome of grace and class, with an effortless charm that words cannot pay homage to.
Clever, intelligent, charming, talented, great human being! The love of my life. One of a kind. Worth all Oscars of the world!!!
"Are you ready for them?"
"Are they ready for me?"
Brilliant!
One of my favorite O’Toole stories ….He & Richard Harris were @ a bar,the barkeep said the bar was closing so….”we bought the bar!”😂
By far the greatest actor I have ever seen
Legendary.
Why don't we speak so eloquently anymore? Classy, You will be missed Sir.
He's English.
@@j_scee6819 So are all those skin head hooligans brawling in football stadiums.
Tony Estrada: It is said, is it not?
@@j_scee6819 I guess Anericans ARE a 2nd rate people, then..
@@tomreedyjr3631 Are you English, yourself, or just embarrassed?
he deserved it so much! Great actor one of few who learn how to really act with personality and Body language and so on. we lost a great actor who understood what acting really means. what a pitty. hope he found a lovely place in heaven! ♥
Love Connery's admiration at 4:01.
Peter O'Toole is a legend amongst actors. What eloquence, grace, and style.
Beautiful speech: "I am as delighted as I am honored: and I am honored...." That's how one uses the good old English language.
What a class act.
The definition of class.
Un gran y talentoso actor, que ya no esta entre nosotros, pero en el cine lo encontraremos y seguirá viviendo por siempre, con sus geniales interpretaciones.
he deserved far more than a poor oscar, he was greater than this prise
La primera vez que vi Becket quede fascinado con la película, pero cuando vi The Lion in Winter, realmente dije "¿es tan ciega la academia de no entregar un oscar a este magnifico actor?"
The greatest of them all!
no prompter, no piece of paper, no tears nor ass kissing.........a perfect speech
Remembering a speech this short and this straight forward is a piece of cake for someone who can recite pages of Shakespeare flawlessly on the spot.
wow, what a beautiful grateful speech coming from a distinguish actor...
A great human being
Love him
That moment where Jack Nicholson just arches his eyebrows and nods...you just know he is saying "Pete ole boy, you're the man!" This is what hollywood is missing these days - real respect for the real great actors. Not many left to pay such respect.
Forever lorence de arabia iniguable mister otool
u r the most extraordinary man i have ever meet
The roles he did and did not receive an Oscar for are astounding. Both he and Richard Burton. But when nominated he was always against someone who had a monumental role (Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch for one). A shame.
I wish I could be as big as he is ...so talented so gifted so full of charm!
What a lovely peck from Meryl Streep ... full of respect, tenderness and, above all, admiration for a Titan of the silver screen.
michael parks, Jack fucking nicholson, morgan freeman, douglas fairbanks robin williams tons... and that's without even getting into actresses (or I guess everyone is just an actor nowadays which i don't quite understand because the term actress doesn't seem very sexist or derogatory to me). the amazing woman presenting the award at the beginning is all I have to point out to show that america has had one of the most talented selections of actors in stage and cinematic history.
Thanks for posting this, it is great.Somewhere out there is a clip of OT getting an award in the UK, and I think it's an Olivier or maybe an honorary Bafta.Joan Plowright is in the audience and OT says that he and Olivier " got on very well................to begin with" Does anyone else remember this or where to find it ?
What a person to speak so.
Way aawwwwweeeessssoooommmeeeeee!!!!
You said it better than I. thank you.
How true!
The definition of a gentlrman. We will not see the likes of him again.
RIP ='(((
My favorite honorary acceptance speach. You seldom here such a beautiful spoken english as here, perhaps only when Sir Lawrence Olivier gave his .
That was eloquent
always a bridesmade never a bride
Bye Bye, Peter. Say hello to Gielgud, Olivier, Richardson, and Scofield once you get to the great beyond
Jeden na milion aktor
Saundatron08-Thanks for this post. Those who criticize Mr.Otoole should post their work on YT and we will compare and see who has the dramatic "credentials". His work has set standards that few will achieve. Hollywood does not have his caliber. This token jesture of theirs was to long overdue.
Peter O'Toole was once a handsome ass man!!!
They broke the mold.
I guess Jack and Nick prefer to sit next to one another at the Academy's (no problem there). I just love the fact that O'Toole demanded a vodka bar to be there or else he wouldn't attend. No actor before him or now would have the balls to do that. Proof that while great acting may come from the heart, great resolve is found in the liver.
Hard to believe he never won an academy award, but when he lost he lost to very good actors
He was not just anibody.
No, Sir Laurence Olivier is the most grandiose speech today
RIP
DeNiro, Bogart, Cagney, Edward G Robinson and Brando all have class to
British actors have class
@sacosec Fully agree. Most Oscar speeches would be thanking mothers and fathers ....
@smurfettebr It's music from "Henry V" (1989), composed by Patrick Doyle.
That the Academy of Arts and Motion Pictures never once bestowed this gem of a human being, this once in a millenia talent, this Bard of intelligence and verbosity, is proof the Academy is full of shit. Only once they realized the scope of their failure, they gave him an honorary Oscar to deflect that stain of shit that everyone can still see. Not that Peter didn't care about not winning, (he was such a gentleman) but all of us out there knew the travesty of injustice it was not to give him and award when it was so richly deserved at the time. RIP Peter...there will never be and we will never see the likes of you again.
What is the name of he sound track playing at 1:50?
There are some exceptions, of course. But in large part this is true.
Great Irish actor. Strange that he is from an Irish-speaking area yet has such a 'posh' english accent.
He had an Irish father and a Scottish mother, who lived in Leeds, which is in the north of England. He spent his childhood in Yorkshire and went to local schools there. He did his 2yr National Service in the British Forces. He later decided it would be a good career move to emphise his fathers Irish heritage, and bought a house in Dublin (although spent most of his life in London). He got in with the Richard Harris,Richard Burton (Welsh) and Peter Finch (Aussie) school of hard drinking and general michief making and as a result the legend of the 'Irishman' eas born.He perpetuated this part myth apparently very convincingly, and why not.I suspect he would loved to have drunk with a Behan or Wilde.A good man,if a little economic with the truth.
Peter was born and raised in Yorkshire, England
Why Peter O'Toole has never won a competitive Oscar is beyond me! He is the greatest actor of his generation. I loved Forrest Whittaker in The Last King of Scotland but the Academy has fucked up 8 times. Cliff Robertson won for Charly. That is a joke! And Al Pacino won for a lesser role than any of his previous work. This all seems like to win you must play by the rules of the entertainment industry, In other words, playing politics.
@carogatto Thanks!
Does anyone know the name of the first music?
@foleyp1976 Not entirely sure but it seriously sounds like the theme from the original Land Before Time movie called "If We Hold On Together"
I think this is the only clip I have seen on You Tube where he seems sober. He speaks so well, its like a different person. Check out some of his David Letterman appearances. You will see what I mean.
i think its a little snobby to assume that all american actors are flashy movie star types. bridges, duvall, deniro, pacino, and of course it all stems back to the one and only Marlon Brando, without him and his revolution- even britain and ireland's brightest star's work would not have been the same. Don't hate appreciate, brilliant work from wherever it may come. This industry is too jaded nowadays to pick sides.
Kinda shows up Academy Awards for the political, group think, partisan awards they are - I mean to have to ask Peter O Toole onto the stage 50 years after he first took to the stage, to present him with an honourary award says it all.
Neither Britain, nor Ireland made Marlin Brando, Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Jack Lemmon, Maureen Stapleton, Elizabeth Taylor, Sterling Hayden, Al Pacino, Rod Steiger..........shall I go on?
Also, shall I pine for a remake of The Godfather, starring Ralph Fiennes?
Pffft.
America makes movie stars
Britain and Ireland make actors
The Irish gave Poets to the English!!
He should not have turned down Jaws
Connery is stoned
America made the best movie actor to ever walk the earth, Marlon Brando
nononono its IRELAND and Britain
De niro and Marlo Brando
Irishman
poor class
How degrading for him to suffer the award from, what's her name, Chloe, Melania, or is it Douche?
Way overrated.
without a doubt the most superb oscar speech to date
u r the most extraordinary man i have ever meet
