    They say on Bake Off, when a contestant was crying, Mel and Sue would go over and swear so much that they couldn't air the footage. Such compassionate souls.

      The best part? That's not even the whole story. When shooting the first series, the producers wanted more "drama" so they shot the show with cameras right in the bakers' faces, asking them tough personal questions, and intentionally trying to get emotional responses and breadowns from the bakers, and Mel and Sue quit and forced the producers to change the entire the tone of the show. The reason it's been the lovely cultural powerhouse it has been is because of Mel and Sue.

    Judging by Sue's surprised reaction to Alex's comment, I really don't think she knew she was 'sacrificing herself' while helping Julian. I think she thought her attempt was over, so while it was a nice gesture to help out a rival - which has been done by many contestants before - I don't think she realised until she'd already reached across and retrieved the glass (so too late) that it would actually disqualify her.

    • @sjinzaar
      @sjinzaar Před 8 měsíci +32

      Even if Sue had understood she would be disqualified, I think 'sacrifice' (as it's described) is over selling the nice gesture on a light hearted show like this.
      However, she clearly didn't know her helping out would lose her any points. And so it just becomes the even more frequently seen 'contestant helps out other struggling contestant' on light hearted show which, while a nice gesture, is nothing new. The fact that she was then surprised to find out it would cost her points is where the different is, but she clearly didn't realise that at the time so just thought she was helping out Julian without risking her own points until it was too late to do anything about it.

      @@philh5292 I know. I'm engaging in something called "hyperbole."
      Dunno why you're being so grumpy about it. It was a nice gesture aimed at helping a fellow contestant. You'll alsi note she didn't argue with anyone over it and took it on the chin. She still gave Julian the drink after being disqualified when she could have kept it and penalised him.
      She was just being nice.

      Yep. As I've said a few times in my couple of posts - it was a 'nice gesture' to help a struggling contestant out.
      My other point is just that she clearly didn't knowingly 'sacrifice' her points. That was unexpected as she thought her turn was fully over.
      So, yeah, your conclusion that "she was just being nice" is exactly the point I'm making too. It wasn't sacrificing points, she was just doing what many do when they see (usually one of the older / less competent) contestants struggling, and being nice by helping them out a little.
      I'm not being grumpy about it. Just love the show and watching the clips and joining in chatting with the comments. Though I guess the more responses I make to this one slightly pedantic point the more 'grumpy' I'll sound, so I'll leave it there.
