When nothing came of it, he said fuck it and became possibly the best at it. All the while he is being very loud about his disappointment in MLB in how they are trying to enforce rules that are somewhat vague and seemingly being policed unevenly. it will probably get him in trouble in the long run. I found my control of the ball and ability to hold/take marks in wet conditions increase massively. Furthermore, players have arms and gear oiled to make them harder to tackle and compete against.

He and others are likely just gaslighting MLB and hitters. There's no reason to think that actual spin rates have drastically increased over the last few years. The equation used to estimate it includes change in trajectory as a variable. Such changes are not exclusive to spin rate. For example, the average seam height of MLB balls increased by ~0.001 inches between 2019 and 2020. Studies have shown that even such a small difference can cause an apparent increase in spin rate of at least 200 rpm or more depending on the pitcher and pitch type despite the increased movement being due to increased drag from the higher seams not increased spin rate.
Foreign substances have always been used (and likely always will) and it makes no sense that such use would cause a major spike when the ingredients for the supposed wonder substance have all been around for quite awhile. You would expect a steady improvement as the cheaters improve their craft. Changes to the balls and other aspects are what would be expected to cause immediate significant results. That, combined with how many pitchers are so obvious about behaving as though they're using a foreign substance reminds me of something Charlie Hough once said (something along the lines of) "convincing your opponent that you're throwing spitballs can be just as effective as actually throwing spitballs." I think a little of that is what's going on just with a different substance being the focus.
It would be easy for the umps to simply check the pitchers for such substances and wouldn't take long at all to analyze all these balls being confiscated. If MLB were really concerned, they'd know by now and punishments would have been dealt. It's more likely that they're still having quality issues with the balls and are confiscating them to compare properties etc. Pitchers just picked up on the opportunity to mess with batters heads by intentionally keeping the controversey going.

If he wasn't a high caliber pitcher his words go unheard but when he plays their game they have to pay attention to the issue finally. I hate cheating but what can you do? Not do what 70% of pitchers do and possibly lose your job or up the game so the MLB HAS to stop it all together.

Well after 1 week of this video being posted up the airwaves and tv have been blown up with news about what's going on with MLB pitching.
It has been said that as of now 63% of the pitchers out there has their spin rate dropped as much as 200rpms. Garett Cole (idiot) debacled himself unable to give a direct statement about pitcher using substance other then to say "I don't know how to answer that..."
And now an astro physicist has come into play and has commented on her analysis of the baseballs from 2017 to 2021, that the baseballs has indeed changed to a degree. Stating the stitching on the cover changed, the windings have loosed and tightened over the past 2 years which contributed to the homeruns in 2019-2020 to a difference to benefit the pitchers in 2021.

There is a related problem, though, that needs to be addressed. Pitchers are casually expected to put so much into their work that it's taken for granted that they will need surgery at some point. That's ridiculous. Having an enhancing substance which isn't a drug means more pitchers are competitive, meaning a team can put less burden on the aces. Plus, less pitches are needed to get through a game.
Obviously, hitting batters in the face is not good. And seeing more hits and runs is more exciting. But I think at the very least, non-drug substances don't have the same moral problem as drugs, because you're not placing an expectation on players to biologically alter their body (which is dangerous). There needs to be some kind of remedy to the injured pitcher problem, even if this isn't it. Maybe special gloves thst give you incredible grip but without impeding your finesse?

Bauer is the hero here. He couldn't "beat em" so he "joined em." And now, the stuff he was trying to bring to the forefront--and was ignored--is now a priority because of his actions and contributions. If it's not enforced, why not use it until they make it illegal??

    • @phillipcarter5681
      @phillipcarter5681 Před 3 lety +5

He's no hero. He could have been had he stuck to calling out the cheating rather than resorting to it himself in order to get paid a few million more dollars. No, I believe the word you're looking for is hypocrite. The kind of guy who runs his mouth about cheating and then cheats himself. All that "everyone does it" bullshit is only ever bandied about when it's convenient for the person making the argument. Observe:
Everyone steals signs, and video technology has only recently gotten good enough to allow for effective real-time sign stealing. MLB implements rules regarding the use of electronics in the stealing of signs. Teams around the league push the boundaries of this new rule to see the limits of what will be punished. The initial more minor infractions by teams like the Red Sox and Yankees go mostly unnoticed. So we push the line further, and the Astros use sign-stealing schemes to the greatest extent and success, subsequently being scapegoated for behaviors similar to ones used all around the league. This is largely due to the sheer brazenness of the overall scheme and the poor poor victimized yankees and dodgers.
So, I'm not really sure why I should be upset that the astros hitters, or any hitters, were trying to gain an unfair advantage against pitchers who, through the use of illegal substances, have artificially increased their spin rates trying to gain an unfair advantage against hitters. You know, the reason why almost no one hits over .300 anymore, and strikeouts are comically inflated, and every other ball in play is a homer. FFS, the pitchers have a built in advantage of the game being 9 fielders (which can be shifted anywhere based on analytics) against 1 hitter, and still 70% of them according to Bauer have been cheating since forever.
Either it's all cheating and should be rooted out immediately, or none of it is. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. Bauer doesn't get to be a hero for calling out cheating if he cheats himself. Or maybe he does, IDK. Afterall, the "truth" is just whatever delusion a majority of people subscribe to.

I really hope Trevor Bauer doesn't become the fall guy for this. If they try to single him out without basically hitting the rest of the league with fines, suspensions, and/or bans. He seems to be one of the most open about using sticky substances without just outright saying what he is using. His recent video shows a fairly sticky ball supposedly just using rosin and sweat. I only say supposedly because he ran his hand through his hair, and hair products might be making things somewhat more sticky.
in any case, thank you for the video. If Trevor has some sort of super tacky, if he ends up banned, fined, or suspended for whatever he is using, he might have a future selling his product to Strongmen for atlas stones as they are always looking for more advantage when doing competitions. Now, the grip conversation makes sense, baseballs aren’t always fun to try and get some extra spin with, but it gets to a point where that “grip” conversation makes 0 sense if you’re hitting near 3000rpm and don’t have any control over the amount of movement the ball has. Now it’s getting dangerous. But it’s also just downright dumb because grip is basically more spin, but more spin doesn’t give you control, it gives it more movement, and thats an intangible when it comes to player control. Once it’s left your fingertips, you can no longer stop it. And if it becomes a shoddy pitch that ends up slapping someones chin, teeth, cheek, or worse. Are those same idiots going to say “Oh, it was just an unlucky pitch” or are they going to soon realize that there is only so much spin you can control.

I feel like I'm seeing more errors by the defense in these last few seasons too. I don't know how to check if that is true, but if it is true I wonder if that's possibly correlated to foreign substances being on the ball messing up grips and throws by position players.

As a Dodgers fan, the league can go ahead and catch us and issue punishment, because despite having this stuff, we still losing, so it doesn't even matter.

Trevor should declare himself the "Whisteblower" and demand immunity! Jose Canseco should have done the same thing with the steroids btw.

Reminds me of Barry Bonds in the sense that he saw people cheating which in turn ultimately led him to cheat too.

not only did he called these guys out, he used himself as living proof. when he started using foreign substances and a reporter asked him about his improved spin rate, bauer told the reporter to go read an article about foreign grips and increased spin rates. he basically said, if u wondering how i did it, theres an article that tells you exactly how
