Mike was 43 here. This was a concert held at Madison square garden the night before the 9/11 attacks. Michael was supposed to be at a meeting in one of the towers at the top floor, however, he overslept because he was tired from performing the night before. This concert saved his life.

Actually he covered his mouth to make him sound louder because in that day he was highly drugged with demerol, and also they didn’t rehearse for this song at all. he was really out of focus and he almost didn’t make it to the show.

A couple facts about this show: The 30th anniversary special took place over two days, September 7, and September 10th...right before 9/11. Michael had borrowed jewelry for the show, from a company based out of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and was due to return it in the morning on September 11. However, he overslept.
Second, in addition to battling vitiligo, Michael also dealt with lupus. In the early 2000s you can see that he looks a bit swollen and puffy. That was from the steroids that he was placed on to help deal with the lupus flare ups.

I would really suggest you check it out because I have a lot more info there, even a video of a doctor who went through MJ’s medical records hismelf and states for a fact what surgeries he had.
i don't know the exact number but I can say that he had plastic surgery only on two areas of his face and other reconstructive surgeries. Let’s make a timeline:
1979 - He breaks his nose during a dance routine and has his first plastic surgery ever in order to fix the bone. Shortly after, he has another surgery because the first one turns out unsuccessful.
1984 - During the filming of a Pepsi commercial he burns his scalp very badly and undergoes reconstructive surgeries in order to repair the tissues. Because of the excruciating pain, he is also introduced to painkillers throughout the process.
1986 - I believe this is the year where he got a dimple on his chin for pure esthetical reasons.
In 1984, apart from Vitiligo, he was also diagnosed with Lupus, a disease that destroyes skin tissues. It was precisely because of this disease that he had further surgeries on his nose (reconstructive, not plastic). Lupus also causes overall hair loss, including eyebrows and eyelashes, which Michael Jackson had to tattoo later on. The eyebrows were tattooed somewhere in the Bad era and the eyelashes by the beginning of the Dangerous era.
It was largely because of his health problems that his appearance seemed to drastically change (which in fact, didn’t change that much). The media didn’t help with the perception of his face by the public, as they often gave pictures of MJ at his worst, usually taken like that on purpose or altered to make him look bad.
