Hello Nigel, whenever i watch one of your videos i keep telling myself that waking up and chasing your dream as a photographer is not just about capturing moments; it's about seizing opportunities, embracing creativity, and relentlessly pursuing your passion. Every sunrise marks a new beginning, a fresh canvas waiting to be painted with your unique perspective. It's about seeing the world differently, finding beauty in the mundane, and transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary photographs. So rise with determination, let your lens be your guide, and chase your dreams with unwavering dedication. Your journey as a photographer isn't just about the destinations you reach; it's about the moments you capture along the way and the stories you tell through your lens.

Hi Nigel, fantastic work in Patagonia. I went in the Argentina side in 2019 but I missed to go at Torres El Paine. Now I know that I have to come back.
Good luck for your camper van, I think you will enjoy making it even more than use it Here my suggestions for the van:
    1. a small wood frame to put on a free wall where inside you can fix an apple (the way to fix different shape/dimensions of apple must be designed by you :-D). Maybe complicated but definitely unique. This would be simultaneously aesthetic but also a reminder to pick up an apple/that apple when you exit for your session.
    2. a dimable lamp to make the light grow up inside the van simulating the rise of the sun. This is helpful to have a softer and spontaneous wake up even in very early hours or even during the night (is the same effect that you have when you sleep in a tend and you wake up full of energy when sun rises even with a few hours of sleep). I use an alarm from Philips that change the light from red to orange to yellow to white with intensity grow (check Philips SmartSleep and WakeUp or similar).
    3. I would also include a barometer, a board for notes near a place for fixing a map and a place to fix your prints or reference photos/views of the shots your are planning for visual memory...but you certainly have already considered all these last practical things.
    4. Last but not the least: a comfortable bad for Pebbles and a bonsai of your favourite tree essence as symbol of your passion for old trees.
Sorry for the long message, maybe too much. Good luck, and thank you for all the great contents you publish, I will not care If they will be released less frequently. Mauro.

Idea for a photography/vlog campervan is to create on every corner and usefull spots a 1/4 or 3/8 screwtread where you can mount magic-arms, so you can place and adjust your light, sound and recording devices everywhere without needing your tripods that use a lot of space inside a van.

So a few weeks back you post a video saying you’re going to be making less videos for the future, then out of nowhere two fabulous films from a truly spectacular location, great stuff Nigel and thank you ! 👏👍😀 The Antarctica books looks stunning! 👏👍😀 For the camper, a practical accessory! One of those bug zapper tennis racket style things because just as you’re about to put the lights for the night and you notice a couple of mozzies or midges just out of reach which you just know are going to feast on you while your asleep! 😀👍 another idea a camper van journal for memories and ideas!

A fold out canopy above your sliding side door. They are amazing for when you come back from a rainy shoot. You can get out of the direct rain and undress/delayer outside of the van so you can keep the inside dry. Also some stick on hooks on the outside of the van (but under the canopy) to hang your wet clothes rather than piling up on dirty ground.
Nothing worse than having to climb into your cosy dry campervan while being soaking wet.
Canopy is also ideal for when it's nicer out and you can relax outside the van in the shade or cook under it, edit photos...eat an apple etc

An idea for the van is some sort of sun roof, and something to stand on so you can pop your head through it and get a 360 degree view and shoot. Or similarly, a ladder on the back so you can even get up on the roof and shoot, as well as just enjoy sitting on!

Second, include a printer as I know how much you love to make prints. All the best to you.

Pfft. Camper van ideas, from a guy that does not have a camper van. But I think, in any event, you need to grab a still of you kicking your heals up on the boardwalk and print it out and have that in the van for inspiration to get out there. Having lived through back problems and survived seeing that tickled me to no end. It was pure joy to see you get that excited - and I think you should share that with yourself for a long time. I really didn't comment much on your video about taking a step back from producing/posting CZcams videos but my thought at the time was alway quality versus quantity. So my comment would be, "Take a deep breath, close your eyes for a moment, then open and look beyond what you see." For all the chaos in the world it is still a beautiful, magical place full of wonder and you bring it to all of us with every adventure. Keep it up at whatever pace you desire.

Nigel, install a 180 degree swivel plate under the driver's seat. You can spin it around to a calibrated monitor hard mounted to the wall of the toilet or wardrobe (whatever is behind you). A flip-down table with laptop and mouse, and you now have an editing workstation with good ergonomics.
I don't know about the mobile phone coverage in the UK, but with Starlink RV mounted to the roof you can have a reliable internet connection anywhere to back up photos to your NAS at home, check weather forecasts, satellite photos for location ideas etc.
Also not photography related, but I've found is a total game changer - the Laveo Dry Flush toilet. Expensive, but 1000% better than chemical "Porta Potti" toilets that are usually in campercans. I promise you won't regret the purchase, plus you won't get PTSD from emptying it 😂.

Camper Van: Aside from the obvious - a coffee maker - I think speed-to-shoot an epic scene and efficiency is key … what if you had a rooftop hatch that opened so you could pop out at any moment to capture a photograph in the moment with 360° viewing opportunity, all without stepping outside of the van. Best of luck on this adventure.

Nigel, in your van, I think you need to have a floating shelf that showcases a print that you’ve had made of a recent photo you’ve taken that you’re especially proud or fond of! You could dress it up with some gorgeous lighting or decor to bring attention to the print. You always talk about the importance of having your work printed, and I think that having a space where you can showcase it in your van would leave a personal and creative touch! You could change the print every week or couple of weeks or so. I think that would refresh your passion! Thank you for sharing your photography with us. It’s truly inspiring. 🥰

Amazing images and storytelling. Thanks for inspiring us all !!
    For CV -
    1) your comfort and managing your back issues must be primary objective in designing elements, so think hard about all items you sit and rest on, with proper support
    2) place all storage items/containers at best height to minimize stress on back, esp heavier items
    3) use small magnetic whiteboard that you can velcro fasten or command strip to any wall (and easily remove) to write notes to remember and to do list, attach magnetic items/clips / hangers to it to hold all sorts of smaller items you will think of
    4) design center console to safely store camera with lens attached and another lens nearby so you can quickly grab camera when see something while driving, just pull over, grab camera, lower window and shoot
    5) lastly, leave one area/section of the van open (build nothing) so that after you have used the van for several trips/shoots, you will know exactly what you want to do with that section for the future to improve the experience

Hi Nigel, for your van, I would look at getting a small dehumidifier to keep your van free from condensation and this will also help keep your camera gear free from dampness. Two ideas, hidden security for the camera equipment that you don't take with you, Secret Cabinet that blends in with the rest and can only be opened by a secret pull from another cabinet. Great peace of mind. Also a pull out rack system with a drip catch tray for your wet clothing.

    Hi Nigel.
Firstly Torres del Paine NP is such an epic place to visit, and, if you get lucky with the light, then the resulting images are simply stunning. I found this out for myself back in Feb 2020.
Secondly my tip for you camper van would be to include a small area dedicated to tools & equipment that you might need for your photography gear in case you need to carry out any small repairs or dry off your equipment if it gets wet. We take these things fr granted at home but the day you'll need them will be when you are on the road.
    Cheers

I believe that sometimes you can't get immediately out of the van to take a shot. I think you could make a metal rail around the inside of the van. Then attach a vertical pole with a ball head (the ball head can be detached) so that it can act as a tripod and you could take a shot directly from the van. I Don't know how many windows you have in the van but the rail can be stretched only for the window part and the vertical pole can be moved left and right and locked in the place. Great videos from Patagonia. Best of luck with the van :)

  • @MusicByChadd

For the van: a crows nest platform on top with a chair mounted on a (regular sized) pole that can socket into the platform. Chair or folding railing are important cause you don't want to loose your balance up there looking through a view finder. Also best thing I ever put in my camper van is a little 6" 12v fan. Makes all the difference at night in the heat, and also for drying gear.

  • @draffish5661

I think for the van the obvious is power think lithium batteries and panels as well as an invertor. Insulation and sound deadening keep it all warm in winter and cool in the summer.
My big one for photography will be your work station there will not be a lot of space, depending on design a foldable table coming off the wall is simple to do, a lagun 360° removable leg bracket for a table or a sliding table from under a fixed bed this will also give better access to a big window vent in ceiling to set up a tripod for those early sunrise photos from comfort of your own bed.
Look forward to seeing and following your new adventures into vanlife.

Nigel I simply love your videos and have learned much over the years you have been doing them! I have been shooting for a very long time so I haven't remarked before just WHY
I enjoy what you post. The overriding thing is I get to see someone else simply go giddy when the light happens. I call it "Tinkerbell like" ! Your enthusiasm is just a pleasure to watch. Some might not realize that often at sunrise and sunset landscape can be an "action sport" because often the light is "there" for less than a minute.
For your van.... "Enthusiasm Meets Art" just so matches your approach to not only life but your photography because at the end of day they are just so connected!

Thank you for a nice video! My comment, suggestion for your camper van is to include a small printer to print postcards. While I do not make many prints any longer, I love to print postcards to share memories and moments with others. It is old fashion, but a postcard lasts much longer and receiving it makes a difference over the images we receive and see on social media. A small printer to make a difference. Looking forward to your videos building the camper van!

I was just out on a cold and humid morning and was happy to have a USB battery powered lens heater wrap to keep moisture from condensing on my lens. As for your van build, although it seems like a big investment in space, a small camera dehumidifier cabinet could be a lifesaver for those times you’re out in the cold and damp.

Nigel thank you for always letting us tag along on your adventures, it has been great fun. Looking forward to your new adventures in the camper van - something we all wish we could be doing too. My crazy idea for your camper van is a lens size circular, hole to the outside, with a swing lock plate. Have it closer to the top of the van with a swing arm to hold your camera. Then you could set up time lapse shots while you are out shooting or star trail shots while you are sleeping.

Nigel...you have set the bar quite high for us aspiring landscape photographers, and that is a good thing! Since starting to follow your CZcams channel a month or so ago I am starting to see photography as more than taking photos of pretty scenes, although that's fine off you simply want to share with family and friends and nothing more. I've lived and worked in some pretty remote places and I always took time to appreciate the surroundings that I was fortunate to be in, but I never saw beneath the large version in front of me. While enjoying the big picture I failed to take the time to scale now the vision and look at the smaller pieces that made up the whole. You've helped me do that and for that I am thankful. I see so much ion a different light now. When are you coming to Jackson Hole, the Tetons and Yellowstone ? Beers on me. Cheers!

Been travelling often in my van for the last 6 years and the number one piece of kit you NEED as a photographer in a van is an air purifier, if you want a clean camera set up with clean lenses and sensors you need one of these! Just a small single room one they’re about £50, will save a ton of time in post production cleaning dust spots off your gear if it’s cleaned after a days shoot! (which i know you normally do when you stay in accommodation) nothing worse than trying to clean equipment with tons of dust particles everywhere!

All my suggestions will be around rain and mud as we tend to seek those out as landscape photographers :-)
An area for Pebbles that will keep the mud off the rest ! Get a portable shower unit that can be run from a bucket of water, great for cleaning items outside of the van and highly portable!
Also get an awning that goes over the rear doors as this helps get wet clothes off outside the van and not fill the inside with moisture and finally a dedicated area for wet items with a dehumidifier.

Idea for the camper: some kind of lens holder (peak design "lens kit" is my best example) mounted to either counterspace or a wall so that you have a place to clean lenses/sensors interchangeably, swap lenses quickly if shooting out of the van, and somewhere to place a lens for a moment that won't roll away if you forget about it and start driving. Excellent video Nigel! Thank you for taking us to Patagonia with you. It was fun to look over your shoulder as you looked for amazing compositions. Also enjoyed your excitement when the awesome morning light finally presented it itself on the last day - EPIC! 😎

These were two great videos Nigel, your enthusiasm and pleasure in what you were doing radiated from them. For the camper, I would say record that you encounter beautiful things in unexpected places. For the camper itself you of course must be able to see that you love nature. 👋

as a amateur photographer with a camper van a must have is (i have 3 must’s)a good electrical system ie lithium, battery, solar panel, inverter Victron is one of if not the best for keeping your batteries fully charged oh and a good night heater as comfort is a must and a usable “garage area” to store wet clothing away from camera gear 👍
Good luck with your build i am currently re-doing mine 🫣

Fabulous light on the mountains 👍.
For your van build make sure plenty of power points including one inside a cabinet/ locked box for charging camera and drone batteries out of the way. Nothing worse than taking up limited shelf/table space with charging batteries, laptops ect .
Lithium leisure batteries and an extra power bank ( ecoflow Jackery Bluetti ect ) that can be charged while driving is beneficial when no solar Charging main leisure battery’s .

I love your videos and have learned so much over the years. An approach that I always try to take while at work or in my hobbies is something of the following:
Your knowledge and skills are important and meaningful. You can always leave a lasting impact, should you apply yourself.
I am not quoting anyone specific, and I am sure lots of people out there has said lots of things like this, but its just a good mentality to keep you going.

Hey Nigel, great video as always, as for the camper-van and something I thought of having in my own setup one day, build a vertical pegboard on one of the walls that can securely keep things mounted and charged, this way you will have quick access to everything when needed and would save cupboard space for storing gear.

We have a camper van and love it! My suggestion to you would be to have a small workspace specifically for photography needs to be able to do your post processing. In our camper van I don’t really have a convenient space available for post processing. Another thing I would highly suggest is an external outlet to plug your laptop into. There’s nothing better than post processing images you’ve taken at the place where you’ve taken them! 😁 Cheers!

In my own van, the one I did and I found most important was to have my gear easy to grab in a split seconded, what i did was have a cupboard that door open to the sidelining door so i can stop open grab shut and gone . makes things easier and keeps things safe

Nigel, I loved your Patagonia video. I’m glad to see you’ve chosen the same two lenses that I plan on buying for my Z8. Several ideas: Starlink mobile, safe/dry box for cameras/lenses in the van, windows that open in a way that your van can be like a mobile shooting blind, (as well as a warm/dry spot to shoot from), 3/8” posts near windows so you can mount a ball head there, electric jacks so your vehicle is stabilized, platform on top for higher perspective and launch pad for drone footage. That’s all I can think of at the moment!

For the camper van: I'm sure you already thought of a charging station but consider a portable charging station. I made a "battery box" that I can take anywhere. I take a lot of photos from my boat and have a designated spot in the boat for the battery box. I also have a small solar panel to recharge the batteries. The box has USB ports and a power outlet so you can plug in anything. There are many tutorials on CZcams that show step by step how to make one. Good luck and I'm excited to see your van build videos.

Just finishing up work on my Ford Transit Van - high roof, extended body. I have a queen size, fixed in place bed so I don't have take down and setup the bed each day. Plenty of storage space under the bed. Both driver and passenger seats swivel around for comfortable seating. Many other features: electrical, plumbing, flexible lighting, heater connected to gas tank, super insulation...

As a photographer and traveller around Australia in a caravan, having 2 x 200amp lithium batteries, 4 solar panels totalling 650wt, and a 2000w invertor, it has made an enormous difference for my photography. I have copious amounts of power, plenty of solar to recharge the lithium, so I can recharge all 8 batteries for 2 cameras, 3 batteries for the drone and process all my photos on the computer, and whilst driving the car, it can charge the lithium batteries whilst we travel, which you can do the same if you set it up correctly. We're currently heading to the Man From Snowy River Festival in Corryong, Victoria and then to explore the Victorian High Country, with the battery set up, my headache of when and if to process is gone, especially in bad weather...we're heading into winter here and possibly snow. If you have any questions on our set up, give me a shout. Happy to help. Debbie

Hi Nigel, for me, the most important thing to consider for a photography/outdoor adventure camper van, is to create a 'wet' area in the van to hang/leave wet gear! Good luck with the conversion.

Tried to catch you at the photo show, just to say take your CZcams where it makes you happiest, but we didn't manage to find you. Re campervan ideas, how about a small drying cupboard to dry out camera gear and maybe small items of clothing - perhaps using silica gel pouches (used in condensation traps) combined with a vent and a bathroom type low voltage extractor fan. Got the idea having being out in the rain and thinking of the drying cupboards in some ski chalets (admitably they are bigger!)

Adding inspirational quotes around your van. My personal favorite is 'there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad choice of clothing'. Or the other suggestion would be a custom made bed for Pebbles

What a great trip to Patagonia! Thanks for sharing the videos, Nigel. I can’t wait to see your camper van videos. One thing you might want to incorporate in it is a hidden, maybe lockable, storage space so you can leave valuables while you’re out of the van exploring and photographing.

Hi Nigel Loved the video of Patagonia. Here's a couple of ideas for your campervan. Firstly a really good charging station with usb ports etc for charging all your gear with solar panels for the roof and battery storage.Second.. a small fireproof safe to put your harddrives etc into while out in the field. Last but not least...An Emergency Toilet thats portable :-) You might also want to put a slogan on the back 'Chase the Light...Capture the Wilderness... Frame the Adventure...Follow your Bliss!
I absolutely 'LOVED' your Antartica Book especially the penguins leaping off the ice. My favourite was the lone penguin with his head down against the white backdrop. That image was a beautiful environmental portrait. Bravo Nigel! You also made us laugh out loud when the light suddenly came through hitting the peaks...We've had moments like that too and know that feeling of absolute delight and FOMO at the same time! Thanks for sharing your love of photography with us Nigel. It's been a true inspiration to both myself and my husband who recently got his first camera. Cheers Joy Tasmania Australia.

Something for the van... Given your love of printing photos, you could turn your bed into a massive canvas. I've not tried it myself but I've seen custom quilt/blanket printing. A fluffy canvas could really bring the textures to life!

Great video as usual, though far from a starting point, I have also thought of having a camper van, so aside from my daily living priorities, I would construct a space to keep al the lenses that could eventually be used during the trip, maybe a drawer or two, depending on how many lenses, cameras and video equipment you have, with foam padding on the inside cut to fit the equipment, so it doesn't move during driving. Easy accessible but with some sort of security to lock it when you are out and about.
This way you just pick the lenses for the occasion and don't have to carry everything on your backpack, we all know it gets heavy.
I hope this helps, looking forward to see Van construction videos and once you are done safe travels and beautiful pictures.
