  • An early version of this tune (performed straight, without John's humorous impersonations), saluting John's home state of New Jersey. The song was written by Joseph Cosgriff, originally from Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. Cosgriff’s magazine articles have been adapted and reprinted in the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek.
This is one of four songs John performed with his dad during a concert at Rutgers University in 1985. Their complete set, along with one set each by Tal Farlow and Les Paul can be seen at: • "Jersey Jazz Guitars":...

Not too many fathers and sons are able to do this. Ability to perform like that is precious.

I lived in NJ with my family from 1982-4. We heard this song once while we were there - so pleased to have found it here. Many fond memories of that time - Highpoint, Alaire Park, Red Bank,... The judge who let me off ("In the interest of international relations") when I parked on the wrong side of the road outside the police station, ...

Jerseyite here...Love chord melody and all great guitar...Duane Allman never even made it to 25, cut an album with Herbie Mann and had only been playing slide for 3 years

I never heard this song without all of John's adaptations. And those are funny, but this is very nice. And look how young he looks, my goodness.

I got to see him do it a few years ago at Chastain Park in Atlanta, with all the "enhancements ", including the Billie Holiday bit. ("Nobody ever gets that one," he says.)

Thanks for your comment jazzbeau (no relation to Al "Jazzbo" Collins, I assume). I believe you'll be pleased to learn that I just posted this and the other three tunes performed by Bucky and John as part of the 1985 program entitled "Jersey Jazz Guitars". The program also included one set each by Tal Farlow and Les Paul. Enjoy the whole show at:

@@pianopappy I remember All Jazzbo Collins...I think he wrote "Little Red Riding Hood." Actually, All Jazzbo Collins was an acquaintance of mine when he was on WPXI in Pittsburgh; I also was good friends with the great Felix Grant of WMAL Jazz and Blues nightly (who almost certainly knew Bucky Pizzarelli and definately played his music). I could write more about what your posting and all those great talents. If that jazz, blues, American standards, and the music and style of these great musicians does not live on, it will be like the lights going off and having darkness.

@@jazzbeau507 "Greetings from the Purple Grotto, this is Al Collins, your Jazzbo friend". OR "This is Jazzbo, your Al Collins friend . . ." I used to listen to Jazzbo on WRCA 660 AM New York (later WNBC) when I was a teenager in the late fifties living near Allentown, PA. I think his theme song was "After You've Gone", played on a slide whistle or tin flute. We've got more in common than Jazzbo and Pennsylvania. Between 1965 and 1973, while working in Washington, I often tuned to the gentlemanly Felix Grant and the great stuff he played.
