To be fair some people DO need one, if you have a gap, severe open bite, or severe lower crowding can all cause you to need one. But for most people it’s because we think you’re too lazy to wear your retainer 😅 SO WEAR IT OK! ❤
SAME i got my braces off a few weeks ago cuz i had to move to another country and my orthodontist put the permanent retainers as well as the removable ones
Me too. If you were a minor and they just looked at you and treated you like a kid, they'll assume your best interests and make that decision for you. The real curse was those damned Hawley retainers I'd fidget with and that constantly breaks. Now I don't bother with a retainer for my top teeth anymore but I still have the bonded one over a decade later. Some studies show that these bonded retainers help keep the upper teeth straight by ensuring the bottom doesn't shift and put forces on the upper ones causing the shift. Later, I had a phase where I hated my lower retainer and wanted it off but then they'd make me a lower one and I told them with a straight face that I wouldn't wear it so my options were to remove it and have nothing or keep it but since the roots of my lower incisors resorbed and they aren't strong enough on their own, and the bonded retainer acts like a splint that strengthens the teeth. I notice very quickly when it breaks as I feel my teeth wiggle and the texture on my tongue. Nowadays unless it's physically attached to me, don't even bother because I won't wear it.
@@calebweldon2989 Did they bond it too close to the gums? If so then you may have to get it adjusted. Try floss threaders or if you can get your hands on a waterpik. Absolute godsend!
I think it depends on the country. I’m in Russia and I learned about those permanent retainers through shorts like that. Everyone I knew including me got removable retainers to wear at nights
Got my braces off today and they immediately gave me a permanent retainer. Didn’t have a choice. But in a few weeks I’m coming back to get a real retainer
I'm very proud of myself. I've had my retainer for almost 5 years now and I've only missed them one night. The night after a major surgery where I was sleeping in the downstairs recliner, not my room where the case was. I struggle a lot with depression and executive dysfunction, so I consider it a huge W 😊
holy wow that’s a huge W. i deal with the same things as you and by the end of year 2 i had lost it twice and then it wouldn’t fit anymore so now i have crooked teeth again 😁 so be proud of yourself friend that’s awesome
@@Aerabaker04134 there's not much to do if they give you both of them it has to be for a good reason such as if you need more support on keeping your teeth together and 1 retainer is just not enough I just rolled along with the process And in the VERY far future if I decide that I'm done with the bonded retainer and only want the clear retainer than I'll go for that But for now keeping both
@@Aerabaker04134 if you keep your teeth properly clean both front and back you shouldn't get any gum disease If he said that the alignment would change without it then theres that possibility. The clear retainers can help but idk how much depending on how bad your teeth were to begin with It's still up to you on whether you want it or not and whatever you decide you can always change your decision in the future if you want You don't have to keep the bonded (or permanent) retainer at all and its whatever you decide but just know that like I said it could depening on how bad your teeth were effect them Don't quote me on anything I'm not a trained nor licensed professional I'm just a person giving their thoughts
I didn't get the option and a few weeks ago I was complaining to my mom about how hard it is to floss and so she called the orthodontist to see if I could get it off but the phone said this number is no longer in service. So I'm assuming they went out of business but how am I supposed to talk to them.
I just recently had my lower permanent retainer removed. The bonding crumbled away and the wire was just flopping around lol. But it did last 25 years and the orthodontist said that it was the longest lasting one in his career. And yes, my regular dentist absolutely hated it and lectured me every appointment. Flossing was done with the water pick.
I still have mine on for 12 years now on the up teeth but the middle part broke and still have the bonded ones next to my inceross no gap between my front teeth but honestly it doe stress me out a little bit.
They just gave me both. No questions asked. I got no information about the retainers or the permanent ones. I'm buying a water flosser soon to help with the flossing issue. It's been almost 7 years since I got the permanent ones and I've done pretty great so far.
The fact that most orthodontists don’t give you a choice is so frustrating. I never had an issue with wearing my retainer before braces, but I still ended up with a permanent one on my bottom teeth and all the restrictions that come with it.
I have pernament retainer for almost 2 years now and i love it. I dont feel it at all, they put it hight enought its easy for me to floss, my gums are allight and i dont have to remember about anything.
I've had mine for over a decade. It broke a few times and I had a phase where I wanted it off but then I'd have to wear a removable one and I told them with a straight face to not bother making one because I won't wear it. I fidget too much and the removable one I had on the top would break every 4 months or so. Permanent ones can be reattached easily. These retainers are stronger than braces and floss threaders and water flossers help tremendously! People generally just suck at flossing, and I used to be guilty of this. The other reason I have one on my lower incisors is due to root resorption and my teeth aren't very strong on their own so I notice rather swiftly when some of the bonding breaks because my tooth has movement and there's a notable difference in texture. My tongue playing with the part acts as a constant reminder to get it fixed.
An interesting thing is that I haven't worn my top retainer for several years since it was a Hawley retainer that continuously breaks and I stopped bothering with it when the insurance refused to cover it. My teeth barely shifted, in fact that shifting was basically the teeth settling into their positions. Studies have shown that the forces your bottom teeth exert on the top ones can cause them to shift and since the lower incisors have smaller roots, they are the most likely to shift. The study also shows that as long as your bottom teeth are in the proper positions, it will help retain the positions of their corresponding teeth (upper & lower).
@@ultramasterultra5724 Not if it comes loose and gets lodged in your throat while you sleep and you choke yourself awake and have to fish it out in a frenzy.
@@ultramasterultra5724 yes but you have to remember about it, you have to clean it, its sometimes hard to get the air at night and you can lose it... Idk its too much trouble for me but i get that someone might prefer it
They put the permanent retainer and gave me the clear retainers to wear only at night, it sucks because I literally struggle to floss in that part! I wear my retainers nightly
I forgot the name, but have you used the floss that is regularly used by people who have braces? The tip is firm, so you're able to slide it through your teeth.
I have a lower permanent retainer that’s been there ever since my braces came off in middle school. I had the gum resorption problem on 1 tooth and have to have a tissue graft done in high school & it was absolutely traumatic from the numbing shot wearing off while the Dr was stitching. He straight up paused mid-stitch to ask if it wore off as I was fully crying in the chair 💀
That is horrible I hope you can find a new better dentist. I am an assistant over 17 years and that is absolutely unacceptable!!! It is 2023, with current advances there is zero reason to be in pain in the chair (aside from severe infection which makes numbing nearly impossible but even then we can give you sleepy juice or happy gas or straight up sedation lol). A good dentist will take the time and care to be methodical and gentle and will educate and require all of his staff to do the same. 🥰
My orthodontist put one on me without asking and then refused to take it off. Eventually it broke off and he refused to remove the left over glue stuff that was still there and said that he would only put the permanent retainer back on but I refused. I stopped seeing the orthodontist and I had to go to an all new dentist office before I could get the left over glue removed. That was also the day I found out that my old dentist had never scraped the tartar off my teeth in my entire childhood.
When I had braces back in the late 80s early 90s, I had some seriously jacked up teeth. I worked too long and too hard to get my teeth straight that I was not going to let them go crooked again. I made sure I wore my retainers like I was supposed to!
I got one when I got my braces off as a teen and was FURIOUS since they didn't ask or warn me. It started irritating my tongue and was hard to floss around and one day it occurred to me I'm an adult and can just get a removable one lol. Best decision ever.
got mines off and told them i didnt want em. i said i treated the rubber bands like retainers (as in wearing time) and they trusted my choice cause i wore them allot
You should be wearing the removable ones regardless of whether you got a fixed retainer or not. The fixed retainer is only going to hold the teeth it’s touching, which isn’t all of your teeth. To prevent shifting, you should be wearing your clear plastic retainers!!
I was given a permanent and plastic one. At some point in the 3 weeks between getting my braces off and my biannual dentist appointment… the permanent one broke. My dentist pointed it out to me and showed me what a broken one looked like. It was behind my two top front teeth so I couldn’t see it without using a mirror. I called my ortho and got an appointment for a couple days later to fix it (wearing my retainer full time as I was supposed to) and they SCOLDED ME for not coming in when it first broke. I said I don’t know what they expected me to do. It wasn’t obviously broken (the bond came partially off the back on one tooth). In order to see it was broken… I would literally have to be poking around and looking for it with dentistry tools which normal people don’t do. And I called them the day I found out it was broken. The lady also scolded me because my teeth were still crooked (I was an early deband) and she said she could see I wasn’t wearing my retainer and that my teeth have moved so much that they can’t be fixed without braces again. I told her I’d been wearing it religiously and she called me a liar. Then she pulled up the pictures that were taken of my mouth the day I got them removed and realized I was telling the truth. I was super embarrassed because there were other chairs in the room and the other patients could see and hear her scolding me
The first orthodontist i went to was also terrible. But luckly they lied in letters to my dentist who went to court for me. Like the orthodontist was so petty he called almoast every other orthodontist and told them not to take me as a patient (wich is ilegal) i was so happy i got to go to another orthodontist. And the new one was really nice
I got my braces off, got a removable retainer, wore it religiously, and within a month my teeth had bent my retainer out of shape and were almost back in their original positions. I went back, got lower braces on for another few months, and then got a permanent retainer attached for about 4.5 years. One day it detached from one of my teeth, and when I went to the orthodontist, they let me just get it taken off and I got another removable one. Four years on and the removable one has been plenty this time around!
I didn’t get an opinion until I had gum recession and had to go back in braces to try and fix it, when they tried to put them back in after the braces i was like: oh naw man. And now I have regular retainer😂😅
My boss got her permanent retainer for 26 years now. Never had an issue. When you put the on corectly it wont come off The way they put the one on the picture is so wrong. You need to put a thin layer of composite on the WHOLE back of the tooth. Bot just a drop. If your orthodontist does it like the picture, they want it to break so they can make more money out of you.
me currently with a broken “permanent” retainer literally losing my mind: this is exactly what i needed to hear ALSO THEY DIDN’T TELL ME THERE WAS ANOTHER OPTION IN THE FIRST PLACE THEY JUST PUT IT IN THERE WITHOUT EVEN TELLING ME HGJBngggjHH HNAGNANG
my sister got one bc she never wore her retainer and ended up needing bottom braces THREE times. after the third time they suggested the permanent one 😂
My orthodontist actually complemented how much I wear my night retainer. The reason I have a permanent braces on my two front teeth and 75% of my lower teeth is because my teeth don't like being told what to do . I also am going to have them until I get my wisdom teeth removed so there is still hope!
I never got an option, they gave me a plastic nighttime retainer and a permanent retainer on the top and bottom. I’m planning on getting the perm retainers removed as soon as possible though. I hate them with a passion
@@mlem.2829you will most definitely have to get a new molding of your teeth for a new pair of retainer because when they do the cat scan of your teeth they often times scan with the permanent as I’ve had done but soon I’ll most definitely get mines off
@@jayskiii__6441i know this is a very long time later but can you let me know what happened? I didnt get the choice either and got them on the top and bottom, if i end up removing them do my nightly retainers fit fine?
@@Valyntin oh!! Just saw this now, and I actually recently got them removed!! I had a nighttime retainer only for the top before getting the wires removed, and what they did was remove the wires and check if the plastic retainer still fit, then made a mold for the bottom row of teeth. I now wear two plastic retainers every night. As for if your nighttime retainer will still fit - it’s hit or miss from what they said. There’s a chance it will, but also a chance they’ll have to make you a new one.
People mistake how easy it is to add something like a retainer into your routine, it's really easy, once you brush your teeth at night, ask a family member to help remind you for the first week or so, and then after a while you just have it as part of your routine!
My mom has a permanent retainer and she hates it. She says it makes it harder to floss. I have had my braces for almost a year and a half which is when I get them off. I really hope I just have to get an clear retainer. 😭
Tell her to get floss threaders and a waterpik. It works wonders! If you fidget a lot or have resorbed roots like me, bonded retainers are magnitudes better. 90 seconds of flossing with threaders is way better than having an expensive and equally delicate fidgit in your mouth all day. It's completely up to you, you know you best. If you don't lose things often and don't fidgit a lot and have trouble flossing still, a clear removable retainers are best (make sure you clean it when you brush your teeth) Whatever you do don't get a Hawley retainer (the ones made of acrylic and metal wires) mark my words if you thought bonded retainers break a lot have never dealt with Hawleys as those things are the devil's incarnate and straight up evil!
@@ujalakumari353 The assistant at the orthodontists office said it was for security reasons. It looks like a tiny wire on the inside of the bottom row of teeth. It spans like 4 bottom teeth wide or so.
@@ujalakumari353 After Invisalign or braces! It seems like they do it where the teeth are smaller or skinnier. I would assume they do that to avoid them moving again so they don’t end up breaking from having to be moved again.
Not even my orthodontist but her helper was going to force me to come back for the permanent retainer then I started crying at the reception. My mother then asked my orthodontist and she said it was the removable retainer. Not sure why her helper wants to take control she even hates me. Her helper is even rough too with her duties on me when I had to get braces adjustments. So yeah, temporary is what I want. And my orthodontist the professional said the temporary retainers were my aftercare not permanent retainers. That helper was going to ruin me for real. I have my braces off and I am using my removable retainer. The helper is not the professional.
My dad had to get permanent retainers after he got his braces taken off a third time when he was 35. He still hasn't broken his on accident, and he has had no issues with flossing, mind you he's 48. Sometimes it is worth it if you really are that bad at remembering your retainer.
When I stopped wearing braces in 2019, I was given the option and was *very* against the permanent retainer. I’ve tried to be as diligent as possible about wearing mine because I’d much rather have to do that than have something permanant
I’m glad I got a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. I wore my removable retainer for my top teeth for around 6 months before I just kinda gave up on it (like I figured would probably happen, I’m shit at routines) and cuz it had made me start wanting to clench my jaw for some reason Update: my permanent retainer came off lmao
@duncanpincushion9980 it was for me since I knew right from the start that there wasn’t a chance in hell I’d be able to remember to wear a retainer regularly (I was right, I haven’t worn it in over a year)
Im so happy that I didnt get permanent top retainer. After I was done with my braces it was impossible to eat food. I let my teeth shift back and it was possible again
i didn’t get a choice on whether to get a permanent one or a plastic one, they told me they were going to give me both and then didn’t give me a plastic one and when my permanent broke, the lady said “well someone hadn’t been wearing their retainer” “SARAH NO ONE GAVE ME ON GIRL MIND YOIR BUSINESS!” smh 🤦♀️
I am so thankful for my permanent retainer. Without it my teeth would go crooked again in a split second. I didnt wear my temporary retainer very much 😬😂
Me literally thinking how I take out my removable retainer 24/7 me:I need to stop I don't want a permanent retainer like my teacher you just saved my life thank you bentist
I wear my retainers every night for 12 hours straight It's not the worse thing ever Yeah, it was painful or uncomfortable for months, but now I don't have a problem
The no one told you part hits exeteemly hard right now im recovering from double jaw surgery right now and before this they told me 6 months of braces then the surgery and then ill recover from the surgery in a couple weeks and be done. Now that its to late to back outve the surgery they told me the truth the recovery time for my jaws is like 3 months just to be baseline normal again and anywhere from 6 months to a year to be normal and healed and that i not only need braces for another year and a half but i also need to wear a retainer the rest of my life…. Genuinely consider suing both the orthodontist and the oral surgeon and dissassociating from the people in my life who convinced me to do all this
I've been just fine with my permanent retainer. I just buy those tips to floss, and it doesn't feel broken. It just feels like it always has but without any pain.
When I got my braces, my dentist told me that he’s not going to put a permanent retainer in and instead work on why the teeth are moving. He told me that when I swallow, I’m pressing my tongue against the teeth which isn’t good. So I had to take logopedics sessions to correct my swallowing and it helped. But it doesn’t mean you don’t have to wear a removable retainer. Because when I stop using mine, and after a few months tried it again, it didn’t fit anymore. So I’m just putting this out there, hope this helps!
Me who has just decided to live with and love my tooth gap because the pain of having braces and shit for a moderate increase in attractiveness just isn't worth it
I've had it for 5 years now and i didn't even remember them until i felt them up (mines are only in my upper teeth), but my friends can see them sometimes and i have to explain to them why i have a metal behind my upper teeth lmao
If you only wear a night-time retainer, start storing the container on top of your pillow. Make a rule you're not allowed to lie down or rest your head til it's in. It will quickly become part of your routine and be done without any thought or feeling of inconvenience.
When I got my braces off after almost 6 years of having them on. I literally was on the cusp of having a panic attack when they were pulling out more wire. I'm so glad I asked because I really have never ask. I looked at her like she was crazy and I said hell no. You are not gluing more metal in my mouth that I have to come back to get fixed. So I got retainers instead.
Mine was only attached to my bottom canines; a couple years ago, one side popped off when i was trying to floss. I mentally gave my ortho the middle finger since he never asked me before putting it in, and i never wanted it anyway, so i went to my dentist to get it removed. Among the top 5 best decisions I've ever made.
i didn’t get a choice they just put it in top and bottom and gave me a removable retainer too D: when they first put it in i was horrified bc the glue felt so massive and chunky in my mouth. all of 2 weeks later i forgot all about it lmao. it’s been 4 months now and i had completely forgotten and this video just reminded me it’s in there 😂
As a former dental nurse in an orthodontic practice we ALWAYS SAY there are 2 options In regular almost every patient decided for Retainers bc you don't have to worry that your front teeth move. Ususally we do both, removable Retainer AND fixed ones You CAN floss them ofc if the doctor is not stupid and puts the fixed Retainets TOO LOW. Just use floss with a thicker mid section and waxed beginning and then fiddle the floss between your teeth😌 I also wear two fixed Retainer and never had any problems with it
@@Sugarr17 at first you have to get used to the removable retainers of course but if you notice, that one of your removable retainers hurt on the same spit all the time then it needs to be adjusted It's normal at first that your teeth hurt a bit bc the retainers are a bit tight at first but after a while, wearing them every night at first you slowly get used to them Figure it out: does it always hurt on the same spot when you put them im (for example your gums) or do you have tp get used to them? Are they hard to put in or not, if yes then they're too tight and need to be adjusted too, NEVER do it yourself!
@@Sugarr17 wait a bit until the pain stops and then wear the retainer again You can keep an eye to the spot if the retainer makes it worse again, if it does then it wasn't adjusted enough
I got a permenant retainer. It broke within the first 2 weeks and I didn't notice until my teeth shifted. Now my bottom 4 front teeth are a little off but I finally got a bottom retainer. Because I'm Not getting braces again lol 10/10 regular bottom retainer is better
my orthodontist didn’t give me a choice 😭 i’m amazing at wearing my retainer, and i wish they would have just given me removable ones so i could actually floss
It wasn't actually made clear to me that I was supposed to wear the retainer from then on. And it got a weird hole in it and they didn't explain how to clean it so it was just generally gross (I mean, I did use soap and water, so no germs, but it smelled). Anyway that ended up in the trash less than a year after I got my braces off. So glad young folks today have more resources for good information!
My siblings stole my retainers and were wearing them like vampire teeth. Mom didn't care, and they were lost to the void. My teeth have shifted a little over the years, but they are still way better than they were. No longer called dog mouth for my overlapping canines.
I have them on the top and bottom and an Invisalign retainer on top which I regret not wearing in my late teens and leaving behind when I moved out in 2020 so I'm getting a new one now that I'm taking care of myself again. I'm really lucky that after 10 years, my bonded retainer is still almost completely intact. There's a tiny bit of movement if I bite down really hard on a specific bottom tooth but it doesn't move when brushing my teeth or at the dentist sooo I guess it's a win.
I didn't get a choice😢 I'm stuck with a permanent retainer. They also gave me this floss with a harder end that's supposed to slide underneath, but it doesn't work, so I just brush super good, and skip the flossing part
I have braces right now and I can already tell that I'm not going to get one of these. Turns out that I wear my rubber bands so well that I won't have to be in braces for as long as they expected. And because my orthodontist knows that I am a diligent trustworthy patient I'm 99% sure that they will just give me a removable one. Fingers crossed 🤞
If they try a permanent one, tell them exactly what you just wrote. I have a permanent one, wasn’t given a choice. It’s been 20 years and I’ve taken pretty good care of it but I’m going to ask my next dentist if they can remove it. It’s annoying and interferes with flossing a lot
SAME! I'm getting my braces off in a month which is like 3 months earlier than I was predicted to get them off, all because I wore the rubber bands! But.... Last appointment my orthodontist mentioned a permanent retainer, but didn't give me a choice about a removable one 😢 so now my dad is going to my next appointment to talk to him cause he doesn't want me to have a permanent one either 😁
I was given the permanent retainer, no choice, but it's probably for the best. I was also given overnight retainers because I kept grinding my teeth in my sleep, but it was so bad that I kept breaking the retainers.
I have one, they never gave me an option, they just put it on. But, for flossing, I use the little “Christmas tree” brush they give you when you first get braces to clean your brackets. I just shove it in between my teeth and it works pretty well!
I had braces from age 11-13. I wore my retainer until it was literally too small for my palate. Then my wisdom teeth came in at 17 and slowly pushed all my teeth forward until I had them removed at 22. Now my teeth are more crooked than they were before braces.
I have a closed up gap and only had to get top braces (and a palate expander for a year). I got a bonded retainer and was asking about the cons because I remembered this video and the lady told me "oh well mine has lasted 15 years!!" and then told me when to pick my actual retainer up.
The day I got my braces off, they immediately put a bonded retainer on my bottom teeth and then made the mold of that for my clear retainer. I hated my teeth prior to braces, so you bet your ass I wore that retainer every damn night. My permanent retainer has lasted a solid decade so far with no sign of budging.
At this point in my life, I think I would just rather live with my crooked teeth. Unless they're causing other health issues, I just don't want to to bother with the cost and maintenance of braces, and having teeth pulled. I just seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.
I got my braces off today and about two weeks ago they recommended I get the permanent one and I ended up telling them no. They were very adamant about it and I just kept telling them I already barely floss, I hated the maintenance so I think it would be best for all of us if I got the removable ones. They made a face at me but eventually gave me what I wanted. They did the same thing to me when I told them I didn’t want a root canal on one of my molars and that I’d rather have them pull it out considering the same tooth on the other side was impacted by my wisdom teeth and had to be pulled out as well… some dentists are really jerks tbh 😭
I have a normal retainer and its honestly not at all hard to just wear them all day, it does give me a bit of a lisp which is annoying but I still dont understand why people are complaining, like its not that bad😅😅
When I got my braces off, they put one of those on my bottom teeth, and I got a plastic one for the top teeth. In the summer my bottom retainer broke off, and the orthodontist asked if I wanted it back on and I said “No”. Now I have two plastic retainers, and I’m much happier. However, I think I grind my teeth at night because the top retainer has holes and cracks in it. 😬
I’m so retroactively disappointed in my orthodontist because when I got my braces off and went to the appointment where they gave me my retainer it didn’t fit. I told them that it didn’t fit and they said they could make me a new one but I would have to pay for a new one because “nothing was wrong” with this one. I could not, at 15 years old, go tell my recently widowed mother that she needed to pay for another retainer. So I never wore it, because it never fit. For some reason it took me years to realize that I was not at fault for that situation.
I wasn't given an option. They just gave me a top and bottom permanent one. I haven't had any troubles so far outside of the glue getting shaved down a little on one of the middle teeth. Flossing is pretty easy, I just kept using the ones I used during braces as well as a waterpick. My orthodontist told me that if one brakes, to just call them up so they can fix it. I've had them for almost 8 years, and they haven't broken yet. 🤞
here’s the thing: mine very much IS permanent. i’ve had my braces off for over four years with no damage, and i’ve been told by many others from my orthodontist (and my dental hygienists) that i will go to the grave with it. it’s basically cemented to my teeth and near impossible to floss. i will never escape.
I think it is I think you should be given the option. I think you should be told the pros and cons of the different kinds of retainers in given the option because I had retainers that a removable. I had the ones that are like the clear click on plastic ones, and they were great, and they worked amazingly, except I have a really bad habit having object permanence issues like a lot of emergency and I literally forgot to wear my retainers for over seven years. Surprise surprise my teeth have shipped and I now need to get braces on again or Invisalign or something like that but the point is I can no longer wear my retainers and the two years that I spent in braces to fix my overbite as well as some of the crawling issues in my teeth is now down the drain because my teeth have shifted to the point where I have overlapping issues on my bottom teeth. Credit I probably would’ve hated having a bonded retainer as well again for the whole lake there are several cons to it however, I also think I would’ve just rather had that done and not have to worry about. Am I remembering to wear my retainers or not because I am so angry at myself for forgetting, and screwing my teeth back up
My dads cousins who works in a dental office was like "get a permanent retainer when your braces get off, most dentist dont recommend them but..." And i looked at my mom horrified. And my mom was like "shes responsible...enough" 😅
Yeah, they didn't tell me it wasn't _literally_ permanent... my new (at the time) dentist was SHOCKED to find I'd had them for *eleven years.* I do not miss them.
i was given a permanent retainer by an orthodontist who only anchored it to two teeth at the ends. it snapped twice before i insisted on having it removed so i could go to college without worrying what i would do when it inevitably broke again. i now have a plastic retainer like i always should have. and yes, i wear it.
I got a permanent retainer and actually got used to it. But flossing was a major issue. It eventually broke, so I got a normal retainer, which I had to wear every night. It's much better, and I integrated wearing them into my routine, so I barely forget them.
i love the permanent retainer. i have one on my bottom teeth but i have a removable one for the top. i haven't put the top one on in like a year! my front teeth have drifted a little, i wish they just gave me permanent for both
yeah i got them (i didn't have an option really) and i hate every second of it, i got cavities under them......but the thing with regular retainers - i forgot to wear them allllll the time that i had them so the permanent ones are better than nothing yknow i often forget to brush my teeth regularly bc of depression and adhd so....
sigh here i am with mine that just broke panicking because i dont wanna go to the dentist. Just like many here i did not get a choice, and god i wish i did. Maybe ill get mine replaced and i can get removable one
I have a connective tissue disorder, and my teeth were fine so long as I was wearing the retainers all day but as soon as I switched to only at night they started to shift. Even though I put the retainers on every single night, even as it was cutting into my gums and making me bleed. Eventually, the braces couldn't be put on at all. My orthodontist kept yelling at me that he knew I hadn't been wearing them, but I was. Since then I have gotten diagnosed with EDS and I'm wondering if that's why my teeth moved back into crookedness so quickly. I'm considering doing it again but I don't know if there's anything that can be done to keep my teeth straight if my EDS is complicating things.
To be fair some people DO need one, if you have a gap, severe open bite, or severe lower crowding can all cause you to need one. But for most people it’s because we think you’re too lazy to wear your retainer 😅 SO WEAR IT OK! ❤

I didn’t even get an option. They just put it on my bottom teeth.
Same! I wanted a permanent and now I can never floss down there 😭😭😭
@@calebweldon2989 Did they bond it too close to the gums? If so then you may have to get it adjusted. Try floss threaders or if you can get your hands on a waterpik. Absolute godsend!

This the only guy in history that’s taking care of your teeth digitally! 🎉
I just commented lol. A water pick is def a life saver. It’s troll easier to floss with the trainer vs the braces.

I recommend getting a floss threader those will save you ton of headache. But you also got put in foot work to get in there

“No, no. Keep going . I don’t feel a thing” *snot everywhere +the armrests torn up* 😂😂
My orthodontist put one on me without asking and then refused to take it off.

I had to have one too, I was also FURIOUS
I did NOT have a choice😂 they were like "here now you have this for the rest of your life"
You should be wearing the removable ones regardless of whether you got a fixed retainer or not. The fixed retainer is only going to hold the teeth it’s touching, which isn’t all of your teeth. To prevent shifting, you should be wearing your clear plastic retainers!!
When my braces came off the assistent secretly told me not to get the permanent retainers cause they suck and i'm glad i listened to her😂
I was given a permanent and plastic one. I was super embarrassed because there were other chairs in the room and the other patients could see and hear her scolding me
Sounds like your orthodontist needs an attitude check.
The first orthodontist i went to was also terrible. But luckly they lied in letters to my dentist who went to court for me. I just realized from the comments, dentist putting permanent retainers without consent is a universal thing
This is my plan, wear the permanent retainer for a few years (at least one year) then switch to removable at night time.
I didn’t get an opinion until I had gum recession and had to go back in braces to try and fix it, when they tried to put them back in after the braces i was like: oh naw man. And now I have regular retainer😂😅
My boss got her permanent retainer for 26 years now. Never had an issue. When you put the on corectly it wont come off
The way they put the one on the picture is so wrong. You need to put a thin layer of composite on the WHOLE back of the tooth. Bot just a drop. If your orthodontist does it like the picture, they want it to break so they can make more money out of you.
So that's why they broke after three weeks..

My orthodontist actually complemented how much I wear my night retainer. The reason I have a permanent braces on my two front teeth and 75% of my lower teeth is because my teeth don't like being told what to do . I also am going to have them until I get my wisdom teeth removed so there is still hope!

If you don't lose things often and don't fidgit a lot and have trouble flossing still, a clear removable retainers are best (make sure you clean it when you brush your teeth)

Got all the downsides of "permanent" retainer you listed plus a tooth started leaning forward despite the (or because of) the retainer
It works your just not doing it right
@SaeedKhan-hi6oq I'm doing it how they told me too, it doesn't fit between my teeth though
Why would they put braces on an 11 year old lol too young
$7000, and not being told you'll need to do this for the rest of your life was pretty disappointing
I have a closed up gap and only had to get top braces (and a palate expander for a year). I got a bonded retainer and was asking about the cons because I remembered this video and the lady told me "oh well mine has lasted 15 years!!" and then told me when to pick my actual retainer up.
"youll get so used to it eventually that youll stop feeling it" yeah, about 4 years later, still waiting
Bad news but I still notice mine 20 years later😅 maybe you will have better luck.
@@MJ-hc3jp welp. thats certainly not promising
The day I got my braces off, they immediately put a bonded retainer on my bottom teeth and then made the mold of that for my clear retainer. I hated my teeth prior to braces, so you bet your ass I wore that retainer every damn night. My permanent retainer has lasted a solid decade so far with no sign of budging.
i didn’t get an option lol. they gave me a removable one which ended up cracking and they refused to replace it! now my teeth are shifting again
At this point in my life, I think I would just rather live with my crooked teeth. Unless they're causing other health issues, I just don't want to to bother with the cost and maintenance of braces, and having teeth pulled. I just seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.
When your dentist doesn’t know the difference between recession and resorption 🤦🏻♂️
That being said, a lot of truths here. Good video 👍🏼
Nice to see someone tell the truth about fixed retainers
I got my braces off today and about two weeks ago they recommended I get the permanent one and I ended up telling them no. They were very adamant about it and I just kept telling them I already barely floss, I hated the maintenance so I think it would be best for all of us if I got the removable ones. They made a face at me but eventually gave me what I wanted. They did the same thing to me when I told them I didn’t want a root canal on one of my molars and that I’d rather have them pull it out considering the same tooth on the other side was impacted by my wisdom teeth and had to be pulled out as well… some dentists are really jerks tbh 😭
To be honest they may have just wanted money. Depending on where you are root canals can cost up to 5k or more.
This short made me remember to put my removable braces on
I didn’t get an opinion! They just gave me both! 😂
Am I remembering to wear my retainers or not because I am so angry at myself for forgetting, and screwing my teeth back up
I also didn't get any option my orthodontist just fixed it but I will get them off soon 😊 it's fine you can get the removed hope this helped ❤
My dads cousins who works in a dental office was like "get a permanent retainer when your braces get off, most dentist dont recommend them but..." And i looked at my mom horrified. And my mom was like "shes responsible...enough" 😅
the first time my permanent retainer broke, I just got it removed cause I hated it so much and they haven't shifted :)
You're lucky. My teeth would've shifted back so quickly 😂
Yeah, they didn't tell me it wasn't _literally_ permanent... my new (at the time) dentist was SHOCKED to find I'd had them for *eleven years.*
I do not miss them.
i was given a permanent retainer by an orthodontist who only anchored it to two teeth at the ends. it snapped twice before i insisted on having it removed so i could go to college without worrying what i would do when it inevitably broke again. i now have a plastic retainer like i always should have. and yes, i wear it.
I got a permanent retainer and actually got used to it. But flossing was a major issue. It eventually broke, so I got a normal retainer, which I had to wear every night. It's much better, and I integrated wearing them into my routine, so I barely forget them.
The permanent retainer saved my teeth from falling out and I am very grateful about that
i love the permanent retainer. i have one on my bottom teeth but i have a removable one for the top. i haven't put the top one on in like a year! my front teeth have drifted a little, i wish they just gave me permanent for both
yeah i got them (i didn't have an option really) and i hate every second of it, i got cavities under them......but the thing with regular retainers - i forgot to wear them allllll the time that i had them so the permanent ones are better than nothing yknow
i often forget to brush my teeth regularly bc of depression and adhd so....
Cool to see the grinch became an orthodontist
sigh here i am with mine that just broke panicking because i dont wanna go to the dentist.
