Naming Acids Introduction

  • How do you name acids? We'll learn how to look at the chemical formula for an acid and then write its name. We will focus on both acids without oxygen and also acids that contain oxygen, which are sometimes called oxoacids. In order to name an acid, you need separate the H+ from the negative ion. Then you figure out the name of the negative ion, and use rules for acid compound naming. If the negative ion ends in ide, the acid is hydro -ic acid. If the negative ion ends in -ate, the acid is -ic acid. If the negative ion ends in -ite, the acid is -ous acid. It's also important to note that there are some exceptions: phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, sulfuric acid and sulfurous acid.

Dear people who bring up the hands,
There are lots of chem videos out there for people who don't like seeing hands that use khan academy style writing software but 90% of the time that method comes off as impersonal and almost robotic. Sure, nothing is in the way to block your view but what good is that if the information is too convoluted to understand or too dull to stay awake through!
What Tyler DeWitt does is simply brilliant; he grabs your attention and presents the information in such a practical and easy to follow way. Asking him to take away his hands is like asking him to take his soul out of the videos. (That's why that suggestion is so hurtful). His hands guide you and take you on an epic journey of understanding first semester chemistry (and beyond)(,:
    Thanks so much Tyler!!

What a great teacher he is. He is the reason why not everyone should become a teacher and only those who can actually teach. I remember suffering through many teachers who only saw it as a job and then experienced a biology teacher who was a teacher with all of her heart and explained everything SO well, step by step, and if you had a question, she always wanted you to ask. She made me go to med school after being a high school drop out. Due to her I learned to learn and to have fun studying something which I thought I would never ever be able to study.

But when you're just talking... to me they don't add anything; they just flop around like fish out of water. You give fine lectures. I don't think you need to talk with your hands. Did you want me to change them? To make them another way? Have you ever gone up to someone on the street and said "I really don't like your ugly outfit. That sucks because you'd be pretty otherwise." Your comment feels a bit like the digital equivalent. I don't know, comments like yours always frustrate me because there's literally nothing I can do to respond to them. I've already made the video and I always talk with my hands. That's who I am. So whether you mean it or not, your comment just feels like an intentional insult. It's like telling someone, "Your skirt is ugly. Just thought you should know."

My chem exam is today and I am still iffy on naming the acids with oxygen. This MAKES SENSE! I kept getting tripped up on balancing the charge to find out the name. Super helpful! I wish I watched this a week ago!

Thanks for the vid. Have midterm today and watching all your videos really help me understand chemistry. We have limited time at school to learn chemistry once a week and it was so hard to catch up....Good thing I found your videos and all your videos and explanation of each topic is amazing. Thanks again!
