  • It's been a couple of years since my last update on the H2EVair project. That's because this kind of effort does not come cheap - usually. But thanks to my bro Chris, Mount Everest Just became a molehill. Here is a serious leap ahead with the acquisition of a brand new Coda EV with a 100KW UQM AC traction drive system and all the accessories - just what I needed to re-invigorate this righteous dream! The UQM system goes for about $15K - and I got a complete vehicle with one in it - for a fraction of the cost. It's sad to see the Coda did not make it - but its not a mystery as to why. In the future, a car like this will be able to be built for the same price as its gasoline competition or less. Until then, we are here to bridge the gap with low cost, custom EV's that prove to the world you can have a 95% efficient EV system with no range anxiety and be at least carbon neutral if not better.
Thanks again Rick, for making these cars available to us and not allowing Coda corporate to make the same mistake GM did with the EV1. These cars belong out here with us the people, not in a crusher.
Immediate plan: get the Coda running before the end of the year and grab the $7500 tax incentive. This will make the car essentially free for me - on the books I may actually "make" some money from it. Once the vehicle is running and debugged, it will be time to transplant all the running gear into the Corvair and transform it into the "EVair". Then watch as I demonstrate to the world how to add the "H2" into the H2EVair formula.
If you share this dream and have the resources, donate here:

    Stay tuned.

Cool. You're obviously pumped. What ever happened to your original plan to use a small rotary motor to drive an AC generator?

    Nice!

Ah. It's diesel. That settles it. Best of luck with the conversion.

Well the original plan for this project has changed many times over the years as technology has changed. The rotary option has become less attractive simply due to availability and the fact that they are not as efficient as a diesel - and also that a diesel can run biodiesel with no mods. Not so easy with a rotary. The diesel is an intermediary solution, however. Obviously the Holy Grail of this project is the use of a PEM cell fed by home made hydrogen.

What ever happened with this project?

This project has been 7 years in the making and funded almost exclusively with my own personal funds. I have a very average income with very little wiggle room for these research ventures, so progress is measured in years rather than months. That being said almost everything I need to begin actual construction has been acquired. It is likely that a teardown of the Coda may begin this spring. In related news, I am working on a clone project based on the second vehicle you see in the video that is funded by a local cab company. That proposal just took shape this winter. So though progress has been slow I have a feeling once the final few yards of the race approaches a lot of things will fall into place very quickly.

That's great! Keep us all updated. I own a coda and am excited to see what you do with all the bits!

Keith R Oh cool. Well, how do you like it? Any feedback? My spare parts will go to the cab company for spares since these parts are hard to get now.
