- Following a destructive rainstorm that pummeled Southern California, a massive landslide is threatening a neighborhood in Rancho Palos Verdes. Residents are left dealing with the aftermath including major land shifts, gas leaks and red-tagged homes. The active landslide has damaged neighborhood roads on Dauntless Drive, leaving several homes unlivable as it continues expanding.
KTLA's Mary Beth McDade reports on Feb. 8, 2024.

KTLA 5 News - Keeping Southern Californians informed since 1947.
the people who live in that area are well aware of the risks.
since the '70s.
Getting this land to stop sliding is a lot like getting mud to stop being muddy.
I think Ice-9 would work.
The whole area of Rancho Palo Verdes estate and Rolling Hills estate are always shifting. There’s no way to stop the land movement. Most of the multimillion dollars houses will be pile of rubbish eventually. This is sad but it’s the reality.
Is it sad or just stupidity and want over not getting a spectacular view and making the smart decision/choice?
Hillside building was an accident waiting to happen. In 1980, we landed at SFO and drove south to Contra Costa county. My engineer husband kept looking up and saying, “I can’t believe those homes got permits! A torrential downpour over a couple of days will weaken the soil under those properties and gravity will take control”!
Your husband is a smart man. They need to make these people move and stop trying to sure up something that can’t be stopped, Mother Nature.
Yeah, like Pacifica.
Wow, he called it PV!! A true local.
Portuguese Zionist bend is more accurate
I thought the same. I grew up in Pedro!
Same here Ports o call is where i had my sailboat @@therealdealclass101
My home 🤗🤗

all you have to do is make a short trip to near by Point Ferman park and you can see that the area has a history of Landslides.
I'm guessing the average home price in RPV is the low-to-mid-seven figures. The good news is that most will have a closer view of the ocean soon.
Unfortunately during these difficult times Angelenos have no sympathy for anyone in Rancho Palos Verdes unfortunately they may have to move back into one of the rental properties
Nature! The great equalizer.
Sounds like a rich person's problem and new the risk when they decided to live their
This illustrates the consequence of 'building your house on sand"... "Residents are on edge"...literally.
How did geologist and engineers ever allow permits to build houses here.
$$$ palm grip.
No insurance anymore its time to buy a big van to stay in
This is only the beginning, even back in the 80s I was surprised at all of these idiotic homes on steep hills, just waiting to be washed or fall down. Such stupidity!
They wanted a taste of Italy. All those homes built in the hills, always look scary.
@@seriejohnson698 Some of those poles that hold them up are so feeble and way too tall. Homes don't belong there.
Looks like a job for hemp. The plant can grow roots six feet into the soil in one growing season. The cloth is natural, eventually bio-degradable but long lasting with great strength and mildew resistance for erosion control. The flowers will focus your attention to shifting land, calm and energize you.
The true blame goes to the county and city for ever allowing homes to be built on that land. Most home buyers are clueless about geology and trusted that the land was stable.
You live on the side of a hill. Land slides? Shocker.
This area is flat and the houses have been there 60+ years.
0:48...doesn't look flat to me@@Jeanne90275
I don’t think anybody would have ever guessed 40 years ago or 60 years ago that the entire area of Rancho Palos Verdes could slide into the ocean, but it looks to me like most of Rancho Palos Verdes is in danger of sliding into the ocean
I’d bet my money that numerous geologists and civil engineers have brought this up over the years. It’s called “doctor shopping” except the doctor part is county and city inspectors willing to issue permits for gratuitous donations to their kids college funds.
Really..did it not rain 60 years ago. Hill, downpours and a house on a hill…seems predictable.
You know, I baked a potato today. I couldn’t decide between butter or sour cream
@eleleven3694My thoughts exactly…while your at it, throw in a few chives and your choice of delectable cheese 🧀.
@eleleven3694 Yes, they make everything taste just a little better. 😊
Any small earthquake will liquify the RPV Hill instantly....not safe to live in RPV. Sell and move out ASAP.
Rich people problems 😊
LA County is getting excited because they love Red Tagging homes
Land slide again ?
Didn’t the rain stop yesterday ?
Well now they call me Muddy water I'm just restless man as the deep blue sea
Oh poor really rich people from PV. They may only have 3 mansions left. 😂
Portuguese Bend has had these problems for a very long time. It was never suitable for development.
Yikes, it's gonna be race to the bottom for these home sellers. Nobodies gonna take risks buying these homes.
Let's start a gofundme for the PV residents!!!
Thoughts and prayers are enough!
@lolalasziv1059 Jesus does have the power to fix the land slide. Hell, he can fix all human problems with a snap of his finger......yet everything remains the same.
Theres a cost living that close to a hillside
She didn't smile.
So tax payers are going to subsidize rich ppl living on a hill admist the greatest housing crisis in generations?
Palos Verdes is too big to fail!
@@neckarsulme 🤣
You need architects that have worked specifically in this type of weather.
They need to evacuate and prohibit houses being built in this area.
Люди еще злорадствуют и прикалываются по поводу климатических событий.
Для многих еще это шоу.
На самом деле это начало беды для человечества.
Well said! There are too many Americans that watch stupid news channels and do not believe in climate change, they are an absolute embarrassment to America. We are literally at the beginning of the end of the Homosapien species on the planet earth. 🌏
Do something about it
those homes are only worth the copper in the wires now...
Im glad im not them. I'll keep my middle class away from the mountains. 😅
looks like California needs to pass some common sense anti assault storm laws
A new channel island coming soon. Maybe they can seceed from calif.
Ask these people who insures their homes? Did you know? Homes in land silde areas, fire prone areas like Malibu are insired by the Federal Government because normal companies won't insure in those areas. You tax dollars are bailing out rich people again!!!
The Billionaires with Capital B living there are all insured.
We are living in biblical times. Book of Revelation. Pray.
Ha ha ha ha ha
What good is Rancho Palos Verdes geologist going to do at this time and moment I didn't collect the big paycheck for allowing and approve in construction on land un stable for Holmes
That whole area is trying to turn into a bay. The road by the beach is always moving and it's like a roller coaster. Trump's golf course mignt slide into the ocean. Fingers crossed
Wow! The petty cruelty of many of the people leaving comments is disappointing. These people should expect the same amount of sympathy when climate change comes to their neighborhood.
Ahh the rich ..: to have their worries 😅
F california
I’ll buy their land for cheap let it slide than build
Where is Charlie Harper's home?
Time to move to Fresno.
You know, I probably would feel sorry for California if it hadn't turned into a communist state! It used to be a great state to go see, but going to a local landfill you can see the same thing as California has
How the rich cry what did they expect
Envy, is a Stinky Cologne comrade.
