  • Following a destructive rainstorm that pummeled Southern California, a massive landslide is threatening a neighborhood in Rancho Palos Verdes. Residents are left dealing with the aftermath including major land shifts, gas leaks and red-tagged homes. The active landslide has damaged neighborhood roads on Dauntless Drive, leaving several homes unlivable as it continues expanding.
KTLA's Mary Beth McDade reports on Feb. 8, 2024.

The whole area of Rancho Palo Verdes estate and Rolling Hills estate are always shifting. There’s no way to stop the land movement. Most of the multimillion dollars houses will be pile of rubbish eventually. This is sad but it’s the reality.

Hillside building was an accident waiting to happen. In 1980, we landed at SFO and drove south to Contra Costa county. My engineer husband kept looking up and saying, “I can’t believe those homes got permits! A torrential downpour over a couple of days will weaken the soil under those properties and gravity will take control”!

Looks like a job for hemp. The plant can grow roots six feet into the soil in one growing season. The cloth is natural, eventually bio-degradable but long lasting with great strength and mildew resistance for erosion control. The flowers will focus your attention to shifting land, calm and energize you.

The true blame goes to the county and city for ever allowing homes to be built on that land. Most home buyers are clueless about geology and trusted that the land was stable.
