Nice one! đđ€đ
I record a lot of acoustic instruments in my music, and nothing has made my recordings sound better more than the LRC5 app. Iâve been using it for about a year now and I love it. Thanks Pete for the tip a while back!
Awesome! Yes, I wanted to focus on the stock apps to keep it simple in this one, but LRC5 is definitely the secret sauce of a lot of good iOS mixes.

Thanks so much Ben. Really means a lot to me my friend. Enjoy your creating and make sure you share a track or two with me in the future.
Pete Johns - Thanks Pete,
Hi All, using Peteâs brilliant advice on interfaces and recording techniques, I recorded some original songs (playing all guitars / bass and singing myself, although not much of a guitarist / singer). Pete is the GarageBand guru for understandable advice. Hereâs a sample of my original songs. Thanks again, Pete.

I knew and do most of those things except the first one. Thanks pete for always showing me something new and helpful. Now off to put my projects in 24 bit
Do it man! Wonât help recorded audio but will help the quality of your exports, even old projects.
Pete Johns from now on Iâll record with 24 bit on. Will that make the sound quality better than previous projects?
Sometimes. 16 bit is still pretty good. I hear the difference mostly in vocals and quiet acoustic guitar recordings.
Great content again, Pete!

Haha! My pleasure Al.
Very well done. Learnt a ton of tips I didn't know, especially the last few mins about the dynamic mic.
Glad to hear it my friend. Thanks for all your support. đ
Brilliant video, Pete. đđ» Do you recommend a garage band plugin that can help reduce breath sounds? My voice technique is terrible and my breaths are heavy. Reducing them manually in the edit is time consuming. Thanks!
Hey Dee. Always good to hear from you my friend. A combination of the noise gate from Nembrini and the plugin âBrusfriâ from Klevgrand is a good combination for iOS.
The GarageBand noise gate is only an on/off thing but the Nembrini plugin lets you dial in just a little reduction - this video will show you what I mean - czcams.com/video/mCxrYzkRKw4/video.html
Brusfri is a must have app and plugin for reducing noise in your audio - czcams.com/video/qo-uZGnulNo/video.html

Thanks for your great video!!! Just purchased iPad Pro and rode nt usb mic. Using karaoke backing tracks. Think this set up will get good vocal in GarageBand ? Thanks Sean
Yup. The NT USB is pretty hood from what Iâve heard.
Thank you so much Pete for the tipps and your video. They are very helpfull. How can i use a condenser mic wich need Phantom power and a dynamic mic simultan on my Behringer audio interface?
Hey there. So, if you have 2 XLR inputs, you can turn on phantom power and use both a dynamic and condenser. Dynamic mics donât need phantom power but will generally still work fine if phantom power is on. Just never use phantom power with a ribbon mic.
I watch at least 2 videos every day for this legend â€ïžđŻ
Nice one my friend! Great to have you on board
@@PeteJohnsMusic you are welcome man you really helped me alot â€ïž

Wow. Can you please try your scarlett audio interface on your pc using bias amp?
Hey there. I donât do much recording on PC or using BIAS Iâm afraid, but in the past have got good quality recordings using the guitar input on this interface.
Fantastic stuff, Pete. If you save files as 44.1k/24-bit, is that the right format if you want to submit to music distributors (like Distrokid) later on?
Yup, 100%. 24-bit, 44.1kHz is pretty much the standard these days
Great information, thank you so much. I am wondering which version you shared this from. I am using 10.4.5 and I do not see the settings option is mine too old?
Hey there. Yes, the older versions donât have these options sorry.
Thanks for the great info. When setting your input gain, is it better to do it on the interface itself and leave the slider in GarageBand alone? Or do you adjust some mix of both of them?
Hey there. Usually when you plug in an interface with its one input gain the slider in GarageBand is greyed out, so use the hardware input gain in those cases.
Pete Johns oh ok, thanks so much! Really new to the GarageBand program and your videos have been so incredibly helpful on jumping in to it! New EP sounds great too!
Hi, Pete. I have an iPad with the iOS 10.3.3 Version. Yours as I can see is a modern version and most probably thats why I dont have the 24bt option in advanced. That will impact tremendously in the quality of the sound even if I have a Focusrite interface? Your channel is great btw. Accurate!
Hello my friend. Yes, 24-but audio was added in GarageBand 2.2. 16-bit is still not bad quality (it is CD quality after all).
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks man. Appreciate it!
Hi @petejohnsmusic, just discovered your channel. Great videos and info! I have a question and maybe thereâs another video for this but, Iâve been trying to record dj style mixes using vinyl (technics SL-1200MK5âs a mixer (Pioneer DJM600) and a VOLT 2 into a Mac /GarageBand. My question is regarding the many different volume output levels that each record tends to have. Rather than trying adjust the output gain on the fly while recording, is there a setting I can use in GB to create a nice even input sound level while recording and then give it a nice volume boost once finished recording!? Thanks for any insight.
Hey there. So, I would recommend automation or limiting to help with this. I have a few videos covering this which Iâll link below.
Automation - czcams.com/video/l_dfJA0Sm_w/video.html
Limiting - czcams.com/video/mC0T13-ZFoE/video.html

Pete. Great content! Fast track ultra (m.audio) is compatible with ipad and garage band? Thank!
Hey there. The newer Fast Track audio interfaces are class compliant and compatible but older ones need drivers and are not. czcams.com/video/K95B2-KfMak/video.html
What you think about the sound of recording in the iRig HD vs the focusrite that you recommend?
I still think my Stienberg UR22c has better audio but the iRig Pro and HD are pretty solid and close to the same quality.
Hey Pete, not audio but video related. Have you ever tried hooking up your ipad pro and ipad air to an external monitor for larger DAW displays?
Hey there. I have just started testing this out with the new USB-C to Multi/AV adapter and it seems to work well.
Pete Johns are you planning to make a video for it?
How does one change settings such as sample rate and buffer size when using an interface with iOS? Are you stuck with whatever latency you get by default? Most interfaces have a control panel when used on Mac/pc and I canât find any info regarding this for iOS.
Yeah, thereâs no way in iOS to adjust any buffer or sample settings - but I must admit I havenât had significant issues with latency personally.
Hi Pete, how would you rate the virtual instruments that are bundled into GarageBand for iOS when compared to those in Logic Pro or other DAWs. Would you say theyâre professional grade (if such a thing exists). Thanks!
Hey there. Yes, they definitely punch above their weight. The piano, organ and many of the synth sounds a top notch. Strings, guitars and other instruments are pretty good are definitely usable in a mix.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thatâs good to know thanks! :)
Is it better to use a clean or extreme tuning mic?
Hey there. Definitely start out with clean or something like âRadio Readyâ.
Ok I have an older ipad. Gen 2 to be exact.
Is there a way I can use it to make better recordings while I'm live on Facebook or do I just need a totally different setup
So, you could use some USB devices with the 30 pin to USB adapter like this - czcams.com/video/LdVAG_LwjBw/video.html
Or use a device that uses the headphone jack like this. czcams.com/video/FBX-BmsMjms/video.html
Big fan here PETE!!!!!!

Pete Johns I wish I had a chance to watch this first before uploading a song in distrokid just few days ago. It was my first time uploading something using Garage Band as my DAW
All good. You have started and will be able to improve next time. Then rinse and repeat again. Your music creation is a long game.
Sure is Pete. Thanks for the inspiration.

can you also âsave to filesâ instead of âopen inâ???
âOpen inâ and then âsave to filesâ works best in my experience. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Hello Pete, I am using my IPhone with an audio interface connected perfectly. When I record my quality does not sound good and is very quiet even when Iâm singing at a normal sound. Do you have any idea why this may be?
A lot depends on the type of audio interface and microphone you are using. I would jump over to the GarageBand Users Facebook group and provide more information there to see if they have some tips.
Hey pete do you use logic remote with GarageBand..what is your opinion on this..?..I went to the App Store to download logic remote..but after I read the comment section I stopped right there
Iâve heard a lot of Mac users swear by it but I donât record in Mac so havenât had experience with it. Iâd ask over in the GarageBand Users Facebook group. studiolivetoday.com/gbu
Would that audio interface power the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO - 250 OHM LE DT 770 Pro 250 ohm Professional Studio Headphones
I would go for lower power headphones or consider a headphone amp.
hi pete may i know if i recorded saxophone should i save wave file high quality?anyway nice your video..piece from malaysia :}
Hi there. Yes whenever you can use uncompressed WAV files and not compressed audio, you should.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you so much pete..keep in touch :}
Hey Pete I have a somewhat unrelated to this video question for you. I have an iPad 4 and use it with my Yamaha p 80 digital piano and irig 2 midi interface in garage band. My question is there an app out there that will convert my midi files into sheet music? I have a larger computer windows/pro tools recording setup that does this but since it's to large for our new home right now it's stored away. Also does Yamaha have an app for the iPad?
Hey there. So, GarageBand doesnât have this feature but I believe there may be other DAWs that do? Hopefully someone can provide a suggestion. Maybe even ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook page? studiolivetoday.com/gbu
@@PeteJohnsMusicPete Johns I get the idea that the latest version of Garage band has this feature but since I can't upgrade to that os version that doesn't help and I don't want to get a new iPad at this point. I contacted Yamaha about an app for iPad that I could utilize my p 80 more than garage band lets me have yet to hear back. Thanks for the link Pete and this video was also helpful. One last thing as a musician one of the things I loved about Garage band was using it for compositions by tapping in all the parts on the touch screen. There were times when even though I had a fairly impressive home studio in my basement I would put more time into doing that on the iPad. The limitations were some what freeing and fun. Here's a link to a song I did using this method called 'Socks & Sandals' It's kinda of a novelty song which has never been my style but I like how this turned out. czcams.com/video/D9FXK1QM3_8/video.html
The problem that I'm facing is that the uncompressed output when transferred in an android phone .. the volume goes so low .. it's depressing đ .. the project sounds great on my ipad but the volume is reduced to almost 70 % on phone . plz help .. I also use positive grid mastering but the volume issue still persists
Thatâs very odd? If youâve used mastering and a limiter it should let you turn up the volume and get a nice âradio readyâ sound. czcams.com/video/yGTXvpePJOI/video.html
How come my vocals sound a bit thin and distorted when using my iPhone and I record with Focusrite?
Not sure sorry. Hard to diagnose from afar. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
Should I still choose the uncompressed option if Iâm uploading straight to iTunes?
Uncompressed is always the best quality audio. If youâre putting it in your iTunes library you might want to select high quality M4A so you can add album art and other meta data, as WAV doesnât support this.
DuperSuper Productions how do you upload to itunes?
Those mics work for iPhone??? How does that work? Iâm using the standard white ear phones
You can use pretty much any mic or audio interface that is class compliant. If it is USB youâll need a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter or USB-C adapter. studiolivetoday.com/gear
Hey Pete.. used a Behringer 202 and ran my bass into garage band, thru the "bass amps"... when I playback it sounds fantastic, but the recorded track has all this squealing hissing going on in the background, like radio/phone interference is all I can describe it as... any thoughts?
Thatâs an odd one? Iâm not familiar with the interface but maybe make sure itâs only picking up the input you want to record? Sometimes youâll need to pan the audio left or right and select channel 1 or 2.
@@PeteJohnsMusic After a little fartin' around with it I've got it to work.. I tried a different power source for the interface and that seemed to correct the issue.. so maybe it's a grounding issue? dunno..
is the irig bad quality compared to these interfaces?
The original iRig has quite a lot of noise and wonât get you really good quality sound. The IRig HD and Pro models are actually really good.
God Bless â€ïžđŻđđŻâ€ïž
Thanks!
Hi Pete, have u tried using the tascam ixz with a pc or a non iOS device ? I tried but no use ....
It really depends on the port that your PC or device uses. It needs to be once a TRRS socket with the same configuration of the input and outputs.

pete, i have this really low bass note when i sample audio, it might have to do with the fact i have 2-way headphones or it may be my room's accoustics, but i play the samples on my PC, then it goes through my headphones, then records on my ipad.

Any point to setting input to 24Bit if interface is 16bit?
It will still export at 24-bit so any samples or loops you use that are 24-bit will retain their bit depth. Most loops in the latest sound packs are 24-bit.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yeah but, if interface is only 16-bit, the depth is only 16...Am I missing something here?
If you use virtual instruments or samples or loops directly in GarageBand, so without using your audio interface, they will remain 24 bit when you export them.

24 bit is better. 8 bits better. Like 11 is one louder than 10 on a guitar amplifier.
WellâŠ. I meanâŠ. 24 bit actually genuine gives you more samples and more dynamic range. Someone should make a 25-bit interface however. đ
