I love this so much more than The Wizard and I, in this one Elpheba’s ambition and yearning stands on her own two feet, not chasing after the approval of a man who she thinks is more powerful than herself.
While this song does focus more on Elphaba's independent goals, I feel like The Wizard and I puts in perspective that she believes the Wizard is going to help her achieve all this - which is all the more earth-shattering to her, in the end. Also, Making Good sounds a lot more like book Elphaba - an amazingly interesting character, but, as SJB said herself, they had to make it lighter when KC came in. So I feel like, had they kept this song, the audience would have a harder time empathizing with Elphaba and flock to Glinda, and that would go against the whole point of this story. (but I do love this song. SJB sings like a goddess and Stephen writes lyrics so well- i mean, the rhymes can marry me)
I love this song, but i can see why they replaced it with wizard and i. I agree that Wizard And I tells more about Elphaba's life with the wizard, while in Making Good she says how her life is going to change. I also agree this song makes me think more of the Elphaba from the book
I like this more than Wizard and I. It shows her anger and what she wants to accomplish. I also like the bit about her father. This song sounds more unique and catchy. It shows how independent and mature she is since she is practically a caretaker of her sister. It also shows her revengeful side
Right!!! But it also shows Elphaba at her purest - wanting to do something positive. She wants to make a positive change. I think cutting this cut so much of her character development.
This song kinda puts me in mind of the book version of Elphaba more than the musical version. She seems a little more cynical in this than she does in "The Wizard and I"

but wizard and i puts emphasis on elphaba's relationship with the wizard starting from idol to nemesis, which is important for later songs - wonderful and the sentimental man reprise. making good is a lovely song, but had this song stayed, the wizard would've been a means to elphaba's own ends, which would kind of make her a bit self serving.
how so? its absolutely amazing and fits better than the wizard and i..esp when she says she is going to fly which totally foreshadows her flight at the end of act 1...this song focuses more on what she wants for herself...not just meeting the wizard...

I especially love the intro where she airs her grievances and then goes into what she wants to achieve. It really adds a lot to her character. Wonder if any part of this will be incorporated into the upcoming films.
