      Haha that was a classic

  • @dylanp2921
    @dylanp2921 Před 4 lety +94

    It was an unfortunate set of circumstances that came together to cause the controversy:
    1. The siren at the ground was not as loud as it should have been
    2. There was a strong wind blowing towards the location of the siren ie taking the sound away from the umpires
    3. The umpire closest to the action blew his whistle for a ball-up at the exact moment the siren sounded so he didn’t hear it
    4. The timekeepers thought the whistle for the ball-up was the whistle to acknowledge the end of the game - that’s why they didn’t continuously sound the siren as required by the rules; they were packing up their gear until a member of the public tapped on their window to let them know the game was still continuing, so they then sounded the siren a 2nd time, 25 seconds later
    All of which came together to create “sirengate”. In the end the right decision was made by the suits n briefs later in the week and the team in front when the siren sounded to end the game was given the points ie Fremantle.
    Somewhat forgotten in all of this was Fraser “Grrrrehrig” giving away THREE 50m penalties in a row to gift Freo a goal.
    Got a bit of history Freo and the Saints. Just ask Ross the Boss 😎

    As a St. Kilda supporter I was glad we didn't argue the point, Freo deserved the win.
    But I remember, that at the time, some of those in the legal profession, were saying St. Kilda could have taken it to court and won, given that the game isn't technically over until the umpire acknowledges the siren, which they didn't do.
    Would have been horrible for the game if this result was dragged through the courts.
    I think the AFL might have changed that rule now.
    Thanks, youtube algorithm for bringing me this years later.

      If it had of been dragged through the courts and Freo for whatever reason lost the game, it would have caused them to fall out of the top 4. You're right in what you said, Saints had a right to dispute it since technically it's up to the Umpires to signal the end of the game, if they didn't hear it, then how can they justify the game end? The official time keeper time is the countdown. TV gets the countdown from the official time keeper, because it makes it more fun to watch on TV. Players aren't meant to know how much time on/injury time there is so they get a normal clock as a rough indication. They use to be careful not to show the countdown at stadiums, but wouldn't surprise me if you can see the countdown at the stadium these days. The players have so many people telling them the time from the bench, runners and etc, that they know pretty accurately.
      The basic idea I can imagine was to stop players playing for time and slowing the game down because they could never be sure exactly when it will end.

    • @rod7139
      @rod7139 Před 5 lety +3

      The quarter or match ends immediately when a field umpire hears the siren, with the exception that a player is allowed to kick for goal after the siren from a mark or free kick which was paid before the siren.
      So it is not when he blows his whistle, it is when he hears it, therefore it is incumbent on the time keepers to keep blowing the siren until it is acknowledged. Now a days a direct feed is sent to the on field umpires to avoid this debacle again.

      What would you expect them to do? It's not their fault the umpires couldn't work it out. If an unfair free kick is payed, every player would still use it even if they know it isn't fair. Stop acting as if any other club wouldn't do the same thing.

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen Před 4 lety

      When you look at the rules, as far as the players are concerned, the game hasn't finished until the umpires blow the whistle and call time. What's happened here is that they assumed that the siren was the barometer, and that the umpires would make the call based on the siren (and that's a correct assumption). But as the umpires didn't hear it, the game is still going, so they technically should have still been playing. That's why they kept going.

    Technically St Kilda did win, even though the siren did go according to the rules the game isn’t over until the umpire signals it to be over and calls time. So the game could’ve kept going on for another 5 minutes if no one did notice.

    • @keykeyboard1
      @keykeyboard1 Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah, but the emergency umpire told the umpires the game was over, they continued anyway to try give st kilda the win, They even let the guy take another shot for goal for no reason to try give them a goal (instead of a draw) but eventually the afl made the correct decision by reversing it
