Hey wow congrats! Any tips for people still in high school?
One way is to find a subject you're interested in and do a ton of competitions in that subject. A lot of colleges say it's ok to come in undeclared, but honestly it's to your disadvantage because a lot of undeclared people have stuff like good GPA and test scores but have nothing that makes them stand out. For me I discovered my passion in computer science during 11th grade and spent a ton of time doing every CS competition I could find (USACO and MIT Battlecode mainly) and won a bunch of awards I could put on my applications. I genuinely enjoy compsci so that helped me a ton with finding motivation to keep training.

@@LawrenceChenAoPS well fuck me. i was USACO platinum and got rejected ED in 2017. Still, I ended up at a number 1 ranked CS school so I guess I'm fine. Congrats on ur achievement!

It's pretty easy to act like you're waking up when you're already really tired haha

If I got into CMU for stats/ml but I’m also interested in majoring in cs,
do you know how hard it would be to double major in terms of CMU letting me add the major/workload?
There’s an application process to obtain a double or dual major in CS. It’s fairly competitive, so I would recommend you to have a back-up.
However, a minor involves no application process. I believe you simply need to get a minimum of a C in certain CS classes.
There is A LOT more to college than thinking about additional majors and minors. I encourage you to try not to pigeonhole yourself into focusing on your degree.
I started off as a chem major and was able to do many things that led me to where I am now because of what I pursued outside of class.

Lovely! Congrats! Only thing I know about robotics is that the intro class is no joke. I believe on average it takes 20-25 hours of work a week outside of class. Best of luck. :)

idk, cmu's a good school. you're gonna have to work a lot if you want to learn a lot. i actually felt more stressed throughout high school than in college because i had more freedom to take control over my time

It's all self-management. You can take a seminar to help you stay on track though. There's help available here if you think it's needed.

I have received an admit just a few days back from CMU for dual degree MS in Materials Science and Engineering and Technology Ventures. Paying the tuition is the thing that's worrying me. I hope I'll find a way to fund my masters at CMU!!

So Stats/ML is in Dietrich right? If you're also doing CS as like a minor or something did you have to apply for that because they're in different colleges....I heard switching between colleges wasn't that easy at CMU
Stats/ML is in Dietrich. CS minor requires a quick application after you take around half of the required classes for the minor. Switching between colleges isn't that easy at CMU, but that hasn't stopped me and my friends from doing it!

Deciding between this and Cornell for math. CMU will accept much of my existing college credit to satisfy gen ed requirements, but Cornell won't. On the other hand, Cornell is offering me a research grant. Other reasons make the choice difficult. Your advice?
research grant isn't that much money imo. you're possibly more likely to graduate early at cmu than at cornell with those gen ed requirements waved. thus, save a semester's worth of tution.
also if you go to cmu chances are, i think you'll get a healthy bit of seduction from computer science along the way haha

Hey, I usually sleep 9 hours a night at school. I rarely get less than 7.5 hours of sleep. I actually just stayed up really late that night because I was excited to edit this video. Sorry about the confusion!

Hey Jason, I'm seriously considering a major in Stats/ML at CMU. Overall, how much of your course workload relates to Statistics and how much of it is similar to that of a CS Major? Can you take CS lots of CS courses as well? Anyways, thanks for creating this short vlog and PLEAAASE make more! I'm super interested!
Thanks for watching. :) For pure CS classes, you take up to data structures and a watered-down algorithms class for stats/ML. In my experience, CS classes take up A LOT more time than stats classes. You can take whatever classes you have the pre-reqs for. There's a lot more to college than taking classes though. :) TAing has been one of the best parts about my college experience.

As a CS major, an additional major or minor in ML is not uncommon. If you are accepting an offer from CMU with the intent to transfer into SCS, I would highly recommend you to consider if you would still want to attend CMU as a non-CS major because an additional or dual major in CS is highly competitive. However, if you have yet to apply, don't let thoughts like that stop you from working hard and accomplish more!

Yay! Glad it did that for you! CFA is top notch for Design and Art. AFAIK, most of the people in those majors go into a designer position in tech though!
