I went to Hanoi last year in May 2023 and too courage and excitement to explore the local traditional market. It was a great decision. I tried some delicious local food! I hope I can go back to Hanoi.

As "unusual" food eaters ourselves, we salute you for stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying all of these new things! I've seen that sandworm pancake on other videos, but never came across it in person. We will have to try! Hahaha. Your egg reaction. We had balut when we were in Cambodia. We didn't mind it at all. As you said, the "broth" in the egg tasted like chicken soup, and the rest like egg. That bun cha place was the first bun cha we ever had! It's good, but we had a street side spot that we preferred. Man, I miss Vietnamese food!

Bun cha is so good! And honestly, so is cha ruoi. That was my second time having it and it didn’t bother me! I’m glad at least someone things I did it well, and that’s a good way to remember it too!
I think the cha ruoi (sandworms) is more a mental block than anything else. From what I can see, it looks like an herby omelets, which most people can do.

40:28 an easy way to pronounce this word is to think of the saying, “hang on” and just take off the ha in the beginning. We have that sound in English, it’s just not found at the beginning of words like in Vietnamese
17:10 I did hope you had liked the blood sausage. Vietnamese chiefs know how to clean and cook pig's intestine, especially in Hanoi. But indeed, pig's intestine can be dangerous to eat without proper cleaning with salt clean water and proper boiling.
It did seem quite clean. I didn’t get sick, so that’s good! But it was a strange texture. 😅 If I had some fish sauce, it would have been no problems. 👌

Tip for crossing street in Vietnam: Many tourist foreigners scared of traffic in VN . Don’t worry about it! The rule to win this fear is keep routin slowly walking when you across the streams of motobike! -motobykers knows how to avoid you themself in chaos-order! remmember do not run and stop suddently , accident immidiatly ! Don’t be affraid off and do it if you want to be safety in the crazy- rule traffic in Vietnam.
BTW, regarding the ng sound. Think of the word fillet mignon...it's similar to the gn in mignon. Or think of words that end in ing like sing, king, ring, etc.

Chả quế is always grilled that make its color different from normal fried chả. It has 2 layers, the first is pork( without fat) and cinnamon, the second is pork( with fat but not cinnamon) that is why you find chả quế is less fatty than normal chả
She seems like a nice girl, but I wish she'd have pivoted when she found out you already had banh cuon there (and also the sandworms and the ban ran...saving grace is if it's actually better than what you tried last time). Either go to another banh cuon place or some other food instead...and she should have given more chili when you asked for it. But I did like how she demo'ed how to eat it properly. That blood sausage is sketchy as heck since it's right there next to the raw meat. I don't eat the blood cakes and such, but I LOVE the blood sausage. I wouldn't necessarily eat it like that, but in chao (congee), it's also often served with bun dau mam tom (which you should try...but maybe stick with nuoc mam instead of the fermented shrimp paste initially). I'd rather the tour guides introduce the quail eggs in tamarind sauce first, then go hardcore on the duck egg. The bun cha place was weird...it's build almost Japanese style, but very inconvenient because they'd have to step up to deliver the food to the customers? It also seems lacking in meat compared to other places...and it was missing the crab filled egg rolls. I did like the banh mi because it sounded different and unique and the dessert looks great (not adventurous, though).

Yea, I do agree to an extent. While I was happy that I got to true banh cuon with egg, I wish we’d been able to go to another location. I believe filming around Tet made that a challenge though, so I’m happy they could accept us at all! The sausage in congee would have definitely helped… I mean, any sauce would have helped haha. The egg was fine, I’m glad I got to try it. Though quail eggs would have maybe been easier! The bun cha was very tasty, but not quite as stacked as others we’ve had now. In one of our next videos, we go to our favorite bun cha place! The ice cream was perfect… though, I think only the three items were supposed to be adventurous, not all of them! ☺️

So you didn’t know you signed up for an adventurous food tour? Was it a mistake on your part the guide’s? She should have taken you for the jellyfish like the guide “Flora and Note” got. They had told their guide to take them to places local Viets enjoy…so that kind of leaves it wide open for interpretation. Hahaha! It did make for an interesting video, though.

Ok! Sign language has always been something we’ve intended to learn. We know a few signs, but could definitely learn more. I imagine it’s different in Vietnam than ASL though.

Also, when you see the letters tr or ch in Vietnamese, just make a j sound. It would sound more authentic than trying to make the tr or ch sound from an English speaker. Remember that the t and th sounds are swapped from their English counterparts.

Also, when you see the letters tr or ch in Vietnamese, just make a j sound. It would sound more authentic than trying to make the tr or ch sound from an English speaker. Remember that the t and th sounds are swapped from their English counterparts.
Oh! Ok, interesting. I always heard tr as ch, and ch as inbetween that and j, but this is also really helpful. Thanks! Next time, my pronunciation will be even better! 🙏
@@mikeandashley I'm Vietnamese, but I did spend my younger years in Laos, so maybe I cannot distinguish the tr and ch sounds like a proper Viet person. I've always said it with a j sound for both and that's what I hear others saying (but I may have just become tone deaf to it all).
