I celebrate both Halloween and Day of the Dead. But I hate people thinking Halloween is just a kid's holiday. I just celebrate it for trying out different costumes and stuffing my fat ass with sweets.
Dia de Los Muertos feels more positive, happy, and less spooky. A very elaborate wake and that's ok. Regular funerals bore me if I don't know the person or are just depressing.
Bowl: "FC, the women are pissing me off again."

~Bowl
An appropriately funny argument for this time of year. I like both, but I feel like it's a bit bold to say Dia de los Muertos hasn't been at least a little commercialized when I can find products for it in the whitest part of America. Also, while the thunderstorm was a neat touch, it felt a bit loud for my tastes, overall the video was great as usual though.
As an American, the quality and actual horror on Halloween depends on where you live. Where I live, it’s mostly just those stereotypical inflatable decorations and hanging spiders. However, if you go down south, people take Halloween really seriously, creating some genuinely unsettling stuff.
In terms of the videos topic, I’ve heard of Dia de Muertos, but never bothered to research it since I thought it was “Mexican Halloween.” However, after watching this, my interest has certainly been piqued.
This was an overall a pretty fun debate between the two cultures.
Honestly surprisingly sweet to see Bowl genuinely passionate about Halloween, and his rant near the start about following Celtic tradition.
I enjoyed this new french vs british topic involved separately in this video. Really cracked me up 😂

Now, some point’s i´ll like to add.
Despite catholicism taking a great hand on disceminating today’s Día de los Muertos to most of México, they couldn’t do sh¡t to change it.
The only changes made to it were the addition of candles, paper, dough (later used, by regional people, to make the pan de muerto), fireworks (used a lot. Like. A lot.); and some other minor nuisances that would have changed over time anyways (material and animal sacrifice and things of the sort).
In my opinion these additions aren’t butchering since neither the meaning nor the tradition changed.
The only other change would be the addition of God (Santa Maria y Jesus) to the ofrenda. And, even though this worked out, depends on how catholic the family in question is to add these photos and iconography.
Dia de los Muertos, remains nearly unchanged on some parts of México (Patzcuaro, and mid-México).
Now, about Halloween.
Disclaimer, I have not even the slightest idea of how accurate “Bowl´s Halloween” might be towards its original Celtic form, nor this Celtic tradition.
The original tradition has been butchered beyond recognition.
It does have origins in both German and Celtic roots, being it an amalgamation made by Christianism, first, respecting the original Bad spirits wreaking havoc, later replaced them by demons that looked like monsters instead of evil and naughty peoples souls.
Halloween did have a traditional cake, yet it remains forgotten everywhere; showing that commercialization rocks hard even since the late 1800´s when the integration of sugar as a staple of the event and the production of former candy started.
Costumes, were changing over the centuries, first (as Bowel says) people dressing as dead people. Then, after Christianity took hand, this became “dress as your favorite Saint” (from where the name “all Saints Eve” comes from) and demons asking for pastries (where the cake, later the candy comes from).
What can we gather from this, chistianity fvcked us all.
I just finished the video.
No, Dia de muertos is not a glorified funeral, Most of it is a respectful remembrance of the dead, and even people you didn't knew.
And, on top of that, it's respectful to Dead (la parca) itself, since we make calaveritas (songs and poems) to mock on it, or make allucion to how ingenious it is at taking the life of people.
And even then, we never take it lightheaded.
Dia de muertos es para burlase de la muerte, y recordar su inminente llegada. Nadie le escapara y por ende no tenemos razón de temer. al final estaremos todos juntos. ( P: L.P.S. ).
I'd be happy if FC reads or hearts this. It took me a while to go back and resume my notes.
The editing is amazing, props to the man
Ah, to be a Latino in the USA with a birthday the immediate day before Halloween. I'm pretty sure the only reason Día de los Muertos hasn't been commercialized the way Halloween has is because people here seem to see it as "Mexican Halloween", and while I appreciate the unintentional preservation of the holiday, I'm rather miffed that such confusion is still a thing :l On the very surface, they do look similar: skeletons, costumes, festivity. That falls apart when you start paying attention though; Halloween is -slutty- scary, what with the whole "dress up to not get confused for a dead person" and "offer candy so this monster doesn't friggin' eat you" vibe, aided by the darker colors with scary, sometimes visceral decor. Día de los Muertos, by contrast, has warm and inviting decor, bright colors all around, only features lively calaveras, and is a celebration of the life that the departed enjoyed with us. They're completely different festivities in the end, despite sharing a vaguely similar surface (and being right next to each other on the calendar), and I love them both for what they are. A bit more modesty during the former wouldn't hurt tho imo
And now for the background information on my own relationship with the festivities that no one asked for :D Neither of my parents sets up an ofrenda for their departed, but they do recognize the day and my grandmother does set one up (specifically to her parents, my great-grandparents), plus the middle and high schools I went to place greater focus on Día de los Muertos than Halloween, papel picado and all. On the personal side of things, my own birthday being right before spooky month's zenith means that it's always been celebrated with a Halloween theme, and after her birth my youngest sister's birthday as well (her's is on the 18th, though celebrated the same day as mine) I've grown to be rather fond of the holiday and the autumn season as a result of this :D
Did you know that Disney tried to buy "Dia De Los Muertos" to sponsor their Coco's license ?
That's horrible how a company can pretend to buy "Traditions & Cultural events".
@@Esturgeon420 yeah, that's Disney for ya
You and your sister sharing your birthdays' celebration as the beginning of the October (and November) holidays must be amazing! I feel like in American culture there's a cliché sense of "urrrgh my birthday is RIGHT NEXT to ..." or "oh come on, I have to SHARE my birthday with my annoyinh popular cousin's????" - And I kind of doubt that cliché is actually true very often, but all the same, it's really nice to hear about your family so clearly feeling just about the opposite way. It sounds lovely!
@@quasar.nebula mmm hmm, I never really minded that my birthday was so close to a holiday. I think the moment I started really liking the fact was on my 7th one, which was celebrated on the actual day itself because it fell on a Saturday, which in my family is the ideal celebratory day of the week (as weekdays apart from Friday aren't good for 'em, and Sunday precedes Monday aka. the day everyone goes back to work/school). Anyways, I vaguely remember going out to trick-or-treat after the party, which itself had produced a lot of happiness in me because it happened in a park full of giant trees (I should mention I lived in a place very unlike my desert roots at the time), and the end result was a day so joyous that I still feel the effects even though the exact details of it are gone by now lmao.
As for my sister, our celebrating on the same day is more out of a sense of efficiency, so that we only set up for one birthday during the month instead of two (cause parties are quite costly :D). Though if she were born, say, a week earlier then we probably would have two. Strictly speaking, the way we have it now marks two days where she gets to dress up and have fun, so I don't really mind the arrangement :)
You have it backwards. The idea was to dress up as the dead or other types of creatures to confuse the actual spirits/fair folk/whatever wandering the mortal world on that night into thinking you were one of them so they wouldn't spirit you away, and the treats were meant as offerings (basically bribes) so they wouldn't pull pranks or otherwise bring misfortune down upon you. The original Jack-o'-lanterns were carved from Turnips and were used as protective talismans to ward away such creatures.
Esto se va a poner bueno XD

Well I’m sure the spirits from beyond the grave are laughing about this hilarious video. As a kid Halloween seems fun, but as an adult Dia De Los Muertos is much more meaningful to commemorate the dead, I have to agree Mafalda. It’s not only a celebration of death but also a celebration of life as well. While we miss our dearly departed loved ones every day, a day to celebrate the dead of our loved ones makes us appreciate life much more that we are still going on, and it’s a spiritual reunion. Dia de Los Muertos is reserved for Mexico, and a very beautiful tradition of the Catholic holidays before the coming of Christmas, but I think a commentating of the dead more cultures should adopt. We do have this thing to fear death and we treat it as a taboo, like saying “he who must not be named” instead of Lord Voldemort. Death is scary to think about but it’s not THAT scary

...That's clearly an "am" right there. It's not a misunderstanding on the reciever's end if the message is just conveying a meaning alternate to its intent, the sentence is very much made in present tense, so people are gonna naturally process the information as it's been delivered. The fact is, the sentence is grammarly incorrect, so of course people are gonna get the wrong idea, as the sentence itself is wrong. Clearly if this is anyone's mistake, it is not the audience's, but *F**k* Cares'.
"Dia de los muertos is just a glorified funeral"
I mean, you're TECHNICALLY not wrong, but still not right 🗿 at funerals everyone is floored and grieving the recent loss of a loved one. In Dia de Muertos, we are happy to remember those who passed and the joy the brought us when they were alive, by making their favorite food among other customs of the day.🗿👌
I haven't celebrated Halloween but I'd dress up and get some free candy, although I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it if it was banned or anything.

Mafalda MVP! She was eloquent and convincing, and further she handled Bowl's provocations with grace! If she shows up again in a future video, it'll be a treat better than any Halloween candy.
A night of chaos, fear, et cetera is much more fun. The obvious solution to the candy problem is alcohol. My personal method is to make a kind of tiramisu cocktail with espresso, vodka, and chocolate, topped with a marscapone cream whipped to soft peaks. It is delicious. It is sweet, suitable for the chaos and lovely, brief appreciation for impending death, and in line with British heritage as it involves getting incredibly drunk, and tiramisu is delicious.
Lastly, it is the one day a year where I can wear my cape, tailcoat, top hat, and jabot in peace without getting constant grief. It is obviously perfect for that reason.

Even if Día de Muertos is a glorified funeral, so are actually funerals. My mother made an offhand comment once that her father in law was already talking about what mariachi band he'd have at his funeral, and nothing is more Mexican than that tbh.
We don't mourn the deaths of loved ones, because we know we get to see them yearly, if not in person, but in spirit.
One of the Traditional French "Halloween" story is about death visiting graveyards and playing his fiddle for the night while the dead rises up and dances until dawn. Pretty close to Dia de Muertos when you think about it.

Oooo, that is a hot take, my fellow sentient creature. As an American, I don't know how it is for the several European cultures, but it just seems like people just want to celebrate Christmas earlier and earlier. It is literally supposed to be the spooky month and we have stores selling Santa Claus like he will disappear by December. A few years ago, I thought Halloween over here would shield the rest of the year, but *noooooo.* Apparently we have to have Saint Nick breaking down our doors before the first snow could even drop. Unless you live in Alaska. Pretty sure they have snow 24/7.
