What should we allow in Sports? - Trans Athletes, PEDs, and ethics.

  • Hans Neimann was accused of cheating recently in a rather... colorful way.
Whether he did it or not will probably stay a mystery, but the conversation led to a broader argument. As our world evolves, so do our sports and their ethics. Eventually, a question arises: Should we allow trans athletes -More specifically, male-to-female ones- to compete against women? What about PEDs? Are they cheats, or a necessity?

As for why to actively pour cereal first? You can always guarantee that you have the perfect amount of milk for any given amount of cereal, and also guarantee that the bowl is never filled too much just because you were pouring enough cereal to match the respective amount of milk already in it. Of course, this reasoning falls apart if you simply gain enough experience with the milk first method to know the proper amounts off the top of your head, but once you start using a different kind of bowl you're likely back to square one, so cereal first wins because of its versatility. As another bonus, no matter the density of the cereal, pouring the milk afterwards will guarantee that all the cereal becomes wet before you attempt to eat it, as opposed to cereal sometimes floating on top of the milk and the top layer consequentially staying dry.

Yes, but I believe that most people who engage in competitive activities (other than professionals and people obsessed with winning) will tell you that their main goal is to either improve themselves through competition, or to enjoy the competition itself. Victory is just another proof that their efforts have paid off, and even that doesn't matter when there's a massive difference in ability between the competitors. Even a match that ends in a tie can be very rewarding to play, if the opponents have at least _some_ respect for each other.
Some people only care about improving and/or testing one ability in particular. For instance, a boxer won't care about being good at kicking as much as an MMA fighter, or about being heavy as much as a sumo wrestler. Giving them an environment where they can practice punching and dodging without having to worry about having inferior kicks and body weight is only going to help them enjoy what they love more. This applies to physical characteristics as well - I'm sure there are many people out there who would enjoy their hobbies/jobs so much more if they didn't have to worry about disadvantages they can do nothing about, or they simply aren't interested in eliminating for whatever reason.
In other words, that ideal fairness where every match ends in a tie is something to be strived for, as it helps different people enjoy different things without taking away from those who don't excel at everything. It's not like it can be actually achieved, so winners and losers are always going to exist - only, they're going to be determined more by their own effort than by external factors.

Honestly my whole take in the trans athletes thing is that it brings to light how silly it is to make most sports purely separate for males and females. IMO sports should be put into categories entirely devised of weight/muscle, not gender.
I mean a regular 5’6 woman isn’t beating a bloke 6’5 tall, crafted by the gods for running but neither are most blokes either, yet because they’re male, they’re put against a man who is clearly way out of their league because for some odd reason, gender is used as the biggest deciding factor.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to take everyone, men, women, trans, etc and file them into specific classes based on a combination entirely of weight, muscle, height and more so sports goes from “who is genetically superior” to “who is simply better trained and worthy of winning”?
In my eyes, that feels to be not only the fairest decision for everyone but also conveys what I believe to be the true spirit of competitive sports, much better than simply dividing it all by gender and saying “you’ll only succeed if you’re genetically built for it”

I (mtf, 24) for a while thought that since I was born male I was naturally stronger than cis women, until I had been on HRT for a year and a half and tried arm wrestling with a cis female coworker. She DECIMATED me. We were the same height and about the same build but she absolutely clobbered me, three times in a row. I have always been weaker than everyone else; in high school I thought women were naturally better swimmers since they kept beating me at swim tournaments. (I think I was always put up to swim against girls since the guys were so much bigger and stronger than me). So, moral of the story? Not every trans woman is built like the hulk, most of us are scrawny weak nerds who are just genetically weaker.
Also side note about bladders: Most trans women are on spirolactone to reduce their testosterone levels to low female levels, and this drug has a side effect of making you have to pee a lot. • @Seraserastria
    @Seraserastria Před rokem +7

Well I know this doesn't matter but my little autism brain wants to correct the superhero arguments, so here we go, get ready cuz it's a long one:
What makes Captain America a great role model isn't what he can do physically. Captain America is a good role-model because he is a good person even without his powers. In the 'First Avenger' movie, they show that the reason he was decided to become Captain America is because he is good and selfless. He jumped on what he thought was a grenade to save everyone else without a second thought, before he got his superpowers. The climax of that movie has him crashing the plane he was in (armed with missiles that were about to be shot out) into the arctic so he would save millions of people. He didn't need those powers to do the right thing in that situation.
Now Spider-Man, the Spermacist complained that Spider-Man does not use his powers to fight back against bullies which taught him to do the same. The Spermacist has missed the point. He doesn't fight back against the bullies because if he were to do so, it would expose his powers and both him and his loved ones would be easy target for Spider-Man's villains. I highly doubt the Spermacist would be targeted by super-criminals if he were to fight back against his bullies.
I don't know what he's talking about when it comes to Spider-Man creating villains. The only major Spider-Man villains I can think of who wouldn't be the way they are without him are Kraven the Hunter & Scorpion. Even in the movies, Harry Osborne is the only villain who turned to villainy thanks to Spider-Man. The villains who target Spider-Man specifically are often only targeting Spider-Man because he beat them during their first encounter. It's not Spidey's fault that villains are sore losers after he stops them from killing innocent people.
The "kill the villains" argument is one that a lot of people bring up, and I don't get it. Most (well-written) heroes who have this no killing rule have actual reasons as to why they do not, and while they might be flawed, the story will show the flaws (if it is well-written). Spider-Man experienced the loss of Uncle Ben, and has vowed to not kill anyone because he knows the pain of losing someone like that. Is that a realistic outlook? Not really, especially with people like the Green Goblin. But Spider-Man is a teenager, and as a teenager is shown to make mistakes often. There are consequences to this choice, and the stories never pretend otherwise.
And Batman. Don't get me started, I despise this argument. He doesn't kill people because the one thing he believes more than anything else is that reformation is possible. That these villains can become better people if given the chance. Society has failed them, just as it failed him when he was a child. Which is why in addition to being Batman, he uses his various companies to finance projects to improve quality of life in the city. Why he employs homeless and other mentally ill people, who have no other way of surviving in this city. It is why he sends specific villains to Arkham, a psychiatric facility, rather than a prison. And this has been proven to work. Riddler, Harley Quinn, Clayface, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze & Two-Face are only some of the villains that have become good at one point or another.
Not to mention the fear he has that he will go too far himself. Batman himself has admitted that he is mentally ill, and he is fearful that he could become as awful as the villains he fights. Not like the Joker obviously, but what about Lockup? A prison guard who took things too far at Arkham once the patients weren't listening to him, he became a dictator and created an abusive environment that he believes is actually helpful. Batman fears that he could become as harsh and cold as that, he already has trouble self-evaluating when it comes to personal relationships, how much further could it go? Aside from his moral reasons, he restrains himself because he doesn't want to become worse than the thing he is stopping.
To people who want to be like Spider-Man and Batman, they are fundamentally missing the point. These are flawed, traumatized and possibly mentally ill characters. They are not perfect, their core as a character is the fact that they struggle with being themselves. If you want a perfect superhero to look up to, Captain America and Superman are better choices. Both of them know who they are, and know how far they can push themselves. They both try not to kill, but do so when absolutely necessary. And while yes, they do struggle with their place in this world from time to time, that is overall a minor part of their characters.
I want to emphasize that Spider-Man and Batman are NOT perfectly moral. That is the point. But other heroes are moral. Although, I will admit that certain writers and most of the marketing make it seem as thought they are the peak of society. And while I can certainly say what I believe to be the true intent behind these characters, others can do the same for stories I despise. But honestly, that just makes the whole argument stupid. Nobody can be correct because nobody can agree on the correct interpretation, and there's so much content that it's not as easy as reading a single book and drawing conclusions from there. So while my point is not definitive, nobody else's point is either.

Of course Carlsen did not make any explicit accusations (a smart move, in my opinion, since it means Neimann's lawsuit is pretty weak) but the information is out there and he has refused to play against Neimann and so have many other players, which will make it harder for Neimann to enter high stakes tournaments.

Regardless, the problem with Batman and the justice system in this problem isn’t their unwillingness to kill the Joker, it’s their unwillingness to look for new more secure ways to store him. If you’re still sending the Joker to Arkham after he has broken out 3 times. That’s the point where you ship him off to some top secret location on the other side of the country where none of his worshippers will ever find him and where he’ll be held in a solitary cell.

The neurodivergence is showing itself all over the place in this one. Love it.
On the subject of trans athletes: to me, the problem has nothing to do with trans athletes and everything to do with categorizing by sex. The differences between male and female bodies do absolutely exist, but are far from a true dichotomy, with exceptions and unique cases aplenty. For example, as a trans woman myself, I’m substantially weaker than my younger, cis sister, and I’m not even on t-blockers yet, which will diminish my muscle mass even further. Broad, tall, strong women exist everywhere, as do skinny, tiny men. As such, organizing sports based on gender OR sex is a ridiculous concept that’s ultimately rooted in misogyny and gender stereotypes; sports were ONLY for men for quite some time, after all.
To say any more on the matter would require a level of expertise in the mechanisms of the human body that I simply lack. However, with how modern science and medicine is, I’m sure a team of experts would have little problem creating an altogether new system of athletic categorization. Preferably with more than two categories, as doing so runs the risk of turning into a cheap, disingenuous recreation of the male/female categorization. I think four would be appropriate, since it matches the vocal categorization system used by choirs that is often but not always determined by sex. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and a discussion in the replies would be welcomed.

I felt Caffina's pain when Spermist talked about Marvel... But I do love how consistent Harry was about the facts and honesty needed for the Olympics. Also that dude got real weird as it went along... thank fuck Harry saved the conversation near the end with food. Love your videos, they remain as informative diegetic conversations had between people. I'm surprised to say I ended up agreeing with Harry so much this time, usually I'd disagree with his conclusions about things but here, he's about as on point as he is with his cooked meals.
Reminds me of Speedrunners and their categories of any% vs any% glitchless. Both require good skill and knowledge to properly execute to get the best times. Some games require good RNG others strong timing with a bit of luck and a good finger. Runs done with a TAS which would be cheating in either of these categories, have their own leaderboard for runners to implement tricks one could only do with the tool, but others that humans with enough training can implement in the any% category (with some exceptions to 100% where it may not be worth it).

I would argue on the bit of non-killing superheroes actually being a threat rather than helping their worlds to talk about a wider issue about "is it bad not to exterminate evil/supervillains?"
I agree aith the bit the status quo has to remain, otherwise if Spiderman was to kill a villain every issue or two, they would have to constantly create new ones to pit him against. However now that mutilverses have happened (and stakes were pretty much rendered non existing imo) we see that even if Spiderman or whatever was to wipe out his world they would still turn out fine, so it looks like the writers found wiggle way to get away with it.
But is it really true that evil has to be eradicated by killing its heralds, just like in J.R.R. Tolkien's Arda?
I mean, I would say it depends on the context. Villains like Sauron or Morgoth embody pure, unadultered evil. There are no redeeming qualities about it. They are the personification of everything wicked in the entire world, there is no saving them and they can only corrupt others to be as bad as them by serving them. And that is a great way of writing, since there is a clear white and black contrast about good and evil.
However in the real world, things are different. Beccaria's "On Crimes and Punishments" believe that sentencing to death a criminal only incentivises criminal behaviour on others, since the drawback of committing even the most evil crime will be dealt swiftly and relatively painlessly. What is, in fact, a final moment of pain before an entire life one could be indulging on crime?
That is why in most countries and it is a widespread belief, sentencing jail time, and causing the inmate to waste time thinking about their crime and reinsert themselves into society is a far better punishment.
Most fiction depicts villains not just as unchangeable, irredeemable forces, and that causes us to see the world in many shades of grey. Villains can be persuaded to help and turn a new leaf, heroes can do the opposite. In a grey-world, if the hero of the story were to chop away at every person that is evil without giving them a second chance, just because they -could- be doing evil again, would they be a hero slowly becoming a villain by trying to push an ideal inapplicable to reality?
What about if the hero would get to know a person in the future *may* become a villain? Would they be forced to act in the most brutal of manners least blood of innocents would be on their hand?
I stand my ground and say there is a place and a time for pacifist heroes. Pacifism does not mean standing idle and letting injustice happen, is to intervene and give a chance for both sides to mend with the other through time once a punishment is administered to fair measure, rather than divide those furtherly.
And that's all. Here I am arguing with myself over a line on a video that may have been sarcastic.
In that case imagine a giant noisy plane labeled "the point" flying above me.

it isnt often but it was a relief when Harry was speaking this episode. i was losing braincells everytime the spermacist opened his mouth. if i didnt know better id swear this was some kind of overdrawn bit. also, it isn't often, but i pretty much completely agree with Harry on this one. as long as someone monitors it, PEDs in sports used legally and ethically could probably help a lot in the general medical field.

I'm more curious about the grey area in terms of using Adderal for competitors who may legitimately need it, such as people with ADD and ADHD. Would it still be considered cheating if they're given medical reasons for their usage? Of course, one issue that comes to mind is how easy it is to fake ADD and ADHD as the symptoms can overlap with many other conditions. As someone who has their struggles with ADHD sometimes it can be difficult to find the discipline to do everyday tasks like wash the dishes, etc. So I can't imagine someone with ADHD in a chess tournament without their medicine having much success.
