Or one could say, if one does want to make a comparison with English, it should be at the _end_ , as a comment on the result: as a result of using the proper configuration of mouth parts, one should get a sound that is similar to English j, ch, and sh, but that is sweeter, brighter, and more sparkling.

Whether Chinese language has "root word" concept, to frame new words from root word, prefix and suffix?
There is root word concept, in English.
    eg
    re + build = rebuild
    It means, "build again".
    psych + iatry = psychiatry
It means, "Medical study of mind (psych)"
    psych + o + logy = psychology
It means, "Study of mind (psych)"

It's interesting that in pinyin, the letters j, q, x can only be followed by the letter i. Or the letter u. (Never by any other letter.) When followed by the letter u, it is always pronounced as ü, but the dots are omitted. I don't know why it's done this way. Some people say it's so that we can save a bit of ink when printing them out. :-)

    • @EverydayChinese
      @EverydayChinese  Před 4 lety +1

j q x cannot be put before "u" to make syllables, but they can be put before "ü". When j q x are used before "ü", we don't write the two dots of "ü", for simplification, we write "u" instead.

When pronouncing s, you put the tip of your tongue close to your teeth and squeeze out your breath. It sounds close to “s” in the English word “sweet”.

To clarify the stupid video lesson:
You start practicing from the basic easier X. It is sort of funny sounding S. You try to utter S, while your tongue is pressed against your lower teeth. The result seems to sound close to the English S or TH, but it's not identical and the Chinese speakers will sense the difference. IPA: [ɕ]
After mastering the X, move to J. It is like the Chinese X sound but now try to add T in front of it. It sounds close to an English TS (caTS), but again it's not identical. It is very difficult for the English speakers because they can hardly say TS at the beginning of a syllable. IPA: [t͡ɕ]
Finally, move to Q. It is like the Chinese J sound, but now you add an H after the J sound, without generating a new syllable. Linguistically this is called "aspiration". In several Asian languages there are aspirated consonants, meaning they are merged with the H sound. The Chinese Q sounds close to TS'H, but with a nuance. IPA: [t͡ɕʰ]

You are showing j but your are pronouncing ji. You are adding an vowel namely "i"
You shouldn't do that, it causes the people with no acquaintance with phonetics to get confused.
Particularly english speakers, whose ability to perceive the sounds of languages is massed up due to their bad habit of referring to the sounds with the names of their corresponding alphabet (for example h as ech sound, w as dabelew sound, k as key sound) since their childhood.
