Is Data Science A Viable Career Path?

I am doing a bachelor of computer science and have not yet chosen a discipline to major in. My lecturer mentioned the disciplines and one grabbed my attention: Data Science. He explained how data science is the future of technology and gave some examples. Do you believe that data science is the future and can you please explain what it is in a little more detail?
