    Also don’t forget under cabinet lighting! It’s extremely helpful. And dimmable pendant lights above the island are great for cozy mood lighting at night when you don’t want bright overhead lights

    Highly recommend swapping sink with the stove top! the constant windo cleaning with the stove in front of it will get tiring real fast and it's much nicer to have sink in front of a window, also way more space for cooking around th stove on the kitchen island :)

      This!!! While James is right. The sink will be a little far from the coffee bar area. Having a window by the sink is so nice. And the stove top on island for socializing while cooking makes more sense.

      The other problem with the sink in the island is that dishes accumulate in the middle of the space (we have this problem and it drives me nuts!). At least with the sink on the side, you do not have to stare at the dishs while you eat in the dining room. Plus I think your plumming is already on that side, so it might be cheaper not to have to relocate it.

      I agree, came here to say that too - when I bought my house there were only solid wood bottom cabinets in the kitchen, so to add more storage space on a budget, I got some plain ikea cabinets in dark navy to add as uppers - I loved this combo to begin with, but around a year into living in the house I started regretting this decision, as my kitchen would definitely look much lighter if the tops were a light colour instead. Now that the bottom wood ones got quite dirty too, I would be able to just paint them with a darker colour, but with the top ones already being dark I can't do this, as I don't want to make the room even more dark-toned 🫠

    • @madness5785
      @madness5785 Před 4 měsíci +3

      I would agree. The white cabinets at the bottom might get annoying with keeping them clean, especially with dogs (or kids) 🥵 we have a green kitchen, very easy to clean off, it's kind of a laminated texture. you still see lightly, where somebody touched with wet or greasy hands. I imagine the white kitchen would multiply those stains

      I agree, the wood will hide more smudges from day to day use in high traffic spots by you, James, and the puppies so I would go with wood lowers. The white uppers would also make the ceilings appear taller especially if the ceiling and walls are similar white/cream colors.

    Don't forget to add electricity outlets on the island. They are so handy when cooking with appliances like mixers and rice makers. We also moved into a home with a shallow spice cabinet in the island right across from the stove, and I love being able to see all of our spices without having to dig through the pantry!

    Professional kitchen planner here, if you decide for the fridge next to the oven, make sure it's isolated we'll bc it could be very energy effective otherwise bc the oven gives off a lot of heat that the fridge has to balance out. Everything else is seriously just personal preference 😊 Sending love from Germany 😊

  • @kelseytell1259
    @kelseytell1259 Před 4 měsíci +146

    I would do the fridge and pantry next to each other. All your ingredients in essentially the same spot would be so convenient. Also I like white uppers to give the illusion of height.

  • @atrinoisa
    @atrinoisa Před 4 měsíci +53

    My personal take:
    Sink in front of window and stove top in the island (easier to clean)
    Oven AWAY from fridge. The fridge would have to work harder if you put it next to something hot like that.
    I think the pantry works well on either side but makes sense pairing it with the fridge since that's all your ingredients together.
    White cabinets on TOP to make the room feel bigger and brighter.

  • @skibbitypapp
    @skibbitypapp Před 4 měsíci +331

    Personally I suggest putting the pantry next to the fridge and keeping the oven on the door side. If you put the oven next to the fridge or pantry the heat will cause problems for food storage & your fridge will have to work harder to keep things cool. Also if the oven is on the door side, when the heat is too much in the kitchen you can open the back doors for ventilation.
    Also regarding the cabinetry I would say wood above the Hob would be better because in my experience when cooking with oils the cabinets above the Hob tend to get dirty quickly. But the white would be nice as accent cabinets for the pantry and above the oven & fridge.
    As for the ones under the counter I would suggest wood as well with the dogs. My mom had white cabinets floor to ceiling and drove herself crazy trying to keep them looking clean.
    These are just suggestions coming from issues I’ve noticed personally. So please take them with a grain of salt and do what makes you & James the happiest ❤

    • @lypreila7913
      @lypreila7913 Před 4 měsíci +38

      As a professional cook of.... many, many years, I fully support this take. Separating the oven and fridge is much better, and having the pantry and fridge near each other not only helps your fridge last longer because of the aforementioned heat problems, but it really helps me personally keep better track of what I have and need, as both of the main food storage areas are right next to each other.

      Another thing to think about putting the pantry in the fridge together- it will be easier when unloading the groceries. Everything is in one place and you don’t have to run around the kitchen to put away things.

  • @userO.0..
    @userO.0.. Před 4 měsíci +82

    I would do wood on the lower cabinets because dirt will be very visible on white whereas it won‘t be as visible with wood. The upper cabinets don‘t get dirty that easily so white would work really well there

    Hi, an architect here! I highly recommend swapping the sink with the stove unless you can replace the fixed window with operable ones so that the odor won't be around the area too long or even slip to the living room area. Moreover, it'll be very messy around the sink if you don't have a dish cabinet under the counter. You may want to switch the oven with the pantry since the high temperature can ruin your fridge in the long run, or relocate the mini-home cafe (coffee machine) at the back of the dining room (where the egg artwork is)! It'll be very comfortable to reach out for coffee or tea from the living room area, so there won't be too many people circulating around the cooking station. You will also need to consider another storage area for appliances you don't frequently use because some pretty kitchens are usually ruined by messy appliances.
    You can get better lighting by opening up the space to the corridor area and switching the kitchen-dining door with just a simple archway, and your foyer area won't feel too cramped or too small. It will feel more spacious when you want to welcome guests or families since their belongings will be too stuffy around the area. The less you use doors, the more spacious your home will be. Also, I would suggest incorporating a mini bar in front of the kitchen island if you want people to sit there when watching somebody else cook, and you won't be staring at the wall constantly since the kitchen only has two windows for inside-out interaction and lighting sources.
    In my experience, matching wood tones can be very frustrating if you use HPL or vinyl and you want to combine them with wooden furniture. Because no matter how we see it, fake and real wood can be drastically different. So I suggest you combine the overall palette with another material like steel that can add the industrial-wood nuance or green accents to make the room more lively.
    Nice video, anyway!

  • @lkm11b
    @lkm11b Před 4 měsíci +26

    Interior designer here! As much as I love the wood lowers and white uppers, fake wood to real wood can be very noticeable. Second, no matter how hard you try, your wood laminate will never match your wood floors. If that is something you are fine with design wise, great! If not, it will bug you because it will be so close that it will look off.
    All together, beautiful design! And excited to see it come to life!

    • @sydneykleindoesdesign
      @sydneykleindoesdesign Před 4 měsíci +9

      Interior designer here too and I was thinking the same thing while watching this video. Also, if the kitchen island / work bench is going to be that wide, they should consider adding storage on the side where the chairs are to for less frequently used items.

  • @quixxovel
    @quixxovel Před 4 měsíci +26

    personally, I have my stove top and sink switched, I find that a sink in the island (as I currently have) accumulates a lot of visual clutter in the centre of the room. plus, having your stove under cabinets and against a window/wall accumulates more grease. as long as you have lots of drawer space, I don't think you'll have a lack of pantry within all of those extra cabinets.

  • @sophiemitchell617
    @sophiemitchell617 Před 4 měsíci +96

    Super exciting and it's going to look amazing!
    I've always found that it's better not to have the sink on the island because when the inevitable dirty dishes pile up it's really visible being in the middle of the room. Plus having the hob on the island means you can chat and hang out with people sitting on the other side of the island while you cook. You can get pop up extractor fans that come out of the island rather than coming from above, but we've never had an extractor fan and it's never been an issue but probably depends on the sorts of things that you cook!

      Pot fillers are becoming more and more popular. I’m a kitchen designer IRL, and it’s noted on probably half of my projects in the last year. I personally don’t see the benefit of them since you still have to take the pot to the sink to dispose of the water when you’re done.

    As someone who moved into a house that doesn’t have a pantry and not many cabinets…definitely prioritize the pantry space! We had to buy a large standalone cabinet for more storage and also have baskets hanging on the wall for produce. It works but if we ever update the kitchen we are definitely adding a pantry!

    I’d definitely recommend having the microwave above the oven in the built in. I love my oven, microwave setup, everything is at just the right height and you’d gain precious bench space back in your coffee nook.
    If you can find a way to add more pantry space make that a priority as well. Better to have more than not enough. If you wanted you could see about moving the coffee nook and pantry to the other wall where the dog bowls are and move the kitchen entry over.
    You could also try looking up a space planner and see their ideas or even hire them if your budget allows.
    All the best and I’m excited to see how it turns out!

    #2: from experience with my kitchen, definitely do white uppers and timber lowers. My white lower cabinets CONSTANTLY need deep cleaned due to pets, cooking, etc whereas my white uppers just need normal / common cleaning
    #3: Stainless steel is such a pain (in my opinion). Super annoying to keep fingerprints off of. Whenever I polish them, they’re beautiful for like a day and then full of fingerprints

    With your fluffy puppers, I would not recommend white cabinets on the bottom (even though they look great) cause you’ll need to clean them constantly. With the oven situation, I personally like having a double oven, but the space is definitely much harder to manage. I don’t know if it’s available in Australia, but there are compact(?) double ovens where it’s the same size as a normal oven but has two mediumish ovens instead. It’s great for keeping the space from feeling super cramped. Also, I echo the sentiments of some of the other commenters, the stove in front of the window will be a messy situation, and always go for more pantry space. It disappears fast. I’m so excited for you guys!!!! This will be so fun!!!!

    20:23 Servings the oven might be what the kitchen company had in mind when placing the oven next to the refrigerator.
    Alternatively placing the those two appliances on the right side might increase accessibility even more for servicing.
    However, at least in the US, many people have refrigerators with built in chilled water taps so depending on how plumbing currently is configured it might be advantageous have them remain on the left hand side.

    We have the same coffee machine as you and ours is away from the sink (it has to be as there is no space next to the sink). I have to be very careful when carrying the drip tray, that fills with liquid, to the sink. I would suggest having a think about how you could get the coffee machine in a space that is close to the sink for overall ease of use. Regarding the bottom cabinetry - just think about what is easy to clean. Those trendy cabinets with the ridges are harder to clean, especially when pets are involved as well. Good luck with it all and I can't wait to hear more about your kitchen reno!

I can only imagine how expensive this will be, but it’s gonna be so worth it in the end. I’d consider putting the sink by the window if you can though. Also my kitchen layout is a little similar, and I have the sink by the wall, and the stovetop in the island (I live in Scandinavia, and I think thats overwhelmingly more common here, then the american way of having the sink in the island) I love it because it´s easier to talk to people while cooking since you don't have your back turned to them while stirring the pot and pans :)
    Congrats on getting a new kitchen! Very exciting :)

    White upper cabinets look great, but I second someone else who suggested putting the sink there, instead. Glass and white cabinets would need basically constant cleaning and degreasing if you cook anything like how I cook!
    With the range on the island you’d still have a nice sink/fridge/stove triangle, but it would need some thought about venting if you don’t want a huge drop-down in the middle of the room. Maybe flush-mount depending on how high your ceilings are.
    Double oven. Never going to regret having more (says an American! lol), you can always use the one to store pots and pans if you really don’t use it.
    A tiny sink by the coffee pot might be the way to go, if you can run water and drain lines there without tearing up the entire floor
    I have nothing to suggest re: decor because I learn from you!

    Your new kitchen is going to be gorgeous. I'm so excited for you😊! A few ideas:
    1. If you're worried about the coffee maker being so far from the sink and you have money in the budget, you could put a small bar sink in the corner of the island close to the appliance nook. I had 2 sinks in my old kitchen and I loved it.
    2. Alternatively, if you're worried about having a big enough pantry, you could switch where your pantry and appliance nook is and stack the microwave over the shelf that holds the coffee maker.
    3. If you entertain a lot 2 ovens are very handy. I had a slide in range on one wall and a built in counter depth refrigerator with a wall oven right next to it on a different wall. We had no issues with the heat from the oven affecting the refrigerator. I do think the way you have it set up is aesthetically pleasing, though.

    Fridge on the left, oven in the right -> they should be separate cause of the temperature, yes new appliances probably are fine but it does look better. I think doing all the upper cabinets white is best: it did look bigger! And brown at the bottom is better with dogs and/or little kids with slobber and handprints:) if possible getting more light in is probably going to be worth it In the long run (the glass door to the hallway and/or adding one in the dining room :) you’re not going to regret it 🙈

    I lived somewhere once that had one oven/stovetop unit, but the space for the oven was divided into one shallower oven space with a more regular sized oven space below it. I LOVED having two ovens to be able to cook multiple things at different temperatures, but I especially loved the mini-oven that was built in. I used the smaller one 99% of the time, but used both when I needed to! It was like having a full sized oven and toaster oven built into one. So useful, and would totally recommend.

    As someone with white kitchen counters, I recommend white on top instead of on bottom, bc my doors on my lower cabinets get so obviously dirty. Idek how they do.
    Also, I always find it so funny when you say "you Americans have ___" (like the tap above the stove) but it's always just something only rich people have lol.

    My biggest recommendations {I'm only 10 minutes in, so you might have already said it, but draws instead of cupboards for your counters., I have a couple of friends, and my Dad has these. I have rheumatoid arthritis, Fibromyalgia & CFS. Believe me, those would be a life saver. I really struggle to put dishes away or get dishes and pots etc out.
    Wholeheartedly agree with those saying don't put your oven near the window. Such a mess. And it's nice to have some window as you do dishes.

    We just got a double oven unit and its been SO nice. If you don't entertain often I'd say skip it and keep the extra pantry space, but if you like having people over its a game changer! Good compromise would be a split oven. Not sure if they make them for built ins but thats what we have instead of two full size ones and its perfect :)

    Have a double oven stacked just as described. I had never had one until my current house so didn't really get the hype, but now that I have experienced it, I am never going back. With the baking and other cooking/hosting you like to do it is a game changer. It is so much less stressful to have independent control of two ovens to give different temperatures and extra room for holidays. Remember, it is so much cheaper to put these in up front than to come back and retrofit.

    My parents redid their kitchen a few years back in slate grey and teal. All the main cabinets are grey and the islands is teal, which actually looks really nice so you could do white cabinets and keep the island in wood if you wanted to. Also, double ovens are great, they have one average size one and one smaller one which is quicker to heat up and it's great if you have people over with different dietary needs as well.

    Just some ideas you may like:
    1. In my opinion it looks better with the wood cupboards around like an U shape and just the inner top cupboards in white.
    2. What you could do is to put a long slim cupboard with drawers to pull out between the long cupboard on the left side and the oven for things like cereals, herbs, sugar, flour, rice etc. (Like the metod cupboard from ikea)
    3. You can build 1 or 2 shelves to pull out into the big cupboard on the left side as well as a plug for things like an airdryer or a tea kettle.
    4. Build in cupboards for the kitchen island to have more space for dishes etc
    5. Instead of two ovens you could stack a microwave or a steamer above the oven.
    6. Maybe some nice outdoor lights around the vines😊
    Anyway your kitchen will turn out beautiful, as your sims builds do❤

    Hey I’m an interior design student, I thought I’d share my thoughts. The sink should go in the island, if you want a welcoming kitchen where you can chat with guests (that can sit on the barstools) and look around into the dining area. If you don’t put the sink in the island you will have a more introverted feel. You can look outside, but chatting is more difficult. I recommend the sink in the island instead of the stove, because it’s more practical. The stove needs a range hood and you can hide that easily in the upper cabinets. You could even make the window behind the stove open, so that fumes go directly outside. I also prefer the white upper cabinets but squared off. You can make them a little bit more narrow than the 2 tall, wooden cabinets on each side. So that there is a visual separation. Definitely take the wall all the way back! And I highly recommend a European build in fridge! So that it looks like a cabinet from the outside. We have bever had an issue with that. I would choose 1 oven and 1 microwave above each other. And I like the mirror on the wall, since it is already a dark space, it will help expand the room. Pantry should be the closest to the dining erea, with the oven next to it. Hope this helps! ❤

      Maybe thats not a thing everywhere, but rangehoods can come within the electrical stove top, the fumes will be sucked inside and downwards. Google the brands Bora, Bosch and so on. They became a big thing in Germany at least. We just built a house, that stove top was on the top of the list

      Hey, I know exactly what you mean. It definitly has it's benefits, but it also causes some problems that make it not functional for every space. And I imagine that they already have a rangehood right now. So it would be the easiest, cheapest way to keep it. @@madness5785

    Minor recommendations:
    Having the cooktop in the Island is great for hosting cause you can keep cooking while talking to people (less useful to do dishes while talking to people). You can add a splash guard that pops up when needed that can double as an extractor so you don't have to add a hood over the island (don't have it at our place but a friend does and it's magical).
    White uppers 100% -- they will get less dirty that the lowers so it's less for upkeep. For the same reason, absolutely no slats. They get super dusty, super quickly and suck to clean
    Lastly - don't forget lighting!!! Under cabinet, pendant lights, etc. Makes the kitchen really

    I’m sure the kitchen will be amazing! One thing about the fridge and the stove is that they’ll use more electricity if they’re next to each other so in nordic countries it’s at least heavily recommended that they shouldn’t be built close together since it’s not useful or ecological. Might be good to check that out in the design! 😮

    My parents have a double oven (in the UK) and it's very convenient when we're having pizzas or a roast dinner. I guess if it's just you and James, they might not both get used often but if you enjoy hosting or you end up having a family in this house, it's definitely useful. Plus, if you're making a meal with several components, you can put the ovens on low heat and use them to keep food warm whilst you're finishing other elements :)

    In Belgium a double installation of 2 oven/microwaveoven are common in renovated kitchens (of people who can afford it), sometimes even three ovens (one is a steamer)! Very handy if you like cooking and need to put multiple dishes in there at the same time.
    For a sink: white is easier to keep clean, in black you'll see the stains of the chalk in the water if you don't dry it out every time. In out kitchen renovation, we've planned a little 'open' space in the side of the cabinet that you can see from the living room, to stack our pretty cooking books so you can see them :) otherwise that corner cabinet would've lost some space, so we opened up a nook from the 'wrong' side

    Omgoodness the kitchen inspiration you are wanting is nearly the exact same to what my partner and I have!
    We have our light wood at the bottom and white gloss cabinetry with a white and wood island, such as your inspiration.
    I can highly recommend to do wood at the bottom because you won’t believe how quickly our upper cabinets get finger marks on it! I can’t believe how much worse it would look to have white gloss at the bottom.
    I can highly recommend as well soft close cabinetry as this is a life saver with no handles.
    With white counter tops, 15:26 no one really lets you know, is how easily they stain! We left a coffee cup ring over night and that ring stained our counter 🙈
    All in all with a bit more care and keeping everything in its place the layout of ours is a breeze and so refreshing and bright, the wood makes everything feel homey and warm especially on a dark winter morning with a touch of white to modernise and brighten up your room.
    I really hope this could help and solidify any of your decisions.
    Good luck guys!

    As an interior designer I would recommend the fridge to be closer to the "front door" as when we walk in with groceries it will be easier. It will look better if the pantry is next to the oven. Sometimes you put a microwave above the oven or you have two ovens like you said. If you cook a lot and bake a lot it will be very handy. There are some models that are one piece of equipment but can be divided inside and you can cook two different things. It will be easy and cheaper to have the hood in the cabinets above the electric hob. Also if the appliances are all black that also looks really nice and adds something to the kitchen instead of steel which is harder to clean and very plain. When it comes to colors the little darker wood I think would look more interesting. Can't wait to see it when it's done :)

    We did a compete gut remodel of our kitchen a couple years ago. We went with a white sink with white counters and I love it. I love the look of the sink blending so seamlessly into the counters. It does need to be cleaned a bit more often than a darker sink but it's really quick and easy to clean so it's not an issue to me. I agree with everyone saying you should do write upper cabinets and wood lower. And to swap the sink and stove around. I don't have dogs but I've seen some kitchens with a built in place to put the dog bowls and it seems like a nice idea.
    The renovation process was really not fun - be prepared for everything to take longer than they say it will, lots of noise, and eating lots of takeout. It's so worth it in the end though!

    first i want to say, i’m in school currently for kitchen and bath design so i was SO excited to watch this. your vision for the kitchen is gorgeous and i know that huge island space will come in handy! personally, i would recommend keeping the fridge and oven separate, due to the fridge probably having to work harder to keep cool while you’re using your oven. i would have them on opposite sides, i think how you kept them at the end, so you have the little work triangle (that you see in most kitchens) from the fridge to the sink to the oven/stovetop. would also highly recommend doing white uppers rather than white lower cabinets, due to dirt and debris, especially with the two pups!! i personally thought it looked better in the sims having all uppers one color rather than wood for the end pieces, but id have to judge it in person to give my call on that. also very smart not having an enclosed fridge space, if you did that and had to purchase a new fridge you’d be kicking yourself in the future. 😂 good luck to you and james on your renovation, and i hope it turns out perfect!!

    16:42 you could put shelves on this wall. You have a lot of bench space but not much space for nick-nacks. Like for cook books. Small vases or small herb pots, photos etc. I think a place for photos in the kitchen by the dinning table is a must for me. Also the glass door you’d like to put in by the hallway might be a bad idea with dogs and their dirty faces and scratching, a simple archway would let in just as much light but not get dirty. If you wanted to keep them out of the kitchen you could put up dog/baby gates

    I personally think having the living room closed off completely is a good thing, keeps it more snug and relaxing, also would mean you could move the L shape sofa and tv unit further away from the door to the hall.
    Would it be an option to have the hidey hole be the pantry and the small current pantry idea be a place to hide the appliances just stacked instead. Like how in America they often have a microwave high up rather than counter level. That way the coffee maker is closer to the sink (even if the sink and stove top swap places)
    So excited for you guys, renos can be stressful but it's so fun to design and create a space that works for you rather than you have to work around what was already there.

Built-in appliances all come in standard sizes, so it's easy to find a replacement.
