"Is Rishi Sunak really suggesting that investigating war crimes are a 'distraction'?" | LBC debate

  • Earlier today, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Hamas leaders are 'deeply unhelpful'.
This also comes alongside comments made by Michael Gove who said they UK risks 'descending into the darkness' of anti-Semitism.
Ben Kentish reacts to the PM's comments and wonders, Is the UK going to have 'less credibility' in calling out Russia and China when our own PM says investigations into our allies is 'deeply unhelpful'?
Ben is joined by World Affairs Editor for the Times Catherine Philp and Director of Public Affairs at the Jewish Leadership Council Russell Langer to discuss more.

When the Nazis persecuted the Jews during the 1930s/40s, they didn't need any excuses. Yes, Germany was crippled by international debt, but that wasn't the fault of the Jewish diaspara, yet the latter were still chosen to be a scapegoat.
By contrast, the rate of 'antisemitic incidents' in recent months have been directly attributed to 7 October. What does that tell us? That perhaps some of the incidents recorded as 'antisemitic' are in fact not 'antisemitic' but simply critical of Israel's actions following the, admittedly abhorrent, events of 7 October. Obviously, NO genuine case of antisemitism can ever be defended/justified, but a lot of the anger right now appears to be a direct response to the airstrikes/blockage of aid, water and power to Gaza, and not, as we've seen from the far-right, both specifically during the 30s/40s, and in general, blind hate towards Jewish people simply for being Jews.
Finally, NO ONE, should conflate criticism of Israel with hate of Jews, and that applies to all sides of the debate. Jews shouldn't suffer persecution for what Israel is doing, and neither should critics of Israel be wrongly identified as 'antisemitic'.
