  • You asked for a home hop progress report, Chop & Brew has one for you. With only a few weeks left in the hop-growing season -- Chip, Dawson and Ted have late-summer updates on their home hop-growing efforts. (Well, Dawson and Ted do anyway.) We talk a bit about how to know when your hops are ready to pick, the easy way to dry the cones, and how to store them. Coming soon: a fresh-hop brew day episode. [Original postdate: August 23, 2013]

    You can purchase multi-level net drying racks from a hydro store. I purchased one for my hops in NorCal. It has about 5 layers with zippers on the side so that the hops dont fall out. I just hang it in the garage to dry without a fan and it works good. I paid $25 for it a year ago.

    I have been seeing a lot of people using cheap furnace filters as well. Place a fan upside down, put a furnace filter on it, layer the hops, then put another filter on top of that.

    Turned out great! We also had great weather! It's always super satisfying picking hops and dumping them right in the kettle. Never gets old!!! I used a 4 to 1 ratio with four additions. One pound of hops and I still have plenty more to brew with. BLAM!!!

    I drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the barrel and put some rocks in there, but I think you're right. The amount of topsoil in the mixture I think just pretty much flooded, held the water too long and then turned to brick. Better luck next year!

    I used to use a big drying box at a film photography lab to dry out wet prints and negatives. It basically had racks of window screens stacked and blew warm air across them. I'll bet something like that would be good for drying hops, too. Takes less space!

    While I would love to see C&B on a huge scale, we have to be careful, right, Ben. It's a slippery slope once you start letting too much other people have a say in your production. I think we learned that with "Brew Masters" and with "Brewing TV." I have a master plan, but it certainly involves a slow burn and keeping this project web-based for a while. But I'm happy that others like yourself have that intensity for the show!

    Several beers ago I know but here's some advice on the fertilizer. Only add bonemeal to the lower half to two-thirds of the planter mix initially. Else Its likely to burn-off newly forming root hairs on new plants regardless of type. Other sources of fertalizer have their do's/don'ts but you really got to be deliberate with the bonemeal. Great vid - I was wanting to know how ffar to thin them back and have a prety good idea now.

  • @toenyo

    • @ChopAndBrew
      @ChopAndBrew  Před 3 lety +2

      Being vacuum sealed helps either way, much better than just in a bag with air pushed out. Butn if in the fridge I'd still suggest using sooner than later. They can hang out for a year-plus if vacuum-sealed and in freezer.

      @@toenyo You can do whatever you want, my friend, and India Pale Lagers are definitely a good thing. Since it's prehopped extract I would put those other hops in really late in the boil or in whirlpool so you get a lot of their flavors and aromas, not so much bitterness. Make sense?
