My anxiety level would have been way up there on shortening the axle, # 3 of course , you made it look “no big deal”. That box of brackets etc looks familiar Welder Series, of course you said that later. Any word on the 1930 front axle “your guardian angel present mishap” ? Well edited , very enjoyable.
Putting the new axle in now. Hopefully have it for a test drive tonight! Video to come.
Thanks for the great video, I'm about to narrow my first 9 inch so I'm really glad I found your video today. I have the small bearing end version of the 9 inch and I'm planning on cutting the tube ends off to get the desired length, and then weld on new flanges from Moser. I have cut to length axles coming from Speedmaster. I'm planning to make a straightening jig similar to the one Moser sells, was really looking forward to seeing how you used a jig to straighten...but maybe the Camera Lady wasn't available?! Also learned about the Welder Series 4-Link kit from your video, nice to have and alternative to Speedway. Thanks for all the useful info!
Sorry I borrowed the jig and had to return it. Essentially the bar goes through the 3rd member and there's discs on the ends that fit into the bearing ends. If they fit in without forcing you're good. If not you have to heat the opposite side of the tube where there's interference on the disc and then quench it, effectively shrinking it to pull the tube back. You may have to do it several times or get lucky and there's nothing out of alignment. If I have to do this again I'm making my own jig.
I found a more economical jig than the Moser and decided to buy it instead of make my own. If you search "how to narrow a rear axle" by Wayne Compton you can see a youtube video of the jig in action. The straightening jig is made by Lead Mine Products, available for purchase on ebay. I just bought a set of 6 pucks for $129US that work with the Ford 9" big and small wheel bearings and the small carrier...they have lots of other combinations available. You have to buy your own 1.25" dia cold rolled rod, they don't ship that, probably $50 to 60 locally for me.
