  • From the Orchestra’s inception in 1969 it has specialized in dance band music from the 1920s and 1930s with classic arrangements from bandleaders such as Ray Noble, Jack Hylton and Ambrose. The orchestra also pays special attention to the American bands that so influenced popular music in that era too, these include of course Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Ted Weems, as well as legendary crooners such as Bing Crosby and the ‘British’ answer to the ‘old groaner’ Al Bowlly.

    Finally again a live concert by one of the best orchestras that play the music of the 20s and 30s. Thanks! In memory of the great bandleader and arranger Keith Nichols

    America"s youth could use a strong dose of this music.

      They could use a generic system of formative values that don't include killing each other. Apart from that, I'm sure a little fun wrag-time wouldn't hurt.

    Just back from seeing these lads live in York. They basically played this set, plus Duncan Galloway up front of course. Fabulous to have live music back in our lives after 2 years.

      Lucky B'stard! Closest I got was recording a live radio broadcast maybe 30+ years ago on a decent open reel, and a cretinous woman managed to screw that up (shrew screwed a lot up for me). Glad you had a great time, these guys are the best.

    Thank you so much for this nice video. Congratulations for "all" : musicians, cameras, sound quality..& more. Nice (for me) to see (and hear) Tom Langham in this band. Jo Luttringer (Chris Barber and Pat halcox close friend from January 1961 to her death).

    Chewgumer => Your question: Does Ronnie Scott likes this kind of music?
    The Limehouse-Jazzband from the Netherlands never succeeded to play in this Ronnie Scott Jazz-Club.
    This PRO has the same line-up (Fletcher Henderson type) and the same repertoire.
    I understand your QUESTION!

    This orchestra has changed their style since I first heard them. They seem to have gone from being a 1930s style dance band to more of a 1920s jazz group.

      Pretty sure they've always been 20's/30's unless you factor in the occasional insect variant. Hope you're paddling Madelane in a proper manner David ;-)

    Spats Langham on banjo resembles Rowan Atkinson with his cheeky face ! and Dave Ford the trumpet star who cut his teeth but not his lip playing in Bristol dance bands.

    They sound nothing like the Henderson band of the 20's or even the pre-war English bands.

      No - they're better. Better timing, better tuning, pretty much better everything. 100 years ago+ things were frankly somewhat cack-handed. Famously, Elgar was approached to re-record one of his works (they could now squeeze it on to one side) to which he replied: "what's wrong with the first recording?" you go have a listen - all over the place; no strict time-keeping and comes across a complete shambles.

      Used to go to the original club in the 1960's as a teenager. The atmosphere there was unique and so much part of the jazz scene at that time. The food was terrible and often never arrived. Ronnie used to joke about 'a thousand flies can't be wrong' when trying to promote his grub. I am afraid you are right about Ronnie not liking this music, it is all a matter of taste I suppose. One thing is for certain the great names in jazz will never walk off the street and play impromptu at this new club as they did in the 1960's. It was a sensational place but being 75 I can be nostalgic !

    • @BernardVictor
      @BernardVictor Před 3 lety

      I agree. The very opposite to his taste. The only good thing is that they are more polished than the Trad bands of the time when he was around.

    • @chewgumer
      @chewgumer Před 3 lety

      I hope that this isn`t future music policy for the club. Two Ronnie jokes " We were so poor we had to wear cast-offs such as a Japanese Admiral`s uniform"..... "We couldn`t afford Christmas decorations. We had to wait for Grandad to sneeze over the Christmas tree".@@BernardVictor
