Tightening my Dreads | Root and Length Dreadlock Maintenance

  • Tightening my dreads up (finally) with some proper root and length maintenance. I'm not that vigilant about tightening my dreadlocks because I like a little bit of a wild look but my dread roots were looking pretty bad since my recent colour job and something needed to be done about it.
    The technique I use for tightening my dread roots and lengths is basically just the twist and rip method but applied to the loose hairs that have come out of my dreadlocks. I grab the loose hairs surrounding my dreadlocks up by the roots and tighten them around the dread by twisting the hairs, ripping them apart, and then criss crossing them around the length of the dread and repeating. This creates little knots with the loose hairs essentially tightening the dreads by locking up more hairs around them. As I twist and rip the hairs from root down the lengths I am able to gather more loose hairs from the lengths and pull them into the tightening dread as I go. It creates a much fuller, thicker, harder feeling dread and seems like a great option for me so far.
    This method of tightening my dreads is really convenient because it allows me to work on tightening them anywhere and at any time. I don't need a mirror or any special tools, meaning I can be tightening my dreadlock roots and lengths while at work, at home watching TV, in the car, wherever. It's a much more passive way of keeping up with my dreads than other methods of dread lock tightening.
    The roots of my dreads are looking much cleaner and so are the ends since using this method of tightening up my dreads.
    I hope this helps you along your dreadlocks journey my friends, please subscribe to my channel and come back next week to see what I'm up to!

    How big of sections did you do? My hair type is kind of wavy but extremely thick. And how do you take care of new dreads. (Like washing, drying, and so on) and last question when should I start using "strings" and beads?

    Creative. Does it wash out right away after a shower ? I’m going back and forth with letting it do it’s own thing to crocheting to toot flipping or interlocking. I’m gonna try this after I deep soak tonight. :) hopeful :)

    I started my locks around January with twist and rip method. I'm loving them so far, but they seem to not lock up unless I touch them up. The roots and some ends keep loosening. How do I tighten roots if the hair is locked above the loosening part. Its like I kinda have to undo the whole loc to retighten the root, which I don't do lol.

    • @LauraLPHair
      @LauraLPHair  Před 6 lety +3

      You can take a comb with tiny teeth and tease the roots. Put the comb in and tease towards your head and it'll pull the knots up! I had the same problem in the first couple of months and doing this worked great.

    I’m the same way! - twist and rip is totally convenient! Crochet takes a lot of time and is meticulous.

    • @LauraLPHair
      @LauraLPHair  Před 6 lety

      Thanks 🙂 they are beginning to get really nice. The twist n rip is too easy and surprisingly if I keep up on it they don't really shrink. Have you found that?

    • @odat2478
      @odat2478 Před 6 lety +1

      Laura Moonfairy ...now I think about it, seems they have stayed the same length as my hair! I’ve even gotten a trim and had them trimmed along with it so they wouldn’t be longer!
