  • Today we are talking about TRAVELLING, is it helpful for your body, or just honestly bad for the planet and your well being? We just got back from a Euro trip where tourism had obliterated Italy's ability to feel ... safe? Today we talk about how travelling relates to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the history of tourism and why humans love to do it.

So glad you’re still doing this pod, it’s gotten me through a pandemic and a horrible breakup. I know it can’t last forever but it’s such a privilege to enjoy these conversations you have while you’re sharing them. ALSO please do more chatty “side note” pods! That one was a treat.

they post the full episode with all the sidenotes on Apple Podcasts. not sure with Spotify but I'm assuming the same. they only post the study time portion here on YT to match the title I guess.

Travelling across America from Pennsylvania to Oregon and back again in 1984, by van (Vinnie, as in "see my Van Go"...) opened up a whole new weird world.
The landscapes, the geology, the wildlife, the shade of blue at the top of the Rockies, the tiny western towns still laid out the way I'd seen them in old westerns onTV, the idea that a 300 acre farm was nothing out there (farms were measured in thousands of acres),... it truly expands your world...

    Next episode in bali. 🎉
1:07 I think 80 km is about right by past standards using horses.
because Arabic also uses the same standards. where a person may not fast if they travel a distance of 16 farsah (around 80 km). but this uses camels or horses. not a plane or a car

8:27 in rich countries when you encounter a problem you can hire someone else to solve it. in poor countries you have little to solve because you can't hire someone else. For example, in the United States there are people who work to organize wedding events. but in poor countries the wedding is handled directly by the bride and family
    8:48 don't we call that experience .

Our family went to Expo 67 in Montreal and it was the first time I'd been out of the US. It was awesome.
Our dive club went to Prescott on the St. Lawrence for a dive trip, stayed at a bed and breakfast, had a loooooooooooooong dinner in period (17-something) surroundings at The Barracks. Also awesome.
Our local Longship Company towed a Viking ship to L'Anse aux Meadows one year for some sort of celebration... broke the mast and had to row back. Not to southern MD, just back to the dock...
Yeah, Canada... that's been my "exotic vacation location". You guys rule.

It feels like everyone is catching up on EVERYTHING they missed out and had FOMO about during the pandemic. It's just a question of when or IF that will die down in the years to come. There must be stats for this, like has it peaked and decreasing or increasing? Who's to say?
Thanks for an awesome pod as always, gents!

I like the idea of visiting new places.
But i really dislike the traveling.
Im a 6ft man with lower back problems. And driving or flying for more than 2-3h usually kills my back :[

But there were tourists in the 1600s when people travelled across Europe and Asia or later took a boat to America. It was not impossible.

I wonder if by "gastronomy" they ment gastronomy issues 😂 .. like .. different regions have different food and sometimes that makes travelers have different 💩 !

Amazing title that got me to click and a great topic. God awful amount of talk about how "privileged people" are the ones thay travel. Clearly needed more reaserch as immediately after saying thay you contridicted yoursleves. Probably retain more viewers by not spitting the same nonsense as every other podcast today. Lol
