"Is this aerodynamically efficient?"
"For the shape, it performs quite well."
Wise man, good answer. For being a brick, it is the most aerodynamically efficient brick.
Especially in a low-speed situation, when the aerodynamics don't matter... :)
They've got the sales twisting down. That's why they won't be talking to me. Not at all wise.
Newspeak... Utopian vomit talk, inclusively effusive.
Maybe if Jay would let him combine more than three words together without interrupting him this would be interesting.
Still more aerodynamically efficient than the Countach
I appreciate all the historical car references that Jay made ("this is just like my 1909 Baker Electric..."). But they seemed to go over the heads of the Canoo guys.
with every historical reference that Jay makes, their eyes just glaze over. their heads are so far in the future, they can't appreciate the past.

@james avery -we're about to enter the hardest times in Earth's history. Read the book of Revelation sometime. The seven last plagues etc. It's about to get real.
Man, Jay Leno is so knowledgeable about cars. He asked great questions and added a lot of interesting stories to make this a wonderful interview.
But it is not an add only an interview again not an ad !!!!!
“Comes in any color as long as it’s black” lol, okay Henry Ford
It got a good laugh out of me.
but unlike Henry's vision, you have to be an evil rich guy like Leno, to be able to afford one.
@@mikegee8875 WRONG - they're trying to differentiate themselves from the luxury $100k+ EV sports cars and make a car that's actually affordable and useful. Yes it is anachronistic to have Jay Leno featuring the company (as they are kind of polar opposites)....and maybe that makes a good case for how mass-market Canoo can be

They are propaply afraid to give the car a personality because then SJWs get mad
Hehe true. Sometimes Engineers can lack that
The best thing that could have happen to Canoo was to have Leno tour their product. You can see on the engineers face the delight in talking with someone as knowledgeable Jay.
Really , I didn't see any delight in their faces , they don't even seem human
Even if the car isnt my cuppa tea, I thumbs up everything Jay's team uploads to this channel. The historical documentation alone will be invaluable for generations.

"For a brick, he flew pretty good"
And then there's. "So what's the range, do you know?" No Jay, they designed and built it, but never really thought to check the distance. It looks like Jay wants to get out of there ASAP from the beginning. Haha.

Jay Leno is so good at this, he’s truly a car aficionado that knows his stuff very well. I love the really great questions he asked them and how much automotive knowledge he has.
That being said, I don’t know if Canoo will be successful with this subscription model, Zipcar and Car2Go are already in this market.
I agree about Jay, perfect person to be looking at something like this and taking us all along for a peek at what's coming.
I also agree that a subscription model is a non-starter for most people. I know it is for me. Many people want to customize _their_ vehicle, make it unique from the millions of others. You can't do that with what is essentially a lease vehicle. They can call is whatever they want but it's a lease. Everyone should think back to the EV1 that GM brought out decades ago, and if you don't know the story there is a good video right here on YT that will get you up to speed quick. When you see what GM did to all those who were in the same position as Canoo proposes to put consumers, you'll have second thoughts about 'buying' a Canoo too.
Shame because I would really like to own one. But rent, no way is that happening for me.
Subscription really isn't any different than lease. And a lot of people lease cars.
Further, this company just got an order from WalMart for over 400,000 of these.

I'll have to say, if Jay's responsible for the interview content, he's right on the money. He's extremely on point, lots of varied content, extremely engaged. I'm really impressed.
I work for American Airlines, and our Electrical Engineer recently left to go to work for this company. He is a very sharp guy, and I'm sure Canoo will be blessed to have him on board. They recently opened a plant in Pryor, OK., about 20 minutes from my home, and they are doing amazing things.

I admire Jay's persistence to find a simple answer to the question that I want the answer to.
Alas, I''m still no wiser.
It's not that hard, sounds pretty convenient actually. Basically forget about car registration, maintenance, insurance, charging, etc. You pay a monthly fee and the rest is more or less handled by the company for you.

Car subscription plans will only work if they’re substantially cheaper and convenient for the consumer than leasing.
@@markdc1145 Yeah it's gonna depend on how they price it. I'd consider it if it was a better deal than getting a comparable Avis car rental for a month, for example.
@@AllanSustainabilityFan Perfect comparison. You can currently go out to your rental car agency and rent any car of your choice on a monthly basis. With this option you get stuck with this turd in any color you want as long as it is black. LOL I just dont see the business plan working on this startup.

Jay is an automobile encyclopedia! Love it.
When you apply for a job and the application says "must be completely devoid of humour"
It takes a special kind of young person to live in Los Angeles where they could work in the Tesla design studio or engineer rockets for SpaceX or work for any of 10,000 other companies making exciting things and instead they decide they'd rather work on a minivan city car that you can't buy, only rent by the month, and is only available in black. And just to rub it in that they've removed any and all excitement from the equation, they name the company after one of the slowest modes of transportation available.

"I know, let's make it a brick!!!"
lol
Well, only a couple of days ago, I thought how cool would it be to fit wheels to a shipping container !
It's not wildly different from existing vehicles. A brick is probably the ideal transit design but poor for aerodynamics - so they rounded some bits !
@Brad Sanchez Yup
@Brad Sanchez It'll be fine if done properly.
@gemini232003 Mechanical linkages can fail too ! That's why cars today have 3 separate braking systems - in case one fails. Steer by wire would also need 3 independent systems and all must fail 'safe'.
Jay: i am a guy who likes to own things.
Me: hell yeah, you do Jay!
As I recall, General Motors developed the skateboard platform and body EV back in the 1990's, but it didn't go anywhere. I'm very happy to see that someone has picked up the concept and is running with it. I really like this, and I see on their website that there are already multiple bodies available including the van we see here (in multiple variations), a pickup, and a multi-purpose delivery vehicle.
I hope their safety testing goes well.
Canoo is under investigation for fraud and now appears to be nothing more than a vaporware investment scam.
These Canoo guys are awkward, serious, and terrified of Jay’s spontaneous conversation. Someone needs to take them out for a few stiff drinks. Lol.

Why are they so afraid of HIM?!?
AvengerII I get the impression they, like much of this generation, are socially awkward with conversation because they spend so much time communicating impersonally on digital devices instead. Conversation is becoming a lost art. Sad.
Ralph I completely agree. It’s sad. I think Zuckerberg, Bezos, and Musk must be from another planet where they don’t verbalize nor socialize much. Lol.
@@user-tb5ns7hc5i
Zuckerberg, Then bezos I agree. However Elon musk is more conversational than you might think. You have to keep in mind that he's not really a fantastic speaker He definitely has some issues with that. But I've seen some personal interviews that he's done with people and he seems like a pretty nice guy. He's also brilliant, you don't often get the mix of engineer and business person to such an efficient degree. You often will find a brilliant engineer who is a terrible businessman and ends up not being able to sell the product he comes up with. And vice versa. Musk seems to have a nice balance of those two attributes. And it shows in his success. And no I'm not a Tesla fanboy There are plenty of issues there that I dislike. But the guy definitely thinks outside the box but keeps it close enough to the box that he knows it'll sell or work
You call it a subscription everybody else has always called it a rental

Jay keeps going on about aerodynamics, and the toaster seems better at toasting bread than cutting the wind.

Subscription, lol
It's a hipster way to say Car Rental. just like Enterprise Long Term Car Rental, no mileage either.
That makes sense.
Where are the curly-q mustaches? I was told hipsters have waxed curly mustaches!
Rental implies short term and subscription a more regular long term rental. At least to me that’s the connotations with the words
Or a lease.
Technically those two are bot the same nes.
I feel like this is the perfect Uber/Lyft vehicle. Focus is on efficiency, space, comfort, interior aesthetics etc... things a rider would care about. Uber/Lyft (the ideal vehicle owner) won't care about acceleration or exteriors when they go autonomous electric.
My question from the start was what was the purpose of this thing. Uber/Lyft seems a likely possibility but I didn't get how all the talk about subscription related that . I don't think this kind of thing is handled well with an interview format. There were too many unknowns. It needed to start with an overview or maybe an overview where the interviewer interjects questions.
I don't see Uber/Lyft as the subscriber but definitely interesting for a driver.
@@donaldcombs7270 I agree, but I still wonder about the business model. I'm always troubled by a company that feels a need to develop two things to get started. In this case a new electric car and a new way to charge for their use. If subscription is a good idea go buy some cars from an existing manufacturer and then put them out for subscription. If a big van electric car is a good idea build that and wholesale it to companies that will resell it/rent it out/put it up for subscription. The subscription model doesn't seem to be enough of an idea to justify a new car design. Gig ride share already exists, car rentals already exist, and car leases already exist. If for some reason subscription is a good idea the the companies doing those other things will just copy your idea but do it with cars from other manufacturers.
Agreed or GrubHub drivers. I think it will hit off
This thing is perfect for Uber. Say it is $600/mo. That's your operating cost. Anything you as an Uber driver make over that is your income (after taxes). Unlimited miles, insurance and warranty packages together is excellent.

Very interesting... I feel like jay is taking a tour and asking questions that I would. That being said I feel like I’m looking at the next failed vehicle concept idea.
@Pasu suel Advertising does not guarantee success, idiot.
I feel it will prosper $$$$
It's a completely uninteresting looking car, the target audience for this isn't gearheads, it's for people who view cars as a household appliance. It achieves that goal very well. Even the person presenting it here isn't particulary interested in it, they just view it as a service they need.
The subscription structure is also going to appeal to the eco-minded people. "Oh, I don't own a car" but they still get to have most of the advantages of owning a car.
It may not be this particular car but the concept for a subscription-based, boring A-to-B ride share has a very good chance of becoming a success, especially in larger cities.
Why assume that Jay requires quid pro quo to introduce the new concept company? Can it not be that Jay is just a nice guy, or maybe the concept of being nice is as novel for you as the car is. And keep in mind that it does generate an episode of content for him.
At least they're trying. Not sure it's a great business model (I like it but I'm curious how the states will license it and other niggling details) - but it's nice to see people doing, not just consuming. It's easy to nitpick (and sometimes deserved) people's efforts - but I'll always support people doing things. Even nutty things.
These look super cool! I really like the pickup body and that they just changed from subscription only. The pickup would be great for service vehicles for plumbers and stuff, and also delivery vehicles.

No idea what he meant by comparing the subscription model to that of a fridge. Must be an LA thing. Here in Oregon we buy our appliances and do/pay for all the maintenance.
Vehicle as a utilitarian item rather than a customized machine. Like a fridge. Or using a ride hailing service rather than owning a car.
There are subscription/rentals services for furniture and appliances in India. Lookup furlenco
I put stickers on mine... lol
I mean if you rent the appliances tend to belong to the landlord and the maintenance is not the tenant's responsibility.
Its so complicated of a system it wont work. Bring a car to you, pick it up. Drop it off. Wth. Aint nobody got time for that. Rent it or buy it. Simple. Blue company is going out of business in cities cause people want to own a car. For now. Maybe in the future it will work like digital only games. But it will be a while.

Love Jay’s references and analogies to old car companies and early technology.
I enjoy watching the guy constantly trying to distance himself from the VW bus references.
@@Abkpanda its unfortunate because this really seems like what a 2020s hippie van would be.
When he made that comment about the "jump seat," I couldn't exactly make out the young guys face, but it definitely either said, "I have no idea what you're talking about," or else, "oh my, you hadn't reached driving age by the 1930's, had you??"
@@Abkpanda okay, okay, it's like a 60's VW min-bus with a 600HP hemi shoehorned in, but with no tailpipe emissions.
Good catch!
@@MarcillaSmith flight attendants sit in jump seats during takeoff and landing, so there's that.
28:48 haha that guy was so happy when Jay Leno noticed the details
It looks like he smiled and laughed at Jay when Jay said, “there’s the inside there.” Ha! That’s funny.
Leno is very knowledgeable. I always enjoy listening to him talk about cars. Learn something Everytime.
There's never been a time where I couldn't agree more with Jay Leno.
Wow- I'm really impressed with Jay Leno's depth of knowledge and passion for engineering
hes no dummy hes a gear head rebuilds all his own cars .
This whole interview seemed awkward...
Jay is a really easy going man, I’ve meet him a few times at local car shows. It’s just the other guy 🤣
Engineers, awkward? Never!
I felt it 🤣🤣🤣
they don't know how to interact with others in a human way.
No one who designed a car like this has good social skills lol
This had to be the only tech description that I've laughed through. Good stuff!
I think it's a great idea, I'd totally own one of these.
Leno is really trying to sell this thing. He talked about the car more than the people at Canoo.
Yeah I think they need a 3rd partner more marketing focussed...
Being a good dude
i think hes just genuinely interested to see something new
Jay knows the incredible difficulty of designing a new vehicle and drivetrain from scratch; he is just paying the kind of complement they are due.
The guy in the blue suit jacket had absolutely no personality and had no desire to even smile.
Jay is trying really hard to make them look good.
Making comparessions with Lambos,Ferraris and Porsch´s ,doesnt look like he tryed that "hard"!!!
I suppose it means he really likes it.
This is the future in the end, and i am glad he is open to it.
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 exactly, I feel the same as Jay probably... I hate it. Its ugly af, the interior is weird for the sake of being weird, and their entire subscription service is flawed because either its cheap but the vehicles will get destroyed or its too expensive for anyone to care about.
But having said that, the times are changing. This is perfect for ride sharing and city driving, people don't necessarily care about looks or performance, and people will probably eat this up or something like this in the future...
@@Fetidaf as soon as autonomy is legalised and cars no longer need babysitters private ownership of cars is history.
The moment that happens ubers become pennies per mile.
1000 miles a month for 69,95. 24/7/365 service on demand.
Just like your phone subscription.
No more car paymemts, insurance, taxes, parking, dodgy dealerships and anoying sales people, rip off garages. Your garage becomes living space.
For most people that would put 500 or more back in their pocket every single month for the same experience as having your own car taxiing you around.
Most people would jump on that instantly. That is where we are heading sadly enough.
good luck with the motorcycle trooper in the background. im not trusting anything with a police escort
Finally... a factory car (home office) I can LIVE in!
"But dad, Jay Leno doesn't wear a seatbelt when he rides in the backseat." To which every dad in America will need to reply "son, don't make me have to stop this car!"
Is a chrome motorcycle cop following me around complimentary with my subscription?
Legal requirement for experimental unregistered vehicles.
No they won't need to be there physically in the production model 😁
That was the additional Terminator for extra safety
he is keeping an eye on the marijuana plant in the door if you are close to a border
Leno was born in 1950 yet he remembers when the 1934 Airflow came out ... looks like he has been playing around with the Delorean Time Machine again...
...or reading automotive history books.
I have some old photographs where Jay is laughing and high fiving with Henry Ford at the design table for the Model T
Haha...He loves the history so much, he remembers it as if he was there...
We'll never know
Jay makes this far more accessible to the average person through his interpretation of the engineer’s description. Though I’m a bit hesitant on the “subscription” model only. Like Jay says I like to own a thing and customize it to my wants and I worry about “can’t afford it this month then it’s not yours” but I can see the appeal for others.
I was not aware we were on the path to "subscribing" to own a car short term. They are moving us towards "socialism" where you will "own nothing and be happy."Good Luck with the new world order!
Now: We did not steal any ideas from "that car".
In Court: We had no idea our vehicle resembled a Volkswagen Bus, it has 23 windows? What a coincidence!
That close up of Leno's boot on the seat 😂
Chapelle show, Rick James boots on the couch vs Charlie Murphy!! 🙄😂
the cut to of the guys silent discomfort...priceless
Wow that's a pretty high tech toaster oven
I think my toaster has more personality than the rep......
That was great. Really appreciate and enjoyed the perspective of future investors improving the way we do thing's.
I don't know Jay, I'm not subscribed to my fridge, I don't rent it. I actually own my fridge. So I was pretty excited about this company, but after watching this and understanding what they're actually doing, I think I'll just go ahead and get my cars. I want to own my own vehicles, I don't want to rent and pay for months on months and in the end own nothing to show for all those payments. I guess it'd have to come down to how much a month or is. I don't want a car that watches me either. It's just weird. Also, this guy taking to Jay is the quite possibly the most unexcited person they could come across to try and prop up their product?
