  • Well, complete ineptitude.
The only thing I can take away from this is : If you want a good spread, have the right tool . . . !

Sorry for being right. The tool they use in the garages to tighten the C/V clips looks and works just like a 'tile chipper pliers', the teeth don't quite touch. I made one from an old nail pliers, grinding the teeth down to leave a gap.

It's fine, you were spot on. Can't believe I missed it. Yes, perhaps fencing pliers are not the best thing to use!

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have an Astra F 98 with X16XEL engine. The V ribbed belt is ripped off. I need to put in the new one. But I couldn't find out how to guide the belt. Do I need to take the motor mount off? Do you have some instructions for that?

Yes, apparently the right hand engine mounting has to come off. On DOHC models, the engine mounting bracket from the support has to come off too. On some models it may be necessary to remove the complete air cleaner assembly and enging cover! That's tedious! I've read this from the Bible according to Haynes. The ribbed v belt comes down from the power steering pump to the crankshaft, up to the tensioner then on to the alternator and back to the pump.

Does anyone on CZcams know if mk 3 astra 1.6 auto drive shafts are used in any other models? Vectra, Zafira etc? Cant seem to track one down for potential father in law's car. Forums don't seem to have much yield on such a specific question. He tried a Corsa drive shaft. :/ I'm tired of getting greasy, oily drive shafts in the boot of my car, which I like to keep prestine!!

Have to say, don't know. Possibly fit similar models from the same era. Cavalier etc.

As these videos and tutorials of yours are starting to take off I wonder if you might be thinking about updating your channel name to something more appropriate that will help people find your channel when they search CZcams - 'Driveway Mechanic' or whatever.

Thank you for the concern, but, in the end, it's just an old guy messing with cars. If it helps somebody, great! it all started because I could not find a good tutorial on Disco 2's alternator change. so I thought I'd do my own in the hope of helping somebody else. It's okay it it does not go anywhere, I'm supposed to be finishing my childrens books anyway!
