The officer shot himself because he was trying to resist the spell but couldn’t so he shot himself. If I was a police officer and realized what I was doing to the kid I would’ve done the same thing, honestly that was the most honourable death in the movie.
that's why it's so funny they made the cop all HoNoUrAbLe, like as if the witch would need much to get him to shoot a kid. Guess he was too white of a kid!
Sean I wouldn’t venture into the comedy field. It’s not suited for you. Even if some cops are cowards (they exist in every profession), nothing is dumber than calling a bunch of people cowards who have a hard ass job and would save your dumbass if you needed help. Mallory was a witch from the start. There where hints to this throughout film.
. she says she pretended to be a girl named Dakota in highschool until the "Wig" started to smell. We know The Wretched gives off a bad odor and can wear human skin.
. She was knowledgable about the cellar and babies
. no real reaction or fear of Ben's accusation of Abbie being a witch
. she covers up the fact there was ever a tree.
She's probably a rival witch to the other or would prefer hiding her identity over helping the other witch.
Maybe a witch made in the water hence the lake at the end
And maybe her host body doesn't degenerate as quickly as that of the other witch because that body is younger? It does make sense, especially since the other witch never really had the opportunity to 'possess' Mallory before she was splattered by being hit by the car and had her tree burned down. And of course the Mallory-Wretched can touch the salt because she never touches it with her own flesh, only that of the host. We also never see a line of salt actually bar the path of the witch character as some kind of ward (I think that comes from mythology associated with zombies and unquiet spirits instead of witches in any case), only burn her face when thrown into her eyes with no host body to get in the way. It might also explain why the Mallory-Wretched doesn't harm her 'sister' or other members of the family she is with - they are too useful as camouflage to waste. She is more wily than the other one, more careful. She doesn't tip her hand openly. She also has easy access to unsupervised children as someone who gives swimming and boating lessons, allowing her to pick her targets from among the children of families other than the one of the host she is using. And she keeps artificial flowers at her office because she knows real ones would wilt in her presence.
This, all these comments, this is my kinda convo 🤗
Maybe Ben was a wizard hiding in human skin?
It's far from flawless, but compared to some of the other horror movies of 2020 (The Turning, The Grudge, Fantasy Island, Brahms: The Boy II) it was a freaking masterpiece.

Man, quarantine has done a number in my notion of time
True
The turning was a bad attempt of a brilliant short story. The turn of the screw.
@@turma8eac shut the fuckk up. The grudge was great
Mallory was a witch from the get go, potentially a different kind. She oddly says to bens dad about the cigarette smoke “it cant kill me,” she pretends to not know “lily” her sister despite the timing of the other witch not lining up with the timing of her abduction which would result in memory loss, she didnt react at all to ben saying their neighbor is one of those creatures, the fake flowers, she gets the skittles “taste the rainbow” slogan tacked onto starburts like wtf? I immediately suspected her as sketch because of how immediately forgiving she was to ben and also because she has no friends?! Shes not seen talking to anyone else despite being invited to a party ? She may be a good witch seeing as she helped them destroy the other, but then she may be a young “dark mother” who knocked competition out and befriends easy victims to get to their families, or shes an entirely different evil witch
Definitely makes more sense than the other witch taking her over despite being blown up.
She's not affected by salt at the very least.
Ezreal some witches probably arent, however she was always IN the salt itself and a separate force always broke the salt before she left the circles
It also occured to me that her skin lasted a really long time if she is the same type of witch.
She didn't say it cant kill me, she said it wont kill me. Becuase she not the one smoking the cig. I'm not sure why you said the time line wasnt right for when she forgot Lilly. when Ben called her she was at the marina and so was Lilly who was playing right before the witch showed up at the bottom of the slide. Cool theory tho.
Mallory wasn't a witch at the beginning but when she took some of the salt and threw it at the witch it broke the circle which then gave the witch a chance to escape (that explains y we didn't see the witch actually being crushed when the dad drove the car into the tree). The witch then got into Mallory and now she's the witch. Also for those who don't understand how Ben forgot his brother from the start even though he didn't have contact with the witch yet, that's actually just a view of what his memory looked like before he realized the witch removed his memory of his little brother thats y it says "5 days ago" at the beginning. I personally didn't think making Mallory a witch was nessesary, the movie would've been perfect without that plot twist. Not all movies need many plot twists. Other than that this movie was good.
Wouldn’t Ben and his dad see Mallory getting possessed by the witch when the tree was burning? And wouldn’t they have made sure the original witch was actually killed by the car?
She's a witch she gave him a fake flower because a real one around her would decay quickly because that's what witches do to plants that's why been was confused
No shit Sherlock.
Well.. Sherlock.
Smart man unlike the rest of these comments
Yeah that’s the witch not Mallory cause she’s dead
Mallory was a witch from the beginning. Probably a young witch. She gave hints of it.
She said to Ben throughout the film:
- I can't do divulging my darkest secrets (when she and Ben were drinking)
- How many dead babies you think she's got down there? (about Ben's neighbour)
She felt sorry when the old witch was killed, remember how she looked back at the burning tree
I think the witch may have been her mother and I dont remeber ever seeing her mom in the film only mentioned when she runs out the door with no reply
U gave the explanation I was looking for...thanks
but if mallory is a witch, why wasn't she affected by the salt? and why would she help to kill the witch?
@@virustwinI thought about this too and wonder if she is another breed of witch or another type of monster I mean if slip skin hags are In the area I wonder if other monsters could be too

@@ZAXT0N how mal became a witch needs to be explained though
like either
A) she was a witch the whole time, in which case why didnt her body deteriorate like the neighbors? how long has she been working at the dock? we never see any unnatural movements from her ever until the end when the other witch can only be composed for only seconds at a time. was she stealing children at the docks for years at the same rate as the other witch? how are there no reports? surely people question family photos with rando kids in them?
b)she was taken over by the preestablished witch but off screen and after the car crash? when could that have happened? how?
c) it was a shit house twist for a twists sake in a cliche horror movie with zero thought put into it and only there for the lingering "oooo the witch is still out there kiddies isnt that spoopy?!?!"

I found the budget was great in regards to FX. It didn't rely on heavy CGI like most movies today. It reminded me of more 70's & 80's style horror w/ regular old fashioned prosthetics for the most part. My only problem was the poor character development of everyone in the story. It was hard to root for anyone, or even get behind the lead protagonist when he was difficult to sympathize with.

SPOILER-ISH but since this video is about the ending, I think this is OK to post...
I really liked the twist and didn't see it coming. In retrospect, IDK how I missed it. There were a few moments that I thought were weird but I figured they were just weird. I didn't catch on that they were clues. The main one was that the dinner table was set with four places. I remember thinking, "There are too many plates there." Or that he was playing Connect 4 with no one. I'm usually so quick to catch on to things like that.
Well done!
Kris what got me was when the mom called while Ben was at work. She said “I just miss my boys so much”. I remember thinking that’s a weird thing to say if the parents are getting a divorce
And when ben puts salt on the door but you dont see her going through it, she just teleports the the front of the house a pretty big clue if you ask me
yeah, movie was so well done. Like i didnt notice any of those details, but at the end it made so much sense
I caught the Connect 4 at the table. The Dad is sitting too far away, leaned back and drinking a beer. I just thought that it may have been from earlier before dinner.
my dad and my uncle (his brother) both executively produces this movie so if you have any questions I’ll be glad to answer!
From what I know the ending is supposed to be “up to you”, there’s no specific answer thag I was told. I personally found it confusing in a way, but do think that mal could possibly be a witch at the end. The whole theory where mal is a witch the entire movie is not true.
I’m glad you enjoyed the movie and I thought it was a super fun watch. Especially when you find out the twist and then see the clues again the second time you watch it. Thanks for the review!!
Can you please explain the timeline of when Ben forgot about his brother? If we look back at the scene when Ben was in a bus on his way to visiting his dad, he had already forgotten about his brother looking at his broken arm cast when the old lady told him how good of an artist he was. That doesn't make any sense? He was on the bus on his way to the town & yet to meet the witch at that point, so how could the witch have already cast a spell on him(making him forget his brother) when he hadn't even reach that town? 🤷 That part doesn't make any sense.
@@kurumi9714 Thank You, My Question As Well...If The Hag Needed To Whisper In The Ear Of Its Victims, Then When and How The Hell Did Ben Become Under Her "Forgotten Spell"??
@@kurumi9714 im gonna repost the reply i made to a comment asking the same question:
Story is being told retrospecively. We start Ben's story with what at first we thought it just one of his dreams, him being drowned, while technicly we were told a story up to that point. Since by then witch already got the picture of his family and put it up on its ritual pedastal(by doing this, scratching off their eyes on the picture, she makes all family members forget about a specific member), he had forgotten of his young brother, and since then, what we see, the story we thought was being told chronologically, is actually how the witch wanted Ben to remember his past

that's really cool!!
Your analysis is hilarious at some points. I'm going to subscribe and watch before I buy any movies going forward. I like.
Got to applaud them for the brother reveal, it showed us the process by which Dylan's father said he had no son, and by extension all the other movies where super natural memory manipulation occurs. In many where it's not explained we are left with simply accepting magical spell just makes it happen.
I really enjoyed the Wretched. Came across it by accident. But I was greatly impressed by the film.
Great explanation of the movie. Thank you!
Great upload, I really want to watch this movie now!
It's On CZcams My Friend...😊
One thing too, I at first kind of thought the twist was lame because I couldn't think of any indication that we were seeing the story through Ben's memory rather than real time/present day, in which case we should have seen the brother the whole time. But then I remembered, the movie never jumped forward to present day. It jumped from 35 years ago to 5 days ago, meaning everything up until the altar burned and released everyone's memories took place in Ben's memory, and after that was present day. This film ended up being a much smarter/deeper movie than I initially thought.
No.. it’s actually much dumber/shallower than you ever thought. The jump you bring up from 35 years ago to 5 days ago actually makes the possibility we’re seeing the story through Ben’s memory LESS possible. As the events we are shown are 5 days ago without ever visiting the present first, therefore how could these be memories? And if they were memories of 5 days ago, from the present, he had regained the memories and so his brother wouldn’t be missing from them any longer. And that is all ignoring the fact that even if you could somehow explain Ben having no memories of his brother the entire time it wouldn’t explain why the mechanics of his memory loss is entirely different than the way everyone else’s is in the movie. EVERYONE else who is forgotten by their family members has simultaneously been taken by the Wretch, and therefore their sudden absence isn’t noticed.. NOT the other way around where you somehow don’t notice a family members existence who is NOT absent, and has been living under the same roof the entire time. If anything, had Ben lost the memory of his brother he should have been like- Dad, who the fuck is this random kid living with us?! And the same thing with the photograph.. how is his brother magically just not even visible at first instead of Ben being like who the hell is that kid in the photo with us? And lastly, the way he regains the memory of his brother and the flashback fill in scenes where he actually WAS living amongst him the entire time is triggered by… what?! There was nothing significant whatsoever about the moment he regains his memory to explain why he just did so, other than it was the timing they chose most convenient to reveal their non-sensical incoherent “twist”. Ben and his Dad get in vehicle to flee, and Ben decides to start spacing out watching the flames from the house fire, and for some reason randomly just recovers all of the “memories”. This “twist” did literally nothing to expand the plot or add to it in anyway, and instead only introduced massive plot holes that otherwise wouldn’t be there.
@@LiveFreeOrDie2A it was the photos, as they burned the memories came back to everyone hexed. Not that it really covers for the massive plot inconsistencies and plot holes. But it definitely was the photos that she used to keep their memories hidden.
I really liked this. The creature f/x were awesome, the soundtrack was great, and it was shot beautifully. It had so many callbacks to 80's iconic movies.
And it only had 66k budget
The movie takes a huge jump here at the end.endings like this are okay as long as there is a good possibility .the twisted ending to me was not nicely executed.I think they just added in the thought of her being a witch , just to make the ending more exciting. but the plastic flower was a nice touch.
This felt like a supernatural version of that movie with Shia Labeouf called “Disturbia”. Troublemaker stuck somewhere he doesn’t want be, sees weird and suspicious doings next door, and nobody of authority believes him when he tells them what he’s witnessed. That’s my take anyway.
that’s the plot of like 70% of horror movies though tbh
That's what I was thinking the whole movie!
I NEVER watch horror movies and you are the only person on CZcams that I doesnt scare me when explaining horror movies endings! THANK YOUUUU
very good review!
I went into this movie completely blind and knew nothing about it at all. I ended up liking it, and that’s pretty surprising because in my opinion, horror movies have been so blah the last like... 20 years lol.
I will say it took a while for it to pick up and I was bored throughout the first 20-25 mins lol. But that main twist was awesome and I didn’t see it coming at all. Which is crazy because looking back, it was hinted at so many times. Also, psychological thrillers / horror films are my favorite genres and because of that, I can usually guess the twist and/or the ending within the first 15 minutes.
There were other little twists I guessed off the rip, and I definitely called the ending, because it’s been done in almost every single “possession” film ever made lol.
But yeah the movie wasn’t AMAZING or anything. But I thought it was good and enjoyable 🤷🏼♂️

@@sidneyporter8298 Can they make another movie along these lines?
Then you missed a few good horror movies in the last 20 years, they're out there, you just gotta know where to look :D
edchan technically he wasn’t invisible. He was there the whole time, but the witch made it so everyone forgot all about him.. its like the main power the witch has, and it’s so strong that it not only makes you forget the child, but she wipes them completely from your mind to the point it’s like they never even existed.. which is why they couldn’t see him
The concept, specially the monster, has great potential
I enjoyed the brother twist
The execution however stumbles a lot
There was a lot left out that would explain each scene, it was like watching Swiss-cheese almost every scene had some connector missing. the flow of the scene was off, but the acting was great , and the special effect were great, the gross factor with the Deer was off the charts with the gutting of the deer, I have seen Pigs gutted, but that deer, the scene was so disgusting that you could almost smell how bad the deer smelled.
Also the brother twist is very interesting
Subscribed because of this video
Much better than anticipated...really enjoyed it.
I still don’t know he forgot his brother on the bus and how the chick got possessed
When??????
Idk about the chick but they all forgot when the creature put the photo of the kid up on that ritual thing. When it burned then Mallory and the guy remembered their siblings
Thats the cool detail. We would assume the story was being told chronologically, but witches spell took effect as if it was retrospectively told. Technicly we do start from the point of Ben being drowned and then we get to the story how he came to that point. Its a small detail that explains it
stupid stuff
When the movie starting they said 5 days ago which means the story that explains all by Ben is past where he forgot about his brother
ben’s story starts with “five days ago” title, so i think the end of the summer when he is going home is present day and the entirety of the movie was a memory, which is why he can’t remember his brother, the witch made him forget his brother even existed
Ok so what bugged me the most is that Dillon and Nathan look totally identical, so I thought Nathan was Dillon and it made zero sense, I had to look it up to realize they were two different boys.
The comment by Mallory when she signs Ben's cast makes more sense after you find out he's got a little brother.
Okay, I get all this (Great video by the way) but how the hell did they explain all the dead people left behind afterwards with nobody to blame for their deaths? Maybe I'm just missing something but I can't find it, lol.
For real i was hoping for them to have some sort of alibi
I think once the hag has possessed someone, reality warps around them and theyre forgotten. Sarah (the gf) wasn't gone yet bc the hag hadn't finished using her skin. But afterwards the only people who know are Ben, Mallory, His dad and his brother.

I don’t know I feel like the ending wasn’t very deserving it’s feels like instead of an actual ending we all want it just make a continuous loop of what we didn’t expect. There's a problem with mal being a witch, assuming she isn't the same one(they most likely killed the boo hag with the circle of salt sealing her and the car crashing with the fire). If mal is a witch would that make her sister lily one too or is mal adopted? The other part is if she's a young witch she shouldnt be affected by the spell that makes her forget either unless she lied. The big problem here is if mal is a witch why is she into ben like damn that wouldnt work out between them.
i think she just, either got corupted by the hag they "killed", or she is the hag, disguised as mal
Or Mal never existed and she manipulated her self in by messing with people memories
Lily kinda looks mixed 9:07 so adopted is probable
Mal broke the salt circle before they could burn the witch, we also don’t see the tree being burned, only the car so it’s likely the hag crawled into mal and erased that from everyone’s memory. Hence why we don’t see the crash or anything after that from anyone’s memory
Solid movie. That ending crazy, need a sequel.
I love the twists. They were a lot of fun. Despite it's flaws, this was a wonderfully creepy movie.
Just saw the film and I'm curious about the fake flower Mallory gives to Ben at the end: if Mallory is seen next to the bouquet of flowers, and is reading a get well card meant for the dad, doesn't that mean she didn't give the flowers to him? Why then would the flowers be fake?
If those slip skins live of the forgotten, why Mellory said... "and dont forget me" that doesnt make any sense....
Dad killed the witch by crash ..after that when Ben says goodbye to mal suddenly the climax was changed with meaningless what actually at the end of scene try to say , was that mal was witch from beginning to ending ... totally confused
There was more than one witch, but only one witch was acting in a way that got noticed.
This actually seems like a good movie
Mallory could of been the Skin Hag’s sister/daughter in a skin herself or like the Sith, one Master one Apprentice and Mallory was the apprentice witch
when you realize the hag first came onto their property by surviving a car crash..
WHICH MEANS SHE COULD SURVIVE THE CAR CRASHING INTO THE TREE

I thought that Mallory was under the witch's spell for a while. When Ben called her and warned her about her sister she said she didn't have a sister...or something.

*one big thing I noticed is that how was it possible that Ben's father never not once mentioned Nathan's name?..... It's clear the witch wasn't controlling Ben's father at any point in time so how did he not ever mention a word about one son to another (Nathan to Ben)?.... Just as Ben asked the neighbour about his son and he had no idea who or what Ben was talking about and Ben had to remind him about his son ....so if Nathan was always around but Ben couldn't remember him, was Nathan just at home by himself alone many times? And also, the same way how Mal's sister clearly remembered her at the park before being taken, did Nathan never ask his dad what's up with Ben or why he wasn't paying any attention to him? Because in the flashbacks, they clearly showed the father still knowing both his sons..which brings me back to how did he never talk about Nathan to Ben.*
Ben wasnt controller but he still couldnt remember nathan. So i guess the same with the father
Witch took their picture and placed it on her sticks ritual thing therefor causing the effect of them forgeting. We are actually seeing through out the movie the way witch wanted Ben to see his past until his father burned down the ritual place and picture, causing spell to break and Ben to remember
I thought maybe the dog was a protector of sorts and was somehow there to protect against the hag force. Hence why he ran to the rescue of Ben? Idk just speculation I guess
There is an old caribbean folklore of a being called a Soucouyant or Ole Heg which is similiar to this. In our stories she is capable of shedding her skin and her true form is glowing light. What she does though is similiar to a vampire. You can stop her by finding her skin and sprinkling salt on it which will prevent her from putting it back on.
True and its old Higue
The dad explored the cellar after chastising Ben because Ben kept saying "look in the cellar" and "that's not Sarah", followed by Sarah acting weird as fuck. And about the cop...remember Ben's dad witnessed Dillon's father hang himself. Perhaps the hag for some reason can't keep her "zombies" forever and when she is done with them and releases her hold, they kill themselves. And maybe the cop chose drowning for the first murder attempt to avoid attracting attention, and when he goes to shoot Ben instead, her hold releases at that moment for whatever reason and now it's time to kill himself. It may be far-fetched, but to me the suicides in the film were significant. What I found more unbelievable about the drowning scene, was if Ben already lost consciousness he would have inhaled water and already been drowning by the time the dog showed up. Little things like that irritate me...
Blair Witch:"Hello? Can I buy some sticks?
YES! ALL OF THEM!"
I enjoyed the movie, it's pretty similar to Fright Night except with a witch and not as good.
Two things I don't get are 1) what was the purpose of the 35 years ago opening scene, and 2) when did the witch make him forget his brother? I don't think there is a time for her to have done that that would make sense.
Maybe Mal or his dad gf started the trance before Ben got there
@@Elrocksta24 I think his Dad's gf got possessed the night we saw her leaving the Dad's shop and the witch was outside. Mal i'm not sure about, but I don't believe she was a witch the whole time.
alififali yeah you are right because she was lactose intolerant in the beginning and than in that scene she was adding milk. I don’t know when Mal got possessed. Because she was adding salt and salt was a weakness. But technically we didn’t see the tree burn. Ben didn’t say if he saw it burn down. Maybe it goes further than we know.
@@Elrocksta24 yeah I think Mal likely changed after the tree scene. I get the feeling that the whole forgotten brother thing was just something the writers thought was a cool idea but didn't give it any thought
So glad to know the dog survived!!
We all know that symbol is for the Skaven, you can't tell me otherwise
I guess it'll be tough for Ben to get away from a cop who's possessed...... Actually it'll be super easy, barley an inconvenience!
flawed but worthwhile movie, i enjoyed it especially the twists and turns.....
Meh, film was OK - not bad for a debut. Thanks for explaining the flower was a fake - I didn't get that. I thought the cop shot himself because the dog broke the hags spell just long enough for him to reconsider shooting a teenager and he turned the gun as a last ditch effort.
@HAZZARD I'm not sure exactly - perhaps there is some connection to the girl who gets locked with the witch at the start? Is that his mum? Also, he wakes from the flashback of being drowned 5 days before it happens - what is up with that?
I’m thinking Mal or the dads gf started the process before his arrival.
@HAZZARD The movie begins (after the short 35 years ago story) with a shot of Ben getting drowned (we learn later that it's when he's getting drowned by the cop). So everything shown after that until that point in the story is a flashback that we can suppose is how Ben remembers things. This is why we don't see the brother. Ben has already been in contact with the hag and we are just experiencing what he now remembers of the events.
@HAZZARD He forgot later on in the movie but when she made him forget he lost all memory of the brother even the trip there.
@SilladX The story starts right around the drowning. Everything leading up to the moment where the picture of his family is burned and the forgetting ritual was undone was a flashback. You just didn't know it at the time.
Edit: @Le Chaos Rampant - Ah. I guess I should get into the habit of finishing the whole comment thread before adding in a reply.
The movie has an open ending. The witch might be hiding underneath skin of Mallory or it was real Mallory who wore plastic flower which she later gave to Ben.
The mid-80's were THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO??? ...Jeesus Christ! - it felt like just a few months have passed ...a YEAR TOPS!!
Thanks for explaining. Didn’t have the balls to watch it myself😂😭
Watch it bro
Huh. That sounds like an interesting movie.
Yeah l feel like l should've watched it but it's too late now
You can still watch it :)
@@bekleedeeHmm.. I just might !
It's On CZcams😊
Solid film! Especially in todays market.
The flower can be just coincidence. Someone else sent fake flowers to his dad
I love “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” it’s such a good movie 💖💕🥰
What are the chances of getting lost in a forest and encounter a cannibalistic witch these days? Just curious
My theory is there was two and it makes a lot of sense too but i dont feel like explaining hahahaha xD
This movie had tons of potential, entertaining story and maybe one or two cheap jump scares. But i believe the casting choice was really misplaced. The main character does not add any conection or interest with te viewer but what kept me going was the development of the story.
"we just killed off families and babies but killing a dog is way too far" this made me LAUGH SO HARD BECAUSE IT WOULD BE ME WRITING A HORROR MOVIE
