Thank you for that test! In my opinion the Z6III doesn’t shine in 1 particular thing, but it’s does really good in everything, which is why actually a good camera. It’s a 6k camera, with great video capabilities, raw, autofocus, IBIS and more! There are cameras in that price range that can beat the Nikon in some of these categories, but non doing them all good :)

Yep, I am a bit disappointed we went backward in some ways. I have a Z9 and on the CineD latitude test, which I consider the true real-life DR test, it scored very well. I was hoping at least equal DR, the Z9 beats the Canon 5RC and a little bit the Blackmagic camera. I wanted to have a 6k camera, rather than a 8k one, as the raw is ginormous. I hope they do a lattitude test their soon, one thing I find strange here is that the 10 bit log here, equals the RAW one, as their has always been about 2 stop difference between the two as the Nikon log is very contrasty.

@@Abdi_Mohamed_ ever since switching to Sony a7s3 4 years agao i obsessed so much over DR…then i realized, that the 3 Stops in the shadows of Sony SLOG3 are so void of colour and Quality, i usually crushed them to black in the grade…
Honestly, now i value internal RAW and bit depth a lot more, Such high DR doesnt usually result in a good image really (as it usually only serves to salvage a bad exposure to begin with), and filming & grading with more of a intentional contrast is more beneficial.
Also, im mostly a wedding filmmaker, so mixed light scenarios are usually a much bigger challenge, as it creates terrible skintones, esp. in Sony, these scenarios tend to come out a LOT better in raw, also Party-Lights at night are so much better…. So i LOVE superhigh DR, as its stress-free, but Raw, even with less DR, is even better imo. Nikons HL-Rolloff and Colour in NLOG, esp. with S-Series Glass is an absolute stunner, so im quite happy..

@@danielvilliers612 i will say this test seems outrageously bad and i have a feeling the raw processing might be at fault for part of it…in Gerald Undones test (usually comparable to cine-D) the z63 6k on 4k timeline with some NR came out to the same DR as A7s3 (12.9 Stops), that mirrors my shoot last sunday in the park with harsh sun, that felt identical to the a7s3 ive shot for 4 years…. (Easily handled Blazing sun IN frame with proper skintones in the shadows with excellent rolloffs)
Here the test looks like 9-10stops max, so not sure about the raw conversion here, sonething might be off…

@@m0nztam0nk Might be Nikon log raw workflow which is very bad. I don't know why Nikon doesn't change this. As in Gerald test, just changing the log from Nikon to panasonic it gained half a stop in the imatest test. My problem in this test is that the Raw is about the same as the 10 bit Log, which itself is known to be very contrasty compared to other log.

@@danielvilliers612I feel that his test was not done correctly. It is impossible for the latitude between 10bit and 12bit n-raw to be very similar. I have the z8, which in my opinion is above the r5c and the bmcc 6k in terms of DR in raw, and seeing Gerald Undon's results on the z6iii, I think that the nraw of the z6iii should be similar to the z8 . I did some tests with the files that Nikon lets us download and it confirms that it is quite similar to the z8. I have the z8 and a lumix s5iix, I'm thinking of selling my s5iix for the z6iii.

For example, clients love the look of bright interiors with clear windows when shooting real estate interiors, which shows what they can see with their eyes, which we can get in bracketed photos. However, achieving this in the video is almost impossible without balancing the lighting due to dynamic range limitations. This can cause bloom, where bright areas of an image bleed into the surrounding darker areas, impacting the dynamic range. I observed a similar effect in your ZF test as well. This can also affect sharpness. Can you please share what lenses and f-stop you used for these tests.

@Josh Sattin Thank you for posting this video. I am a Nikon shooter, but to me, the Blackmagic Camera seems to be the best for video. It's a shame that the Canon R5C has banding problems, as it would otherwise be a good hybrid camera that I could see myself using. I shoot mostly stills with very little video, but I also want to buy something with good video quality. I think I'll opt for the Nikon Z8 rather than the Z6 III. Although the Z8 may not be the best for video, according to your videos, it's definitely good enough for CZcams.
I also considered the Sony A7RV, but its ergonomics don't work for me-it's just too small for my hands.

Just for future reference, the highest quality recording mode on BMD cameras is Q0 not 3:1. Q0's compression ratio can be as low as 2:1 or as high as about 4:1 so it will hover around 3:1 for average detail frame. For higher detail images (like noisy images) it will bump the bitrate up above that.

The banding on the canon is a major issue imo when trying to preserve dynamic range and protect highlights. I haven’t run Into the green noise really testing my z63, and I’ve found the noise present when protecting highlights pretty easy to suck out. Seems fairly on par with the z8 to me?
For what it’s worth, in the cine D tests, the r5 and r5c both performed really poorly on dynamic range, when in craw, but then faired much better when in their non raw codecs. Something similar I think is happening on these Nikon cams, where nraw just is a bit shadow weighted, and noise reduction is needed to fully extract the most info out of the cam if shooting raw.
Def curious about your green casts tho, as imo the z63 noise performs better than the z8 on the noise reduction side.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Před 12 dny

Yeah the banding on the R5C is not good. There have been a lot of firmware updates on the R5C over the past two years and one of them made some changes to the highlight performance and dynamic range in Clog3. I assume the CineD tests were done a while ago. I can't really comment too much about the Z6III vs Z8 since I don't have the Z8. I did test out the Z8's dynamic range in this video though: czcams.com/video/GUshakaos3c/video.html

I like your approach enough detail to get the gist of it. Nikon under low light has more noise and a green tint, and it generally has less dynamic range. That being said in the real world you can get beautiful results when not pushed to extremes as you demonstrated when you filmed sunset with the loaner.
It was interesting that there wasn't DR difference between Nikon formats, I'd probably opt for the compressed format since I didn't see that much of a difference to justify using raw. While BM is the clear winner with superior IQ & DR you pay for it with lack of stabilization, auto focus, battery life, ergonomics, large files sizes, and DaVinci Resolve workflow. So it's personal decision whether ease of use or IQ is the priority.

In short, no improvement in the actual photos. So I am holding off for now. I don't want to get invested in the new Z63 only to find out that it is not an improvement - and some tests say it is not as capable of dynamic range and high ISO noise - as the camera I have now. Thanks again for your video.

There is no outright image quality improvement, for stills it’s mostly about the faster readout speed delivering much better autofocus and usability improvements, low rolling shutter making electronic shutter quite usable in more situations, 20FPS RAW, a great viewfinder, plus the new VR (focus point), pre capture and high res multishot etc. These might not be for you, and that’s fine- but lots of people are going to be very happy with these improvements for stills.

Dynamic range is great. But since I try to work on HDR videos I found that dynamic range is not most important part.
Revolution for me was to use HDR monitors (at least 1000nits, not just one with HDR logo on the box). if before dynamic range was just a hidden data helping recovering highlights in photoshop. Now once I see all the range it looks amazing. But I am not able to deliver it to viewing displays. For now 10bit photo formats are not widely adopted, even mobile phones able to display them, not fb/ig. You shoot HDR (photo or video) and then upload in SDR for online media. Maybe only exception is CZcams, there you can use HDR(sadly not in shorts).
After all no dynamic range replaces good light setup of the scene. It may save some highlights shooting in field. Something good to have, and forbid mistakes during filming.
Viewing technology still way behind recording.

Most of the things I have seen about working with N-raw, suggests using Davinci intermediate as the timeline color space in the project settings, then using two CSTs to go from r2020 and N-log, to Davinci Intermediate, and then on the second cst, intermediate to R709 and gamma 2.4 or r709A if you are Mac specific. Alternatively, you could keep your project settings normal, and use one CST to go from r2020, N-log, into a different color space like Arri or Red, and then use a conversion lut to that log footage...basically just making sure the N-raw data itself doesn't get bottlenecked by the r709. I still have to convert 2020 to 709 before delivering. No matter how I grade things and explain what I do, people will say their way or this other guy's way is better. @@Josh_Sattin I understand all that and the concept of cst. I’m just saying keeping it in nlog gamma and only converting the color space before you do your grading (I think that’s what you said you do? Maybe I read that wrong?) is counterintuitive because n-raw is designed for 2020. The workflow I referenced is actually the official process Nikon released and recommends to work with N-raw. Obviously you can do it however you want, but I’m just saying it may be affecting the results you are getting, but it also may not. 🤷🏻‍♂️Trying to make sense of why you got such a green cast when underexposed, as I haven't been seeing that on my z63.
I get very different results when I just use a straight conversion from 2020/n-log to R709/r709-A and make adjustments prior to the conversion, then when I keep the gamma in n-log and manually grade it. Highlights are way more clipped in the latter. Same reason if you try and change it to r709 settings in the raw panel you lose a bunch of highlight info...I think there's an inherent problem with trying to deliver r709 log from a 2020 color space and log curve without losing some info...that's why you see very different results converting to a color space like Arri or Canon, where the log is designed for 709.
This is also why often with heavy saturated colors, you often get this blue channel clipping with the Nikon some have discussed. Default settings of a resolve project are set to r709, so it's trying to force that N-raw to r709, without the proper gamma conversion. As soon as you CST it to a different color space, the clipping typically goes away.

Nikon Z8 beats the Canon R5C in dynamic range and it blows away the Nikon 6iii (from your own tests) which really surprised me since they really put a lot of love into the video aspect of the Nikon z6iii plus its new but this is a $2500 camera.

I don't really think this is the case after using Z8 and Z63 side by side for the past week. They are pretty similar, and the charts posted show them very similar as well. There may be some differences, but I don't think blows away is the right term to describe their differences. I don't really have a dog in that argument as I own them both, but I'm just saying ive found them fairly similar

fwiw I just stacked my z8 and z63 on top of each other facing a window. I had all the settings the same. Both at 40mm. Both cams the overall brightness of the image looks very similar. On both, I have zebras set to 100 percent. Both cams the zebras disappeared at F11. I need to make a video I guess. People would probably be interested to see that in action. I personally think the Z8 is ever so slightly better, but its just not that different imo

The photography side of the Z6III is much the same. If you push shadows you will get UGLY noise fairly quickly. Mine is going back today because of it. Lots of great features, but dynamic range is NOT one of them. I took several of the same shots in testing with a Canon R8 - a far 'less capable' camera. The dynamic range comparison wasn't close. And, the higher iso shots were much the same with the R8's noise being far more pleasing and less noticeable than the Z6III. Really disappointing.

I luckily waited until Photons to Photos released their Z6iii dynamic range test.... 10.44 stops for photos. Laughable by todays standards. DR was the compromise to hit this price point.
