Vince Staples' announcement of the details surrounding Dark Times felt sudden, which is why it is that much more of a pleasant surprise that this feels like one of his best records to date. Not only does Dark Times feature Staples at his best as a songwriter as well as some of his tightest flows to date, it also manages to do away with a couple of minor issues that collectively weighed down his last couple of records. Dark Times may not be especially accessible to those who don't especially care for lyric-focused music, and it goes without saying that the record's title is correct in its implication that this is some of Staples' most melancholic material to date. With all of that being said, Dark Times serves as a reminder of how great Vince Staples truly can be in his best moments.
