No it shouldn’t. In 2018 congress quietly changed the criteria to make it harder to qualify when they included Vietnam vets who should’ve been included to begin with so basically what they did was rob some vets to pay others, (caregivers), but it will be changed in October. My husband is at 100% disabled and I was on level 2 and under the 2018 criteria I no longer qualify. He served 20 years now retired. I’m hopeful the new VA President and this administration will put us back where we were-it sounds like it’s what they’re going to do. Hang in there

I'm a 100 percent disabled combat veteran retiree. I've been on the caregiver program for going on the past ten years. I've seen my caregiver reduced in hours and pay even as the VA upped my disability. Recently we have found out that we are being discharged from the caregiver program. Evidently traumatic brain injury was not sufficient. Hearing this gives me some hope. Perhaps the VA has realized that they need to reevaluate this program. Thank you all for your part in bringing this issue up.

As a fellow disabled Veteran, I am sad to hear of your experience. The VA needs to be dismantled and benefit administration put in the hands of entities that truly care and have integrity and are worthy of Veteran’s trust. That does not describe the VA. I was excited to hear from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation of the VAs about face on removing folks from the caregivers program. You deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. Thanks for your service to our country. Michael USAF, retired.

I believe you will be put back where you were in the program as my daughter just heard today that she was. My husband is also 100% disabled retired army vet and we’re currently being accessed to get back into the program and since hearing from my daughter I feel more positive about it so hang in there and pay no attention to the trolls making negative comments about the halt to change the criteria back to where it should be. I know it’s not easy. I hope the best for you.

As a veteran my wife had to go back to work because of this. Even now she worry’s more because even if she quits her job she stays on the lowest pier. I still haven’t gotten my tub chair to be able to safely get in and out of the tub due to breaking my back in three different areas in my spine when in service. As the va didn’t believe me and did medical malpractice on me as I was told nothing can be done. It’s bad seeing people go up on piers as others get discharged just due to facts that the outside therapist and psychiatrist can’t just send veterans documents to the caregiver support program without them filing out proper paperwork. Why was about to get discharged.

@@smithhomestead1589 They need some good people and the tools (IT) to keep thier Caregiver records up to date. I think they are really struggling to try to make that happen. That, and i would like to see a doctor who votes with this board that has actually met, evaluated, and treated you as the veteran. I think those things would actually help us as veterans...and probably save a ton of cash for the VA as well.

As a 100% disabled veteran due to multiple disabilities including an above-the-knee amputation. We have been denied caregiver status for my wife. We understand that up to 90% of applicants are being denied caregiver status. What can be done to correct this situation?

    • @tammyjohnson8924
      @tammyjohnson8924 Před 2 lety +2

The criteria will be changed back to its original form in October. I know how you feel as I am a legacy caregiver and my army retired 20 years served is 100% disabled and seems under the new criteria that congress in 2018 quietly altered to not include any mental disabilities at all-I am now denied eligibility but on the bright side thanks to other disqualified legacy caregivers like myself going before a new congress they are changing the criteria back to include mental disabilities. And my husband was only at 90% when I became a second tier caregiver so reapply in October and you should be fine. The 2018 congress changed the criteria in 2018 when they included Vietnam vets who should’ve been included to begin with but to pay additional caregivers they decided to take from existing caregivers and make it harder to qualify. They did this quietly and it was plain wrong but it’s going to get straight in October my caregiver nurse coordinator told me and I was certified in 2012 so it hurt to all of a sudden be dropped from the program. I’m confident we will get it back to where it should’ve stayed. They basically robbed caregivers of vets to pay caregivers of vets instead of finding the money to benefit all vets which is deserved as it’s difficult to manage mental illness and I’m sure they put brain injury into the same category. Just hang in there like we are doing.

My sister and brother in law, a Vietnam vet, was on it only a month or two before he died so yes they waited so long before they were allowed to apply and that’s not right. My sister struggled every day as my brother in law suffered brain deterioration from agent orange and she knew nothing about a caregiver program until I told her and still they had to wait, they’re also in their 70’s as are most Vietnam Vets who should’ve been informed at the beginning.

I was a care giver since 2012-my husband who’s bipolar was put on Prozac and an even higher dose-This didn’t happen overnight-I got up one morning and he had left taking barely anything after 25 yrs of marriage-I lost my stipend soon after and once my husband was taken off Prozac and they found the right meds he became severely depressed over what he’d done and lost-his wife-children-grandsons-our home and everything in it. I knew it wasn’t him behind those eyes barely sleeping two hours a night before he left so long to short we reconciled but when I applied to get my caregiver status back it was denied. The VA psyche prescriber really screwed up the entire family-I’m appealing but I’d still be a caregiver with a stipend had my husband not taken off! He was in the most severe manic state I’d ever seen. I called the crises nurse I called his psychologist who called the police and they all knew where he was but no one would tell me. It was so harsh so punishing because I knew once he got off Prozac he’d want to come home. Apparently I had no power as a wife or caregiver-I had no right to know where he was according to the VA caregivers program. I made a huge mistake by calling any of them.

She had to start working a job because we couldn’t afford firewood or bills because she is the lowest paid. I seen other veterans spouses that get the highest amount because they are scared of their loved ones going to be part of the 22 a day. Am 100% ptsd and 100% IU. Had social worker give me a call the other day. She only had the amount of hours I get a week right and the company name that sends out the caregiver. They keep cutting this program back and I guarantee that if we don't get on our congress person to act on our behalf then the program will not be around much longer and I'm sure that there are many veterans that don't know what this program is and if they qualify for it. It took over 3 times to the ER before the va was like there's something wrong with him and the doctors didn't say directly but after doing my own research I have alzheimers although they didn't want to say it or directly put down in my records but they put down their findings which is the same thing! So the social worker got everything else wrong and I have lost most of my ability to speak clearly and with a straight sentence so they constantly try to cut me off, you can't let them walk all over you, keep speaking on your pace and stay on your topic until you have answered their questions before they try to move to the next one. It may take you an hour or more on the phone but you need to get your voice heard!
So my thing is and what I told her if I don't get the help I've been getting then I'm back to square one going back to the ER just to get back on the program that the government seems to want to take away and the VA will never say anything about more benefits we're entitled to until something drastic happens and then they'll have to pay more!

Then we were told we were being removed because she had a part-time job, The program was being cut back, so they had to figure who could stay and who had to go. We tried to get back on the program again denied, even though my wife how to take care of me full-time. So one days she has to go to work if my daughter cannot help, I sit in the car at her job in case there’s an emergency being that I have seizures that will end me up in the hospital at times in comas. I can’t wait to be a va caregiver. Been taking care of my dad since Sep 23 2021. Applied for the program but was denied because my dad has to be at least at %70 disability. He recently had a secondary injury, fell and hit his neck on the door (He had spine surgery in July 2021 because of it). My dad is currently in process to get a temporary %100 disability for at least a year amongst some other claims. We went to a c&p exam in April of 2022 concerning the secondary injury, praying all goes well. Once he gets temporary %100, I will then be eligible to join the va caregiver program. I can then be back payed to November 2021, date of the original va caregiver application as a caregiver so I’m looking forward to it. Pray for us y’all.

This is 100% REAL! I personally know-my daughter was just added back into the program much to her relief and it happened within a couple weeks of being told she didn’t meet the criteria and she’s back in already so any negative comments or politicizing of this pause is totally wrong and unfounded and I’m speaking as the wife of a 20 army retired war veteran who got into the caregiver program in 2012. No one has reason or basis to judge this halt to change the criteria to be more realistic and fair at this point so for the people who are personally effected by this please ignore those who probably know nothing about the program to begin with and don’t understand the real people this effects. This is a good thing they’re doing and it’s not political. Not everything is.

I would ask a nurse coordinator. I wouldn’t take comments from people on here that are only expressing opinions. Call someone who can give you the right answer. I’m in the same boat as you and waiting to see. Our coordinator is going to call us soon.

They do it every 3 months anyway. A complete waste of time and money. 100% permanent should be clinical review once a year. I got denied because it takes 3 months for an appointment. Clinical fail on the part of the Va.

We just received a call from the VA relating to us that we are being placed on a list of revaluation due to being kicked off the list. They said do not do the appeal and to wait so hopefully everyone else will be receiving this call as well!

Can anyone confirm when disabled vets from all periods will become eligible to apply for the caregiver program?

Now but it’s best to wait until October when the criteria will go back closer it’s original form before they made it harder in 2018 to qualify.

If you’re taking care of a disabled veteran you it shouldn’t matter what country you’re in. You should reapply.

This has nothing to do with votes. This is a do over of a major “wrong” done to caregivers of vets that needs to be righted. But of course there’s always somebody to make it into whatever suits them. You can leave the political rhetoric out of this one.

@@tammyjohnson8924 so you really believe this “pause” or assessment of the reassessment, while they continue to kick people off and mention nothing about what just talked about in this video, you really believe the people in charge have their hearts in the right place and the wrongs will be rectified? Asking seriously, not sarcastically. thanks
