- I've been having a lot of fun with these projects lately. I was in the middle of turning this and another project when I ran into a minor roadblock. Multiple factors forced me to stop for a few days and think about how I wanted these projects to turn out. Truth be told, I wanted to see (for both projects) how far I could get with large cracks in the wood. Not very far. I ended up going the epoxy resin route (Am I a real woodturning CZcamsr now?). The resin stabilized the wood and allowed for smooth turning from there. In the end, it turned out pretty decent!
For Woodworkers:
This was turned from the same spalted maple as my previous few maple projects. This happened to be a significantly less figured portion (which I was hoping for). I don't have a pressure pot but instead, a vacuum pot. It works well but it takes a few cycles of vacuuming the chamber, then re-pressurizing, rinse and repeat. I've found it woks quite once you get the feel of it. I wrapped it in a thin corrugated plastic, held it in place with hot glue, and sealed with quick set epoxy.
The coffee mug insert was a gift to me, purchased from Rockler. These types of inserts can be found all over with a quick google search. Once completed, the project was sanded from 80 grit to 320 grit, then finished with 4 coats of clear gloss polyurethane.
Video:
This project was shot on a Canon Powershot S110. All photos were taken on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Photos and thumbnail were edited in Photoshop and the video project was edited and completed in Hitfilm.

Nice mug!! Lovely details!
As always, project details are in the video description. Do you drink coffee or tea? If so, what's your favorite flavor?
I think i need one of those! I love the subtle bit of color from the epoxy. Do you have any purple? Very cool!
I have a lot of purple! 😉
